BEDSAUL Mrs. Faye Edwards Bedsaul, age 77, of 76 Choate Avenue, Sparta, N.C., died Wednesday, December 19, 2001, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Estal Bedsaul. She is survived by a sister: Gaye Mc Cann of Sparta; four nieces: Shelby Brice of Winston-Salem, N.C., Linda Moore of Mt. Airy, N.C., Brenda Washington of Sparta, N.C., and Carolyn Eastridge of Ennice, N.C. four nephews: Dwayne Murphy of Independence, Va., Wade Murphy of Roaring Gap, N.C., Charles McCann of Rocky Mt., N.C., and Dallas Bedsaul of Ennice, N.C.; and a special friend, Candy Smith of Sparta, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. The family will be at their respective homes, and request no food.
NUTTALL Mr. David F. Nuttall, age 64, of 28 Caroline St., Rochester, New York, died Friday, December 21, 2001, at the Highland Hospital in Rochester, New York. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Perry Nuttall. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law: Kenneth D. Nuttall, and William F. And Stephanie Nuttall, all of Rochester, New York; two granddaughters: Naomi and Heidi Nuttall of Rochester, New York; three sisters-in-law, Gertha Alley, Francis Evans and Bertha Choate, all of Sparta; five brothers-in-law: James, Ambrose, Dean and Buddy Perry, all of Sparta, and Lonnie Perry of Wilkesboro, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, December 31, at 11:00 AM at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
WAGONER Mr. Harold Franklin Wagoner, age 63, of Sunbridge of Alleghany, Sparta, N.C., died Monday morning, December 24, 2001, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by three sisters and brothers-in-law: Betty Ruth Hicks and Pete Crowder of Wilkesboro, N.C., Linda and Charles Perry of Glade Valley, N.C., and Virginia and Roger Simons of Sparta; and two uncles: Page and Ray Wagoner, both of Sparta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Wagoner Family Cemetery on Rivers Edge Road in Sparta. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home of Linda and Charles Perry, 119 Paradise Lane, Glade Valley, N.C.
CHAMBERS Mr. James C. Chambers Jr., age 75, of Roaring Gap, died of heart failure on December 19, 2001, in Mount Airy, N.C. Son of James Corbett Chambers and Mary Virginia Carothers, both of West Virginia. He was born in Brownsville, Texas on June 22, 1926. He spent his early years in both south Texas and in eastern Tennessee. His mountain upbringing instilled in him a life-long love of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Jim served briefly in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and then attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville before relocating again to south Texas, and briefly Monterrey, Mexico. He later began working for the St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co. in Virginia and then in North Carolina. He was with St. Paul for 24 years and served as General Manager in Charlotte, N.C. from 1968-1981. Shortly after retiring, he moved to Alleghany County, N.C. to fulfill his dream of returning to the mountains. Jim was an avid reader and supporter of local libraries. He served on the Board of Directors for the Alleghany County Library and the Northwestern Regional Library association based in Elkin, N.C. He had an insatiable thirst for historical knowledge of all kinds but especially Civil War history. Jim was also a student of the culinary arts and a creative chef who showed his appreciation of his family and friends by cooking for them. He leaves behind his loving wife of 23 years, Allene O. Chambers; his daughter and son-in-law, Virginia Chambers and Myles Friedman; two grandchildren, Jack and Bailey; his two brothers, Richard and George Chambers; his two sisters, Rosemary Reynolds and Charlotte Kludzweit; and many, many family members and friends who loved him dearly. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 22, at Sparta Baptist Church, 202 Main Street, Sparta, N.C. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. The family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to the Alleghany County Library, 122 North Main Street, Sparta, N.C. 28675; the Christ Church Episcopal Building Fund, P.O. Box 1866, Sparta, N.C. 28675; or to a charity of the donor's choice
DEBORD Dr. John William, (Bill), 46, of Independence, Va. passed away Thursday, December 20, 2001 at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va. He was born on May 28, 1955 in Smyth County, the Rich Valley Community, to Raymond Lee and Lee Etta Buchanan DeBord. He was a co-owner of Twin Oaks Veterinary Hospital, Sparta, N.C. He graduated from Rich Valley High School, Salutatorian of his class. He attended Emory and Henry and University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, Athens, Ga. He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Stephen Michael DeBord. Surviving are his wife, Ann Katherine Watson DeBord; two sons, Willie DeBord and Danny DeBord, both of the home; his mother, Lee Etta Buchanan DeBord of Rich Valley, Va.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Raymond Lee DeBord of Rich Valley, Va. and Jeffrey Blake and Anna Leigh DeBord of Saltville, Va.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and an uncle. The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va., where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 to 9 p.m. The body will be taken to the Ridgedale United Methodist Church in Rich Valley, Va. Sunday at 2 p.m. where the family will receive friends for one hour. Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. at the Ridgedale U.M. Church Cemetery with the Rev. Rich Cardot and the Rev. Harold E. Morgan, III officiating. Flowers will be graciously accepted or memorial contributions may be made to your local rescue squad or local volunteer fire department.
HINES Mr. Michael Dale Hines, age 43, of Chicago, Illinois, died Saturday, December 15th in Chicago. He was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandfather, Elmer Sparks, and his Paternal Grandfather, Willie Hines. He is survived by a son: Joshua Dale Hines of Concord, N.C.; his father: Wiley Rex Hines of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his mother: Bonnie Sue Sparks of Rural Hall, N.C.; one brother: Phillip Stevenson Sparks of Rural Hall, N.C.; three sisters: Pamela Gail Breedlove of Chicago, Lynn Smith of Seven Valleys, Pa., and Debbie Kipera of York, Pa. maternal grandmother: Golar Sparks of Sparta, and his paternal grandmother, Lela Hines of Sparta. Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the Church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. The family sincerely request that in lieu of flowers, Memorials be made to Grandview Memorial Funeral Home, P.O. Box 10, Sparta, N.C. 28675, to help on the funeral expenses.
MOXLEY Mr. Lenwood "Jack" Moxley, age 66, of 9245 Glade Valley Rd., Ennice, N.C., died Wednesday morning, December 12, 2001, at his home. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Teresa and Ronnie Hawks of Galax, Va.; two grandchildren: Leigh Ann and Jason Hawks, both of Galax; three sisters; Helen Moxley of Ennice, N.C., Ella Norman of Ennice, N.C., and Eva Todd of Glade Valley, N.C.; and special friends; Ruth Edwards of Galax, Ricky Spurlin and Raymond Smith, both of Ennice. N.C. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday morning at the Old Saddle Mountain Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery. The body will lie-in-state from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday morning at the Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Church. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in Charge of the arrangements.
