ZIMMERMAN Mr. Maurice Otto (Zim) Zimmerman, age 86, of 228 Caudill Bend Road, Piney Creek, NC, died Monday, January 27, 2003, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, NC. He is survived by his wife, June Cox Zimmerman of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Maurine and Dennis Chesley of Berea, Ohio; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Sherry Zimmerman of Minnetonka, Minnesota, and David and Janet Zimmerman of Alexandria, Virginia; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, January 31, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. PRUITT Malissie Mae Mabe Pruitt, age 81, of Salisbury, NC, formerly of Sparta, NC, left this world to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 26, 2003, in Salisbury NC. Born on August 17, 1921, in Alleghany County NC, she was the daughter of the late Ruby Swan Phouts Mabe and Hillery Cleveland Mabe. She was educated in Alleghany Co. NC schools and was a graduate of Prathers Creek High School. She was retired from Mastercraft Pipes Inc., (formerly Dr. Grabow Pipes) Sparta, NC. She was a member of Laurel Glen Baptist Church, Sparta, NC. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pruitt was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Filmore Pruitt, and a brother, Joseph Solomon Mabe. Survivors include a daughter, Racine Pruitt Douglas; a son-in-law, Steven L. Douglas, Salisbury, NC; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 29th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. The Elder Bluferd Eldreth will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Tuesday evening at the Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Charles Joines, 1531 Memorial Park Dr., Sparta. Burial will follow in the Landmark Baptist Church Cemetery in the Whitehead Community near Sparta.
BILLINGS Mr. James Dan Billings, age 65, of 641 Rash Rd., Glade Valley, NC, died Thursday, January 23, 2003, at his home. He is survived by a son, Mike Billings of Clio, SC; a daughter, Sharon Billings of High Point, NC; a brother, Charlie Monroe Billings of Trinity, NC; five sisters, Mary Gordy of Buies Creek, NC, Stella Maude Clay of High Point, Villa Clay of Bonaire, Ga, Virginia H. Haithcock of Bennettsville, SC, and Anna Osborne of High Point, NC. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday afternoon, January 26th at 4:00 p.m. at the Sparta Cemetery. The family will gather at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
SIMPSON Mr. John Mack Simpson, age 69 of 614 I Street, N. Wilkesboro, passed away Friday morning, January 24, 2003, at his home. Born March 13, 1933, he was the son of the late Albert and Cynthia Finley Simpson. He is survived by his wife, Alma Sloop Simpson of the home; four sons, John R. Simpson of North Wilkesboro, NC, Bill Simpson of Brunswick, NC, Terry G. Simpson of Hickory, NC, and Jerry F. Simpson of Catawba, NC; one daughter, Linda Howellof Conover, NC; three brothers, Larry Simpson of Roanoke, Va., Charles Simpson of Roanoke, Va., and Jerry Simpson of Canton, Ohio; two sisters, Alice Washington of Sparta, NC, and Cynthia Simpson of Winston-Salem, NC; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, January 26th at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery, in the Twin Oaks Community, near Sparta. POOLE Mr. Eugene Jessie Poole, age 77, of 1040 Barrett Rd., Ennice, NC., died Saturday morning, January 18, 2003, a the Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Corrine Davis Poole. He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Leo Collins of Glade Valley, NC; several nieces and nephews; his father-in-law, Dorcie Davis of Colonial Heights, Va; a brother-in-law and spouse, Richard and Nancy Davis of Copperas Cove, Texas; two sisters-in-law and spouses, Lila Jean and Von Wilson of Galax, Va; and Janet and Doug Vaughn of Colonial Heights, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, January 20th at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Mt. Vale United Methodist Church Cemetery near Galax, Va. KILLON Elder R. Glenn Killon, age 97, of 2180 Saddle Mountain Church Rd., Ennice, NC, died Friday, January 10, 2003, at his home. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gertrude Norman Killon. He is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Jacqueline and Don Brooks of Baltimore, Md., Betty Higgins of Union Bridge, Md., Elizabeth and Claude Cleary of Ennice, NC, and Kay and Jerry Cox of Galax, Va.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Margaret Killon, Roger and Barbara Killon, and Johnn and Linda Killon, all of Ennice, NC, and Ray and Brenda Killon of Low Gap, NC; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, January 13th at 11:00 a.m. at the Old Saddle Mountain Baptist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. BROOKS Mr. Paul Samuel Brooks, age 77, of 1995 Mtn. View Rd., Glade Valley, NC, died Friday morning, January 10, 2003, at the VA Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Brooks; a sister, Fern Brooks; and a grandson, Donny Maines. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Evans Brooks of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Thomas Todd of Sparta; Terry and George Maines of Glade Valley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rocky and Peggy Brooks of Ronda, NC, and Ricky and Vickie Brooks of Glade Valley; three sisters, Ethel Chappell of Ennice, Edith Maines of State Road, NC, and Hazel Edwards of Glade Valley, NC; one brother, Don Brooks of Maryland; six grandchildren, Dawn Sutphin, Jeanna and Kelly Maines, Jamie Brooks, Chris and Colby Brooks; three step-grandchildren, Tom and Brad Todd, and Amy Haynes; and one great-great-granchild, Elle Sutphin. She is survived by a daughter, Vivian Lee Testerman of Florida; one brother, James A. Smith of Ducktown, TN; and six sisters, Janie Gore of Mouth of Wilson, VA, Marie Sexton of Perryman, MD, Amanda Jackson of Abingdon, MD, Shirley Paul of Sykesville, MD, JoAnn Jones of Bel Air, MD and Thelma Furches of Darlington, MD; and two grandchildren survive. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dorise and Austin Myers of Lexington; grandchildren, Hugh M. Myers and wife Debbie of Wilmington, and Terry J. Myers and wife Roslyn K. Of Lexington; and great-grandchildren, Candice Brooks Myers and Cody Austin Myers of Wilmington. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, January 8, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta with Burial in the New Salem Cemetery. Elder Earl Baker will officiate. The family will gather at the funeral home in Sparta at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday. BRYANT Mrs. Boyde Mabe Bryant, age 94, of 1267 Mountain Valley Rd., Laurel Springs, NC, died Saturday, January 4, 2003, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Johnnie Bryant. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cleo and Claude Roupe of Laurel Springs; a son and daughter-in-law, John Everett and Kay Bryant of Pulaski, Va; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, January 6, at 11:00 a.m. at the Pine Fork Baptist Church with Burial in the Cranberry Cemetery. Pastor Dean Adams will officiate. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. BROWN Mr. Walter Garland Brown, age 76, of Martinez, Georgia, formerly of Ashe County, NC, died Friday, January 3, 2003 in Augusta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Farye B. Brown; a sister, Dorothy Weaver; a half-brother, Vince Brown; and two half-sisters, Cashie B. Moore and Virginia B. Sturgill. He was born in Ashe County, August 16, 1926, to Walter William and Tincie Raynolds He was a retired carpenter with the E.I. Dupont Company at the Savannah River Plant in Jackson, South Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Maines Brown of the home; one son, Jerry B. Brown of Atlanta, Ga; one daughter, Debbie B. Hagood of Martinez, Ga; two step-daughters, Jean M. Blevins and Judy M. Brinegar of Sparta; four grandchildren, Tiffani L. and Renee E. Brown and Brandi H. Halliday and Nicholas A. Hagood; one great-grandchild, Nicholas Scott Halliday, Jr.; two brothers, Spencer Brown of Crumpler, NC, and Burl V. Brown of Piney Creek; and one sister, Logean B. Fox of Darlington, Md. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning, January 7, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Piney Creek. Rev. Fred Jennings, Rev.
