CAMP Mr. Edwin Eugene (Gene) Camp, 85, of 235 Longview Circle in Roaring Gap, NC, formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away Thursday morning, September 27, 2001, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. Before retirement, he was employed over 20 years at Horne-Wilson in Charlotte, NC. He served in World War II and was a charter member of Carolina Golf and Country Club in Charlotte. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Lynn) Camp of the home; one step-daughter and spouse, Carol and Jeff Amsbaugh of Plano, TX; three step-sons and spouses, Stuart Davis of Memphis, TN, Phillip and Paula Davis of Anchorage, AK and William and Shelia Davis of Boca Raton, FL; one sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Harold Spake of Shelby, NC; and special friends, David and Kristen James and Bill and Bobbie Ross. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Calvin and Bobbie Harton Camp, and one sister, Madge Bridgers. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, September 30, 2001 at 2 PM at the High Meadows Country Club in Roaring Gap, NC by Dr. James Frazier. The family will receive friends immediately following the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Alleghany Memorial Hospital, 233 Doctors Street, Sparta, NC 28675 or to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. WAGONER Mr. Carlton James Wagoner, age 66, of Sparta, the Pine Swamp Community, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 19th., at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Bennett Wagoner in 1995. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Pam and Eddie Hall of Laurel Springs, N.C.; a grandson: Josh Hall of Greenville, N.C.; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Dorothy Caudill, Virginia and Welter Hamm, all of Sparta; and a special friend: Nancy Caudill. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday Morning, Sept 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home of Pam and Eddie Hall, 12668 N.C. Hwy 18 S. CROUSE Mr. Elmer Ray Crouse, age 73, of 461 Rash Road, Glade Valley, N.C., died Friday, Sept. 14th, at his home.He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law: Elmer, Jr., and Donna Crouse of Pfafftown, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law: Linda and Richard Banker of Shawnee, OK; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers: Thomas Allen Crouse, Jr. of Aberdeen, Md., and Clarence Crouse of Sparta; two half-brothers: Lewis and Leonard Holloway, both of Sparta; and four half-sisters: Ruby Royal and Louise Holloway, both of Aberdeen, Md., Delma Mahan of Sparta and Betty McKinney of Hillsville, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Woodruff Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. OSBORNE Mrs. Gladys N. Osborne, age 86, of Kennett Square, Pa., died Wednesday, September 12, 2001, in Kennett Square, Pa. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Peggy and Thomas Kerr of Winter Haven, FL; one son and daughter-in-law: Jim and Ann Osborne of West Grove,Pa.; two brothers: Dean Dolinger of Laurel Springs, N.C. and Dent Dolinger of Bowie, Maryland; one sister: Madeline Sheperd of Sparta; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, September 18th at 11:00 a.m. at the Transou United Methodist Church Cemetery at Laurel Springs. There will be no visitation at funeral home. CHOATE Mrs. Nellie Ayers Choate, age 93, of Glade Valley, N.C., died Wednesday morning, September 12th. At Sunbridge of Alleghany in Sparta. She was the widow of Paul Choate. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law: Linda C. and Donald Parks of Glade Valley; one son and daughter-in-law: Dean and Gail Choate of Glade Valley; two brothers and a sister-in-law: Bill Ayers of Winston-Salem, Roy and Wilma Ayers of Glade Valley; three sisters and a brother-in-law: Mable and Frank Atwood of Sparta, Amy Choate of Glade Valley and Jean Andrews of Sparta; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, September 14th, at 11:00 AM at the Cherry Lane Baptist Church with Burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. Elders Gilbert Lyon and Don Richardson will officiate. BURGISS Mrs. Lora Reeves Burgiss, 91, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2001. She was born Aug. 20, 1910, in Laurel Springs. She was the daughter of the late Dr. C.A. and Alice Thompson Reeves. She was descended from families who have lived in Alleghany County since the early 1800s. She attended St. Mary's College in Raleigh and Radford College for Women. In 1926, she married Thomas Roy Burgiss who came to Sparta to establish the area's first drug store. Mr. Burgiss preceded her in death in 1982. She is survived by her two children: Patsy Roy Sanders of Granite Quarry, and Thomas Reeves Burgiss and wife Nancy of Laurel Springs; six grandchildren: Sherri Whitesell of Charlotte, Niki Moseley of Concord, Charlotte Barringer of Charlotte, Dr. Tim Burgiss of Statesville, Brant Burgiss of Jamestown, and John Burgiss of Pfafftown; and eight great-grandchildren. A graveside service to celebrate her life will be held at Sparta Cemetery at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10 with the Rev. Glenn Graves officiating. The family will receive friends at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta one hour prior to the graveside services. If desired, memorials may be made to the Thomas Roy Burgiss Family Scholarship at the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy at Beard Hall 121, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-7360.
