MURPHY Mr. Robert W. (Bob) Murphy, Sr., died Sunday afternoon, April 28, 2002, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bob Murphy, Jr., of the home; Brian Richard and Angela Beth Murphy of Glade Valley, NC; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherri Lyn and Joseph W. Powell III, of Pensacola, Florida; three grandchildren, Christopher Shane Murphy, Chrystal Megan Lyn Powell and Amy Catherine Baker; and one brother, Richard Murphy of Florida. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday morning, May 1st, at the St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Murphy family.
BROWN Mrs. Sarah Florence Gann Brown, age 67, of 2917 Pine Swamp Rd., Sparta, NC., died Wednesday evening, April 24th, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. She is survived by her husband, Dwight Brown of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Steve Carpenter of Ennice, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Amanda Brown of Sparta; six grandchildren, Cpl. Brady Carpenter of Camp LeJeune, NC, Stacy Carpenter and Jason Carpenter of Ennice, Jim Brown of Misenheimer, NC, and Ashley Brown and Mitchell Brown of Sparta; two sisters, Virginia Jones and Frankie Denton of Adairsville, Georgia; a brother, Danny Gann of Fayetteville, Georgia; and a special friend, Dallas Crouse of Sparta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Pine Swamp Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. YOUNG Mr. Arnold L. Young, age 72, of 1198 Pine Swamp Rd., Sparta, NC., died Saturday evening, April 20, 2002, at his home. Mr. Young was born on June 15, 1929 at Fort McPherson, Georgia, to Lora Jones and Sterlin Young. He graduated from Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC, and then served in the U.S. Army in Korea where he received both the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for bravery. He received his law degree from the Wake Forest College School of Law in 1964 and began practicing law in Sparta, NC. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Y. Young of the home; two sons, Charles Young and wife Carla of Lansing, NC, Julian Young and wife Kim of Knighdale, NC; and one daughter, Marty Young Franklin and husband Mike of Wilkesboro, NC; eight grandchildren, Lora and John Young of Lansing, Jane, Rebekah, Julianna and Rachel Franklin of Wilkesboro, and Ava and Julia Young of Knightdale; and one brother, William Young and wife Sharon of Jasper, Georgia. He will also be missed by two faithful office assistants, Melanie Wagoner and Sharon Casstevens of Sparta; brother- and sisters-in-law William and Mary Frances Young of Kinards, SC, Martha Fowler of Anderson, SC, and Nancy Young of Burlington, NC; several nieces and nephews; and a host of loving friends. Mr. Young has been active in the civic life of Alleghany County. He was a member of the Sparta Presbyterian Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and served as an elder for many years. He was an active member of the Lions Club, serving the Sparta chapter as president and serving as district secretary. He was honored as Lion of the Year and received the Jack Stickley Fellow award as well as receiving recognition as a Melvin Jones Fellow. His particular interest in the Lions Club was the annual Sparta Lions Club Horse Show. He was also active on the Fairgrounds committee for many years. He recently began serving as the delegate for Alleghany County on the Senior Tar Heel Legislature. He was always supportive of community activities such as Boy Scouts of America, 4-H, VFW, Alleghany Horseman Association, and other organizations. Mr. Young was extremely interested in and supportive of young people who aspired to become attorneys. Many times he employed law students in his office as interns. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Sparta Presbyterian Church with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. BASABE Mr. Martin Soto Basabe, age 51, of 11894 Hwy. 18 N., Ennice, NC, died Friday evening, April 20, 2002, at his residence. He is survived by a son, Crisoforo Soto Abarca of Mexico; a step-son, Randy Snow of Laurel Springs, NC; daughters, Evlalia Soto Abarca of California, Holga Soto Abarca, Ebilia Soto Abarca, both of Mexico and Sylvia Soto of Sparta, NC; five brothers, one sister, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The body will be taken to his home Sunday evening where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. The body will then be sent to Mexico for funeral services and burial.
