SHEPHERD Mrs. Charles Burgess Shepherd, age 76, a resident of the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center in Independence, Va., died Monday, June 28, 1999 at that facility. Wilkesboro, N.C., and Sandy Woodie of Piney Creek, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; a special caregiver, Jo O'Neal of Independence, Va.; and a special friend, Bradley George. CROUSE Miss Wilma G. Crouse, age 86, of Pine Ridge Apartment # 29, Sparta, N.C., died Monday, June 28, 1999 at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by one niece, Mary C. Tuttle of Kernersville, N.C. Many cousins, friends and neighbors also survive. JOINES Elder Jimmy R. Joines, 65, of 162 Duncan St., Sparta, N.C., died Sunday, June 6, 1999, at his home. He is survived by one daughter: Rebecca Ann Edwards of Sparta; two sons and daughters-in-law: David and Opal Joines of Va.; Tim and Tina Joines of Glade Valley, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty C. Joines. DILLON Mr. James Howard Dillon, 69, of Sparta, NC, died Sunday, June 6, 1999, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital. He was born February 23, 1930, in South Bend Ind., to Elmer and May Dillon and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating form St. Ignatius High School, he served in the U.S. Navy. He later attended John Carroll University, where he received a degree in sociology. In 1956, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a special agent and worked in Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Norfolk, Montgomery and Philadelphia. He later served as an FBI congressional liaison to the United States Senate. While working in Norfolk, Va., he met and married Elizabeth Doughton Dillon. They had two children, Mary Margaret and Patrick. In 1972, the Dillon family moved to Alleghany County, NC, and lived in Laurel Springs for nine years before moving to Sparta. He served as one of the founding members of St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta. He laughed easily and always enjoyed a good joke. His Irish heritage was important to him and he loved listening to Celtic and Gaelic folk music. Throughout his life, he remained a wonderfully loving and devoted husband and father and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife: Betsy, of the home; one daughter: Mary Margaret of Raleigh, NC; one son: Patrick, of Los Angeles, Ca.; and one brother: Father Dennis Dillon of Cleveland, Ohio. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, June 8, at 1 p.m. at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta, followed by a graveside service at Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, June 7, from 7-9 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. GREENE Mr. Robert Leff (Bob) Greene, age 64, of 44 Old Greene Road, Ennice, NC, died Thursday, June 3, 1999, at his home. An Army veteran, he served in the Korean War. He was a retired employee of Blue Ridege Electric Membership Cooperative. He was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 1995 where he was serving at the time of his death. MILLER Mrs. Dorothy Taylor Miller, age 81, of 403 Mtn. Valley Road, Laurel Springs, NC, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: Stanley and Thelma Miller of West Jefferson, NC, Tony and Grace Miller, and Jimmy and Amanda Miller, both of Laurel Springs, NC; six grandchildren; three brothers: Frank Taylor and Dan Taylor, both of Laurel Springs, NC, and Stuart Taylor of Sparta, NC; and three sisters: Grace Pruitt, Faye Hines and Tina Hash, all of Sparta, NC. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, June 3, 1999, at 4:00 PM at the Pine Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Dean Adams and Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiating. The body will be place in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. Burial will follow in the Cranberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-9 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
