MITCHELL Bays Cockerham Mitchell, Sr., 59, died Sunday, September 29, 2002. Born in Sparta, N.C., he was the son of the late Carlis Lee and Mary Phipps Mitchell. He received an associate's degree in Civil Technology from Gaston Technical College and a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Belmont Abbey College. He was an employee of Rea Construction Company for thirty-nine and a half years, and Vice-President and Area Manager in Columbia for the past two years. Mr. Mitchell was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Sparta, member and director of the South Carolina Asphalt Paving Association and member and director of the South Carolina Transportation Policy and Research Council. Surviving are his wife, Judith Leonard "Judy" Mitchell; daughter Mary Mitchell Beall and family Ben and Jack of Burgholzhausen, Germany; daughter Joan Marie Mitchell and family Jeff, Nicole and Chad of Charlotte, N.C.; son Bays Cockerham Mitchell, Jr., and family Lin and Drew of Charlotte, N.C.; sister Emma Lee Mitchell Wyatt and husband Bill of Sparta, N.C.; step-mother Margie Mitchell of Sparta, N.C., and sisters-in-law Barbara Smith, Carolyn Lundy and Debra Leonard. Visitation will be Tuesday 7-9 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A second visitation will be Wednesday 7-9 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home, Sparta. Service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Shiloh United Methodist Church, Sparta, N.C. with Burial in the church cemetery. KENNEDY Mrs. Iva Mae Caudill Kennedy, age 80, of 570 Mt. Carmel Rd., Sparta, NC., died Thursday afternoon, September 26, 2002, at her home. She was the widow of McDale Kennedy. She is survived by a daughter, Joan Kennedy of Sparta, NC.; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Stephen and Anita Kennedy of Sparta; four grandsons, Barry Kennedy, and Aaron, Brandon and Taylor Halsey, all of Sparta; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Bob Johnson, and Hazel and Page Wagoner, all of Sparta;and a sister-in-law, Eula Hauser of Sparta. CAUDILL Mr. Clay Franklin Caudill, age 79, of 924 Second St., Manteo, NC., and formerly of Alleghany County, died Thursday, September 26, 2002, at the Albermarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, NC. He was born in AlleghanyCounty, October 14, 1922, to Hillary Cleve and Cecelia Edwards Caudill. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He retired as Assistant Superintendent of the National Park Service, Cape Hatteras, NC., He was a member of the Manteo Baptist Church, Manteo Lions Club and former member of Manteo Band Boosters. He is survived by a daughter, Janet McGaskill, of Wanchese, NC; four sons, Dale Caudill of Boone, NC., Jerry Caudill of Kings Mountain, NC, Phillip Caudill of Knotts Island, and Timothy Caudill of Nags Head, NC; three sisters, Zelma Andrews of Glade Valley, NC, Muriel Moxley of Galax, Va., and Alma C. Gregson of Greensboro, NC; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Manteo Baptist Church in Manteo, NC. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday afternoon, September 29th. at 2:00 p.m. at the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery in Sparta. EDWARDS Cassandra (Cassie) Weigand Edwards, age 45, of 190 Lake St. F-31, Sparta, NC., died Monday afternoon, September 23, 2002, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Joey Edwards of Piney Creek, NC.; two sons, Cole and Lee Edwards of Sparta; her mother, Joleen Earnest Weigand of Sparta; her father, Guy Frank Weigand of Thomasville, Ga.; four sisters, Franni Richardson of Andros Island, the Bahamas, Gar Weldon of Andros Island, the Bahamas, Katie Weigand of Thomasville, Ga., and Crystal McKenna of Salisbury, NC. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. The family will gather at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. Thursday.
PRUITT Mr. Posie Paul Pruitt, age 87, of 10684 Hwy. 18S., Laurel Springs, NC., died Friday evening, September 20, 2002, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Pruitt. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Linda Pruitt of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Wanda Pruitt of the home; a granddaughter and husband, Carol and Darrell Greene of Laurel Springs, NC; a grandson and wife, Marc and Angel Pruitt of Atlanta, Ga.; and two great-grandchildren, Whitney and Hunter Greene of Laurel Springs, NC. LOVELAND Mr. William P. Loveland, age 82, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife, Pauline "Polly" Cheek Loveland of the home and formerly of Alleghany County. Three nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Woodruff Cemetery. BUSIC Vicky Lynn Wooten Busic, age 41, of 254 Collins Rd., Sparta, NC, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at her home. She was preceded in death by her father, John Wooten. BLACK Mrs. Bette Black, 69 of 1954 Mt. Zion Church Road, Piney Creek, NC.,A native of Wilkes County, died Wednesday evening, September 18, 2002, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She is survived by Robert E. Black, Jr., husband, of the home; son Lee Black and wife Tammy and son Dylan of Wilkesboro; son Mike Black of Cary; son Scot Black of Garner; daughter Cindy Black of Piney Creek; and son Matt Black and wife Pattie and son Bobby of Wilkesboro. She was a wonderful mother of five, and a loving wife for 45 years of marriage. She was a lover of music, reading, education, bass fishing, golf, NASCAR racing, NC State athletics, special friends and neighbors, and travel. She was fascinated by watching wildlife, from hummingbirds to alligators and all the critters around her rural home. A graveside service will be held at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Piney Creek at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, September 21st. Following the service, friends are invited to the home for refreshments and to celebrate Bette's life. MAINES Mrs. Bonnie Reeves Maines, age 88, of 123 Deerhaven Rd., Sparta, NC., died Monday morning, September 16, 2002, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Louise and Robert Dean Cleary of Sparta; and Virginia Brown of Conover, NC; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jr. and Helen Maines of Sparta, and Hoover and Saddie Maines of Piney Creek, NC; three grandchildren, Robin Roberts, Teresa Maines and Michael Maines; a great-grandchild, Chris Roberts; and a brother, Clarence Reeves of Conover, NC. He is survived by his wife, Kathern Reed Taylor of the home; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Grace Pruitt, Faye Hines, and Tina and Gene Hash, all of Sparta; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dan and Ulene Taylor of Laurel Springs, and Stuart and Myrtle Taylor of Sparta; and an aunt, Boyde Bryant of Laurel Springs. THOMPSON Mr. Alton Wayne Thompson, age 91, a former resident of Sparta, NC., died Sunday, September 15, 2002, at his residence in Eatonton, Ga. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ennice Osborne Thompson, and two brothers, Dr. C.A. Thompson and R.Cliff Thompson.