BEDSAUL Mr. Ralph Reece Bedsaul, age 65, of 9120 Glade Valley, Rd., Ennice, N.C., died Sunday morning, April 14, 2002, at his home. He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Bedsaul; a daughter, Rebecca Edwards; a brother, Russell Bedsaul; a grandson, Joseph Edwards; and son-in-law, Bryan Bowers. He is survived by his wife, Treva Higgins Bedsaul of the home; a daughter, Sandra Bowers of Woodlawn, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Vickie Bedsaul of Ennice, NC; four grandchildren, Brandon, Jill, Megan and Kayla; his mother, Zenna Todd of Ennice, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Clint and Linda Bedsaul of Sparta; and nephew and family, Brad, Noel and Brooke Bedsaul of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery. ANDREWS Mrs. Zona Rutherford Andrews, age 87, of 207 Bledsoe Creek, Rd., Sparta, NC., died Saturday morning, April 13, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Bert Andrews. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Roberta and Thomas Reese of Sterling, Va., and Rose Marie Krimm of Hydes, Maryland; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Evelyn Andrews of Max Meadows, Va., Alfred and Juanita Andrews of Moravian Falls, NC, and Alvin and Helen Andrews of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Helen Brewer of Piney Creek, NC. Six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Crouse Family Cemetery in the Pine Swamp Community. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. NICHOLAS Mrs. Annie Marie Nicholas, age 76, of 50 Nicholas Lane, Glade Valley, NC., died Saturday morning, April 13, 2002, at her residence. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Nicholas of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherlee and Robert Benge of Mt. Airy, NC, and Sussie and Jack Cook of West Virginia; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Martha Loggins of Piney Creek, NC.; three brothers, Raymond and Herbert Crouse of Glade Valley, and Earl Crouse of Deleware; three sisters, Viola Wood of Sparta, Tressie Crouse of Dobson, NC, and Jannie Wagoner of Winston-Salem, NC. Six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren also survives. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Mtn. GIBILISCO Mr. Salvatore, age 85, of Orlando, Florida, died Friday, April 12, 2002, in Orlando. He is survived by his wife, Lee Gibilisco of the home; and two sons, Bob and Allen Gibilisco, both of Florida. Survivors in the area include an aunt, Opal Evans of Sparta; two nieces, Betty UpChurch of Laurel Springs, NC, and Phyllis Dowell of Sparta; and a nephew, Harold J. Edwards of Piney Creek. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in the Stratford Community. The family will gather at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday.
MILLER Mr. Van Franklin "Pud" Miller Jr., age 77 of Laurel Springs, NC, died Tuesday morning, April 9, 2002, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. Mr. Miller was born February 18, 1925 in Alleghany County to Van Sr. and Loy Evans Miller. He was an US Army veteran and served in both Word War II and the Korean Conflict. He is survived by six children, Robert Steven Miller of Laurel Springs, William Van Miller of Harrisonburg, Va., Tony Franklin Miller of Charlotte, Michael Elliott Miller of Charlotte, James Kenneth Miller of Boomer, and Amy Miller Worley of Wilkesboro; and two sisters, Barbara Miles of Sparta and Betty York of Greensboro; five grandchildren; He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Miller; a brother, Fielden Miller; and his parents. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon, April 11th. at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Bobby Elledge will officiate. Military rites will be conducted at the gravesite by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034. SENTER Armon Rhoten Senter, age 72, of Sparta, NC., died Friday, April 5, 2002 at the Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Mr. Senter was born on September 10, 1929, in Surry County, NC. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Belle Hiatt, and his son, Jimmy Steve Senter. He served his country in the United States Air force during the Korean Conflict. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at 6:00 p.m., at the Laurel Springs Baptist Church. Rev. Dana Hines will officiate. A military service will follow at the church. Mr. Senter is survived by two daughters, Susan Tucker of Sparta, and Jane and husband Glenn Gibson of Greer, SC; a sister, Thelma Morris of Mt. Airy, NC; nieces Tammy Masden of Orange Park, FL, and Lynn Gentry of Mt. Airy; nephews Benny Butcher and David Morris both of Mt. Airy; and five grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Mike Ashley of the home; a daughter, Audrey Clyburn of the home; her mother, Ruth Fender of Sparta; a sister and brother-in-law, Mattie and Howard Blevins of Laurel Springs, NC; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Jeanette Fender of Sparta, and Robert and Rita Fender of Galax, Va; and a half-sister, Marsha Boone of Sparta.
