FINNEY Mr. George T. Finney, age 92 of 3026 US Hwy. 221, Sparta, NC., died Monday, November 25, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clyde Brown Finney; and two grandsons, Robert Finney and Stanley Osborne. Mr. Finney was born in Alleghany County, July 28, 1910, to Joseph Thomas and Emma Rotenberry Finney. He was in the building construction business for more than 30 years. He was a fifty year member and past master of Piney Creek Masonic Lodge #432, past director of the Board of Elections of Alleghany County, past chairman of the Democratic Party of Alleghany County, past Treasurer of the Democratic Party of Alleghany County, served on AWARE Committee of Blue Ridge Electric Coop., and treasurer of Shiloh Cemetery Fund for 42 years. He is survived by a daughter, Katy Finney of Sparta; four sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Mary Finney, James and Sue Finney, Danny and Ella Mae Finney, all of Sparta, and Michael and Beverley Finney of Lenoir, NC; a sister, Emolene McKnight of Independence, Va; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, November 29, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home, and at other times at the homeplace. HINES Mr. Billy Franklin Hines, age 65 of 2132 Grandview Dr., Sparta, NC, died Monday, November 25, 2002 at Laurel Springs, NC. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Hines and a sister, Linda Hines McKnight. He is survived by his wife, Betty Halsey Hines of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Joy Hines of Sparta; his mother, Faye Taylor Hines of Sparta; and a niece and spouse, Tammy and Danny Webb of Hillsville, Va. Several aunts and uncles also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Cranberry Cemetery at Laurel Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his mother at 860 Grandview Dr. in Sparta.
CROUSE Mr. Howard Vance Crouse, age 85, of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida and Sparta, NC, died Monday, November 18, 2002, at the Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center in Florida. Mr. Crouse was born on December 16, 1916, in Sparta, NC. He spent most of his adult years in Miami, Florida, and returned to Sparta to live in 1990. He served in the Army horse drawn artillery in the 1930's and during WW11 in the Navy where he was involved in action in the Mediterranean and in Okinawa. After his discharge from military service, he settled in Miami where he worked as an electrician's foreman. He was a member of Flagami Baptist Church in Miami, and on moving to Sparta, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He was an active and giving servant of his church and community. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Walden Crouse, of the home; three sons, Michael Howard Crouse of Colorado, Donald Rex Crouse of Miami, Fla., and Henry Horace Godbee III of North Little Rock, Arkansas; two daughter, Debbie Poplin of New London, NC and Carolyn Jane Linihan of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Lucille McKeever of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Betty Spangler of Sparta; two brothers, Wayne Crouse of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Walter Crouse of Big Stone Gap, Va; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, November 23, 2002, at 1:00 p.m., at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Laurel Springs, NC., with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. at the church. The family will gather at the Church at 12:00 noon Saturday. AYERS Mr. Bill Harold Ayers, age 69, of 215 Hwy 221, Sparta, NC., died Monday, November 18, 2002, at his home. He is survived by two sons, David and Chris Ayers of Traphill, NC.; three sisters and brother-in-law, Amy Choate of Glade Valley, NC, Eva Jean Andrews, and Mabel and Frank Atwood, all of Sparta; and one grandchild, Hunter Ayers of Traphill. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, November 20, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, with Burial in Woodruff Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 1 until 2 p.m. in the chapel. The family will be at the home of Frank and Mabel Atwood in Sparta.
