CROUSE Mrs. Crystal Steelman Heinz Crouse died Saturday, March 30, at the Fitzgerald Health Care Center at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem following a long illness. Mrs. Crouse was born July 9, 1905, to the late Crystal Blossom Thrift and Arthur Burgess Steelman in Winston-Salem. She was the wife of the late Rush Floyd Crouse of Sparta. Predeceasing her in addition to her parents and husband were a sister, Frances Steelman Carroll, in 1950; and two brothers, Robert Wiley Steelman, in 1946, and A.B. Steelman Jr., who died in infancy in 1912. Mrs. Crouse was a member of Sparta Methodist Church and was a homemaker through the years. She had lived in Sparta for about 45 years before returning to Winston-Salem in July 1982 to live at the Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community. Surviving are a son, George Albert Heinz and wife Nettie of Aspen, Colo.; three granddaughters, Laura Lee Heinz Williams and husband Marklin of Larchmont, N.Y., Sarah Heinz Meader and husband Dan of Dallas, Texas, and Amy Heinz Delgado and husband Jorge of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jean Aleen Steelman of Arbor Acres. A memorial service will be held at Arbor Acres Fellowship Hall in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, April 2, at 10:30 a.m. with visitation following. The Rev. Douglas Suggs, chaplain of Arbor Acres and the Rev. Jack Yarbrough, associate minister of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem will officiate. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Shiloh Methodist Church Graveyard in Alleghany County conducted by the Rev. Suggs. CLINE Mr. Willie Mack "Shot" Cline, age 69, of 9744 Glade Valley Road, Ennice, NC., died Friday evening, March 29, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Joyce "Toby" Arrington Cline of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Terry Lee and Robin Lang of Ennice; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Edward M. Cline of Raleigh, NC, and James D. and Karen Cline of Willoughby Hills, Ohio; four grandchildren, Cody Dodaro, Robin Adam Lang, Mary Joyce Cline and Mack Edward Cline; six sisters, Neilda (Joe) Roberts of Ennice, Velva Blakeslee, Galax, Va., Audra Edwards, Independence, Va., Betty Cline, Galax, Lula Endicott, Crawfordsville, Indiana, and France (Ron) Smail; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Fairview Cemetery. McKINNEY Mr. Francis Stanfield McKinney, age 86, of Kennesaw, Georgia, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, in Georgia. He is survived by his wife, Georgene Mitchell McKinney of Kennesaw, Ga.; three sons, Kevin McKinney, Tucson, Arizona, Donald McKinney, San Diego, California, and Michael McKinney, of Virginia; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted Monday morning April lst., at 11:00 a.m. at the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery near Sparta. Family and friends will gather at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta at 10:00 a.m. Monday.
McCOIN Alma Lou McCoin, age 76, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She is survived by a son, David McCoin of Florida; two sisters, Grace Welch of West Jefferson, NC.; Ottie Elliott of Elkton, Maryland; several nieces, nephews and cousins survive. A graveside service will be conducted Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in the Whitehead Community. Family and friends will gather at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning.
DELP Mr. Tommy Gale Delp, age 64, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, NC., died Sunday afternoon, March 24, 2002, at Sunbridge of Alleghany in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his parents, Crockett and Verna Wyatt Delp. He is survived by two aunts, Virginia Brown and Laura Crouse; and several cousins, Carol Gambill, Brenda Hash, Mack Douglas, Joyce Dixon, Burton Osborne, Darlene Walls, James Osborne, Jones Wyatt, Jelene LeVan and Bob Wyatt. Special friends; Alton Paisley and Norma Absher. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Mt. ESTEP Mr. James Wilmer Estep, age 74, of 105 Windsor Dr., Galax, Va., died Friday morning, March 22, 2002, at the Twin County Community Hospital in Galax, Va. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Edington Estep of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Doug Moore of Kernersville, NC; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Brian Moore of Kernersville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Woodrow and Rose Estep of Sparta, NC, John A. and Jo Estep of Carmel, California; and five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Elsie Collins of Sparta, Viola Church of Laurel Springs, NC, Velma Vaughn of Sparta, Thelma Lee and Elmer Dills of Greensboro, NC, and Agnes and Ernest Joines of Sparta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta with Burial in the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in the Stratford Community. VAN DUSEN Racine Fender Van Dusen died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Arbor Acres Tri-Ad United Methodist Home in Winston-Salem. She was born in Sparta on July 25, 1922, a twin daughter of John C. And Dallas Taylor Fender. She graduated from Piney Creek High School and Draughon Business College. She organized the first girl's basketball team at