BARLOW Mrs. Carmen Joines Barlow, age 86, of 43 Rifle Range Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Thursday evening, May 30, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Risco Barlow. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Ed Coffey of Hudson, Wisconsin; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Debbie Barlow of Roanoke, Va; two grandchildren, Wynde Coffey of Minniapolis, Minnisota and Heath Coffey of Hudson, Wisconsin; and a sister, Earlene Miles of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. BLEVINS Mrs. Nina Spurlin Evans Blevins, age 85, of 204 Bailey Road, Ennice, N.C., died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley and Richard Inman of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; and Doris Bateman of Ennice; five sons and three daughtes-in-law, Billy and Patricia Evans of Sparta; Reed and Fonda Evans of High Point, N.C.; Bobby and Judy Evans of White Plains, N.C.; Grover Alton Evans of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and James Evans of Glade Valley, NC; two brothers, Jim Spurlin and Camet Spurlin, both of Ennice; 16 Grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Crab Creek Cemetery. SMITH Mrs. Ethel Poole Smith, age 77, of 255 Shenandoah Dr., Johnson City, Tennessee, the daughter of the late David H. And Maggie Richardson Poole, died Thursday morning, May 30, 2002, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Thomas H. Smith of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David A. Smith of St. Louis, Missouri; Craig A. And Kathy Smith of Johnson City, Tennessee; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and A.J. Gilland of Zuni, New Mexico; one brother and sister-in-law, James L. And Betty Sue Poole of Sparta; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Virginia and Bays Hash of Sparta; and Lucy Royall of Roaring Gap, NC; a brother-in-law, Joe M. Andrews of Sparta; two grandsons, Eliot Smith and Eric Smith, both of Johnson City, Tn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Lois and Bower Irwin of Fayettville, NC; and several nieces and nephews. LARUE Mrs. Dorothy Caldwell Larue, age 48, of 243 Grandridge Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She is survived by her husband, Ernest Larue of the home; her mother, Lavern Caldwell of Elkin; a brother, Donald Caldwell of Galax, Va.; a sister Kay Sizemore of Elkin; and step-daughters, Melissa Richardson of Sparta; and Linda Burcham of Galax. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. DUNCAN Mr. Kemp Woodrow Duncan Sr., 87, of 94 Kemp St. died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Sunbridge of Alleghany in Sparta. Mr. Duncan was born June 13, 1914, in Alleghany County to Glenn L. and Rose Pardue Duncan. He was a well-known Realtor and business-man. He was a partner in the Duncan Brothers Auction and Realty Co. for many years. He was a member of Sparta Presbyterian Church. Mr. Duncan was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Cass Duncan. He is survived by a daughter and her spouse, Renda and Tim Senatro of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sons, K.W. Duncan Jr. of Charlotte and Jerry and wife Karen Duncan of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren Kemp Evans Duncan, Melissa Duncan Gibbons, Luke Bryant Duncan, Donna Lynn Duncan, Matthew K. Watson, Samantha Senatro, Alyssa Senatro and Chrissy Senatro; great-grandchildren Graham Evans Duncan, Michael Patrick Gibbons and Duncan Joseph Gibbons; three sisters, Donna Harden and Gretchen (Alex) Bloodworth, all of Sparta, and Glena (Hoyt) Osborne of Inde-pendence, Va.; two brothers, Champ (Maxine) Duncan and Dale (Peggy) Duncan, all of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. EDWARDS Mr. Rufus Claude Edwards, age 75, of 2037 Pine Swamp Rd., Sparta, NC., died Monday afternoon, May 20, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kellee Carmichael in 1994. He is survived by his wife, Edith Crouse Edwards of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Judy Carmichael of Sparta; Melia and Joe Edwards of Lewisville, NC; a granddaughter, Brandy Carmichael, a brother and sister-in-law; Eld. Dan and Jolene Edwards of Sparta; a sister, Lorene Underwood of Yadkinville, NC; and four great-grandchildren, Brittanee, Brandon, Kayla and Kriston. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Crouse Family Cemetery in the Pine Swamp Community. DOWELL Billy Joe Dowell, age 27, of Carson Wood Road, Laurel Springs, NC., died Monday, May 20, 2002, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC., from injuries received in an automobile accident. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Mabe Dowell of the home; two daughters, Tori Mae Dowell of West Jefferson, NC; Haley Melinda Dowell of the home; his parents, Earnest and Phyllis Dowell of Sparta; a sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca Sue and Tracey Moore of Dugspur, Va.; his grandparents, Breece and Amelia Cornett of Independence, Va.; Leona Dowell of Sparta; and father and mother-in-law, Dean and Wanda Mabe of Sparta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Piney Creek Methodist Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, friends may call at the home of his parents at 16 Blevins St., in Sparta, at any time.
HART Mrs. Georgia Long Hart, age 91, of 13596 N.C. Hwy. 18 S., Laurel Springs, N.C., died Monday morning, May 13, 2002, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Ulene and Dan Taylor. She was the widow of William David Hart. Besides Ulene and Dan, she is also survived by daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Billy Smith of Ennice, NC; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Meadow Fork Cemetery in Laurel Springs. BROWN Mrs. Shirley Ann Parsons Brown, age 65, of Eastwood Drive, North Wilkesboro, widow of Elbert Gwyn Brown, died Sunday, May 12, 2002 at Britthaven Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 PM, May 15, 2002, at Cricket Baptist Church with the Rev. Dean Rector and the Rev. Larry Adams officiating. Burial will be in Davis Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Brown was born April 12, 1937 in Wilkes County daughter of Lawrence and Hazel Blevins Parsons. She was retired from Golden Needles and was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, William Gwyn Brown of Millers Creek, Barry Edwin Brown of Statesville, and Anthony Ray Brown of Boone; her mother, of North Wilkesboro; two sisters, Anna Gant of North Wilkesboro, and Mary Dowell of Wilkesboro; two brothers, Lawrence C. Parsons, Jr. of Wilkesboro, and Gary Parsons of North Wilkesboro; one half-sister, Linda Johnson of Wilkesboro; and three half brothers, Rev. Larry Adams, Rev. Dean Adams both of North Wilkesboro and Bobby Adams of Winston Salem. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Tuesday night from 6:30 until 8:30.
EDWARDS Mrs. Georgie Bryan Edwards, age 78, of 1691 Independence Rd., Sparta, NC, died Friday morning, May 10, 2002, at her home. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Faw. She is survived by her husband, Ernest E. GUNTER Mr. Eldon Gunter, age 78, of Roe St., Sparta, NC., died Tuesday evening, May 7, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Turner Gunter. Mr. Gunter was born May 4, 1924, in Harlan County, Kentucky. He was reared at and graduated from high school at Oxford Orphanage. He served in the US Navy for 20 years and retired from IBM as senior staff engineer. He was an avid sports fan, particularly high school sports and was very supportive of high school athletes. He is survived by a son, Michael Gunter of Durham, NC; a daughter, Connie Sue Birmingham of Huntersville, NC; three grandchildren, Christopher and Alice Marie Birmingham and William Kyle Gunter; and two sisters, Paralee Thomas of Cleveland, Ohio, and Pauline Olexa of Peoria, Arizona. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday afternoon, May 11th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Sparta Cemetery.