PENNY Mr. Allan George Penny, age 64, of 136 Fawn Lane, Roaring Gap, NC, died Sunday, November 17, 2002, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Eileen Reed Penny; a son, Scott Allan Penny of Syracuse, NY; a daughter, Deborah Penny of Winchester, MA; three brothers, Howard Penny of Asheville, NC, Roger Penny of Bethlehem, PA., and Robert Penny of Sugar Land, TX; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday evening, November 21st., at 7:00 p.m. at the High Meadows Country Club. McLAUGHLIN Mrs. Frances Pearson McLaughlin, age 90, of 1609 Memorial Park Drive, Sparta, NC, died Thursday, November 14, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Thomas Gillespi McLaughlin, and was preceded in death by a son, Tommy McLaughlin. Frances was born in Moravian Falls, May 18, 1912 to Bettie Belle Hix and Charles Shuford Pearson, Jr., she attended Woman's College in Greensboro, worked at the Wilkes Hosiery Mill and was an active member for many years in the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, the Musical Arts Club and the North Wilkesboro Woman's Club. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Fuzzy McKnight of Roaring Gap, NC; three granddaughters and spouses, Frances and Mike Olsen of Winston-Salem, NC; Ashley and Albert May of Raleigh, NC; and Catherine and Chris Tysor of Wake Forest, NC; two great-grandchildren, William and Rebecca Olsen of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Mrs. Louise P. Smith of Durham, NC. The family is very greatful for the devotion and care given to her by Lynn Brewer, Ruth Reed, Diana Choate, June Reeves, Bonnie Miller and Susie Bowlen. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday afternoon, November 17, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at the Moravian Falls Cemetery in Wilkes County. BRAUN Nancy Caudill Braun, age 64, of College Park, MD, died Wednesday, November 6th at Adventist Hospital in Maryland. She is survived by a son, Marc Braun of Baltimore, MD; a brother and sister-in-law, L.C. and Brenda Caudill of Catonsville, MD; two nephews, Linville and James Caudill of Catonsville; five aunts, Bernice Edwards, Dorothy Smith, Lorraine and Bill Crosby, Ruth and Bob Johnson, and Hazel and Page Wagoner all of Sparta, NC; and several cousins. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, November 12th, 2002, at 3:00 p.m. at Liberty Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Sparta. AYERS Mr. Roy B. Ayers, Sr., age 87, of 18 Rich Hill Rd., Glade Valley, NC., died Friday, November 8, 2002, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Wilson Ayers of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Junior and Lucy Ayers of Glade Valley; a daughter, Sylvia Carter of Elkin, NC; three sisters, Amy Choate of Glade Valley, Mabel and husband Frank Atwood, and Eva Jean Andrews of Sparta; a brother, Bill Ayers of Sparta; three grandchildren and spouses, Keith and Michelle Carter of Dobson, NC, Susie and Keith Hawkins of Hays, NC, and Kim and David Stanley of Elkin; three great-grandchildren, Victoria Carter, Corey Hawkins and Brooke Knott; and step-grandson, Shane Sexton. MORRISON Mr. Thomas Richard Morrison, age 87, of 299 Deer Haven Rd., died Friday, November 8, 2002 at his home in Sparta, NC. He is survived by his wife, Edith Fender Morrison of the home; a daughter, Judith Morrison Carr of Charlotte, NC; a son and daughter-in law, Charles and Connie Morrison of Statesville, NC; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; five sisters, Nellie Hoots of Roaring River, NC, Grace Anderson of Wilkesboro, NC, Mary Neil Covington, Edith Childress, and Reba Morrison all of Jefferson, NC. PORTER Mrs. Emogene Choate Porter, age 77, of Sparta, N.C., died Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, VA. She was the widow of Ted Porter. She is survived by four daughters, Joy Wagoner, Candis Sturgill and Janice Dancy all of Sparta, and Catherine Chappell of Wilkesboro, NC; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, November 9th., at 2:00 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Sparta, with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. She is survived by three sons, Ronnie Lane of Barber, NC, James Lane of Royal Retreat, VA, and Richard Lane of Stewart, VA; five daughters, Kathy and Robert Bare, Sherry and Jerald Perry of Sparta, Eva and Timothy Pennington of Laurel Springs, NC, and Eva Davis and Mary Treadway of Elkin, NC.; a son-in-law Bruce Chappell; one brother, Larry Heaps of Fawn Grove, MD.; three sisters, Elizabeth Powers of Manchester, MA, Peg Heaps of Glenrock, PA, and Norma Shelton of Fredricksburg, PA; a special friend, Donna Nuggett; and fifteen grandchildren. She is survived by her mother, Donna Rutherford King of the home; a sister, Crystal King of Raleigh, NC; maternal grandparents, Clifford and Lucille Rutherford of Ennice; paternal grandparents, Dan and Shirley Thomason of Galax, VA; paternal great-grandmother, Ether King, Pulaski, Va; and several cousins, aunts, uncles and a host of friends.