Draughon's in 1941, and played on the team. She worked as a secretary for 10 years in Washington, D.C., and during World War II. Mrs. Van Dusen retired as a captain after 20 years in Civil Air Patrol (USAF Aux.), having served in Washington, D.C., and in Virginia, Ohio, Oregon, Alaska and North Carolina. She also was primary Sunday school teacher and Gray Lady chairman of SE Alaska, ARC, Anchorage, Alaska. Mrs. Van Dusen returned to North Carolina in November 1964 and was secretary for the N.C. Department of Transportation, retiring in 1979 because of cancer. She was a member of South Fork Baptist Church in Alleghany County for 50 years. Survivors include a brother, James Quentin Fender of Atlanta; three nephews and a niece; several cousins; two great- nieces; and four great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother and two sisters, Reba F. Irwin and Elizabeth F. Nichols; and two nephews, Gerald Dean and James Ronald Irwin. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon at the Landmark Baptist Church Cemetery in Alleghany County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
STUBBS Mr.James Michael Stubbs, age 43, of 465 Ballpark Rd., Sparta, NC., died Tuesday, March 19,2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by a son, Shawn Christopher Eatmon of Chesapeake, Va.; his mother and step-father, Sandra and James David Caudill of Glade Valley, NC.; his father and step-mother, William Jesse and Loyce Stubbs of Albany, Ga.; a half-sister, Lisa Ann Caudill of Marion NC.; a half-brother, William Jesse Stubbs III of Chicago, Illinois; his grandfather and step-grandmother, Ralph Leon and Elizabeth Seery of Virginia Beach, Va.; and his step-grandmother, Leona G. Caudill of Elkin, NC. Six step-brothers and sister also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. RECTOR Mr. Liford E. Rector, age 84, of 287 Duncan St., Sparta, NC., died Monday morning, March 18, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Dema Douglas Rector of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Louise and John Bateman of Sparta; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dwayne Rector of the home, and Roy and Wanda Rector of Greensboro, NC; a step-son, Herbert Douglas of Sparta; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jessie Smith of Winston-Salem, NC, and Lola McArter of Coatsville, Pa; and three brothers, Bayne Rector of Maryland, Lewis Rector of California, and Warren Rector of Roanoke, Va. BEDSAUL Mrs. Collie G. Bedsaul, age 92, of 76 Edmonds Rd., Ennice, N.C., died Sunday morning, March 17, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Omar Bedsaul, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Clara Atkinson. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Melva and Claude Dancy of Sparta, and Ethelene Kyles of High Point, N.C., and Bill Atkinson of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ivan and Louise Bedsaul of Galax, Va., and Jimmy Bottomley of the home; a step-son, Kenneth Bedsaul of Ennice; two step-daughters, Lorraine Jennings of Sparta, and Opal Bedsaul of Galax, Va; and special caregiver, Kathy Hanes of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery. PRUITT Mrs. Marie Evans Pruitt, 79, of 4688 Shawtown Rd., Ennice, NC. , died Friday, March 15, 2002, at her residence. She was the widow of William Albert Pruitt. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Joe Caldwell of Sparta, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Linda Pruitt of Ennice; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eula Mae and Leo Tompkins of Ennice, and Alma Addison of Aberdeen, Maryland. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Glade Creek Union Baptist Church Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, friends may call at the home of Bill and Linda Pruitt at 4688 Shawtown Rd., Ennice, at any time. FENDER Mr. James Lundy Fender, age 38, of 469 Cahn Rd., Sparta, NC., died Friday morning, March 8, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his father and step-mother, Jim and Ellen Fender of Sparta; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Randy Crouse of Elkin, NC.; a brother, Jason Fender of Sparta; a step-brother, Darrell Maynor of Sparta; his paternal grandmother, Gladys Fender of Traphill, NC.; two nephews, Ben Andrews of Sparta, and Jamie Crouse of Elkin; and a niece, Wynter Crouse of Elkin. MC CANN Mr. Jackson "Jack" Herbert McCann, 55, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002. He was born Nov. 15, 1946, in Sparta to Helen Caudill and Clifton Herbert "Herb" McCann and was a member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church. He was the owner of McCann Enterprises and served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Judy Gladue McCann; his father of Winston-Salem; his mother of Glade Valley; two sisters, Judy Edenfield of Florida and Nancy Wright of California; a brother, Mike McCann of Sparta; and a half sister, Kelly Marks of Harrisburg. Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Friday at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Craddock. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Friday evening at the church before the service. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cherry Lane Cemetery in Glade Valley. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin Wyatt.
