HALSEY Mrs. Ruby Virginia Hash Halsey, age 86, of 3629 Piney Post Office Rd., Piney Creek, N.C., died Tuesday afternoon, October 30, 2001, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law: Carleta Halsey, Judy Halsey and Jaylene Warden, all of Piney Creek, Debbie and Loy Absher of Sparta and Jimmy Warden; six grandchildren: Matthew, Evan and Grant Warden, Virginia, and Nathanael and Cameron Absher; two great-grandchildren: Nicholas and Rachel Warden; one sister: Nina Reeves of Sparta; one brother, Wayne Hash of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with Burial in the Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the Church one hour prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. ROYALL Mr. Herman G. Royall, 87, of 149 Spring St., Elkin, passed away Wednesday morning, October 31, 2001, at Elkin Healthcare Center after a short illness. Mr. Royall was born in Alleghany County on November 29, 1913, to George M. Royall and Grace McKnight Royall. He was a member of Liberty Knob Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Chatham Manufacturing Company where he was supervisor in the binding department. He was also a veteran of World War II, receiving a Bronze medal for heroism. An avid walker, he had walked over 50,000 miles. He loved walking and gardening. Mr. Royall was a member of Masonic Lodge # 454. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Grandview Tri-County Funeral Home Chapel by Eld. Gib Lyons, and Rev. Clay Royall. Burial will follow in Holloywood Cemetery in Elkin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Lorene Royall; five brothers, R.C. Royall, Sam Royall, Dwight Royall, Andy Mac Royall and Clyde Royall; and three sisters, Louise Sexton, Thelma Holloway and Ruth Fox. Surviving are one son, David and Wanda Royall of Elkin; two granddaughters, Joy Royall of Elkin and Mary Ellen Royall of Cullowhee; three brothers, Bea (Louise) Royall of Glade Valley, Raymond (Lois) Royall of Goldsboro and George (Bobbie) Royall of Sparta; one sister, Betty Jo (Charles) Hanks of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Lucy Royall of Roaring Gap and Gina Royall of Fayetteville; and one brother-in-law, Tom Holloway of Sparta. DOUGLAS PINEY CREEK - Lena Sturgill Douglas, 92, passed away Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001. She was the widow of Norman Douglas. WOODIE Mr. Russell Allen Woodie, age 58, of 389 Collins Road, Sparta. Died Tuesday, October 23, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife: Ann H. Woodie of the home; a sister and brother-in-law: Deloris and Dean Anders of Sparta; a brother and sister-in-law: Thomas and Mary Lou Woodie of Laurel Springs, N.C.; three nephews: Darrell and David Anders, both of Sparta, and Tom Woodie of West Point, New York; a step-daughter: Melissa Wilson of Hickory, N.C.; a step-son: Joey Recchio of Yadkinville, N.C.; his mother-in-law: Gladys Hoppers of Sparta; two sisters-in-law and spouses; Janie and Tony Duncan Carol and H.R. REYNOLDS Mrs. Ethel M. Reynolds, age 89, of Port Deposit, Maryland, died Friday, October 19, 2001, at Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford, She is survived by her husband: Elzie Earl Reynolds of the home; two sons: Delmas Raynolds of Milton, Deleware and Paul Reynolds of O'Fallon, Ill; and two daughters: Doris Douglas of Port Deposit, Md, and Jerolene Lee of Edgewood, Md. Eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive. DAVIS Mr. Matthew Elwood Davis, age 21, of 13567 NC Hwy. 18 N., Ennice, died Wednesday, October 17th. SADDLER Mrs. Nonnie Williams Saddler, age 79, of 435 Marsh St., Kansas City, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 10th, at Wilshire at Lakewood Nursing Facility in Kansas City, Mo. She was the widow of Varden Saddler. She is survived by four sons: Roy Saddler and James Saddler, both of Independence, Mo.; Jerry Saddler of Sparta and Johnny Saddler of Ennice, N.C.; three daughters: Patricia Saddler of Glade Valley, N.C., Gayle Jenkins of Spring Hill, Kansas and Judy Gordon-Wyman of Lee’s Summit, Mo. Twenty-three grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by an infant son; her brother, McKinley Williams; and her parents, Wiley and Phebie Williams. YAWN ROARING GAP - Mrs. Joanne Mary Haywood Yawn, 80, of 18 Buchanan St., High Meadows Estates, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 3, 2001, at her residence. She was born in Burton-On-Trent, England, June 13, 1921, to Jonas G. Haywood and Lilly McFetridge Haywood. She is survived by her husband, Joseph "Joe" B. Yawn; a daughter, Terry L. Ivinson of Clenton Township, Mich.; a grandson, Nicolas D. Sheppard of Clenton Township, Mich.; and a brother, Gerald Haywood of Brampton, Ontario, Canada. THOMAS ROARING GAP -- Mr. John Benjamin (Gene) Thomas, Jr., 75,m of 1283 Ridge Road, High Meadow Estates, died Wednesday morning, October 10, 2001 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue. Mr. Thomas was born in Charlotte, NC on September 26, 1926 to John Benjamin and Faye Roberts Thomas. He was a D-Day Veteran serving the in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in Normandy, attaining grade of gunner's mate third class. He served as president of Noll Construction Company before forming his own company, Thomas Structure in Pineville, NC. He built and owned Crystal Springs Golf Course in Pineville. He was excellent in woodworking, but his specialty was fine graphite fly rods. He was also a gifted artist, painting landscapes, birds and flowers, all of which he chose to give away. His hobbies were fishing and golf. He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Whitehurst of Raleigh, NC and Sheryl Thomas of York, SC; two sons, John Benjamin Thomas III of Lake Wylie, SC and Robert Thomas of Fort Mill, SC; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Thomas of Matthews, NC. A memorial service will be held Saturday morning at 11 AM, October 13, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Pastor Lon Leatherland will officiate. CHOATE Mr. Billy Carroll Choate, 75, of 373 Choate Dairy Road died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2201, at his residence. He was born in Alleghany County on April 23, 1926, to Dr. P.L. and Myrtle Beeker Choate. He was a lifelong dairy farmer, a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy and a member of the Sparta Presbyterian Church. He is survived by three daughters, Lynn Bennett of Charlotte, Holly Choate of Virginia Beach, Va., and Debbie Ham of Thomaston, Ga.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery.
