NORRIS Mr. Paul Thomas Norris, age 78, of 571 Deer Ridge Lane, Sparta, NC., died Saturday, February 15, 2003, at his home. Mr. Norris was born in Bladen County, NC., July 23, 1924, to the late James Preston and Kathy Carter Norris. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Navy. He retired as an electronic technician, and served as a lay minister in the corrections system for 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Hilda Sorger Norris of the home; a son, Thomas Wayne Norris of North Charleston, SC; two brothers, David P. Norris of Youngsville, NC, and Norwood E. Norris of Apex, NC; four sisters, Betty Jean Melvin of Garland, NC, Geneva Huddler of Fayetteville, NC, Mae Norris of Siler City, NC, and Annie Kate Peterson of Parkersburg, NC; and four grandchildren. A gravesite memorial services will be held Monday, March 3, 2003, at the National Cemetery in Salisbury with full military honors. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta, NC, is serving the Norris family.
MILLER Mrs. Opal Eldreth Miller, age 87, of 161 Kemp St., Sparta, NC., died Monday evening, February 24, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Floyd T. Miller. She is survived by a son, Ralph Eldreth of Liberty Hill, S.C.; two daughters, JoAnn Killingsworth of Caddo, Texas, and Bessie Sheets of N. Wilkesboro, NC; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Eldreth of Jefferson, NC; six sisters, Maxie Sheets of Laurel Springs, Mable Miller of Sparta, Marie Pennington of Jefferson, Winola Moore of Maryland, Bobbie Fender of SC, and Georgia Koontz of Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, February 27th., at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the funeral home.
HANDY Mrs. Betty Jo Gentry Handy, age 72, of 406 Glade Valley, Rd., Glade Valley, NC., died Thursday morning, February 13, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.W. Handy, her parents, Ralph C. and Bertrice Duncan Gentry, and a brother, Skipper Gentry. She is survived by three nephews and spouses, Daniel G. and Laura Gentry of Lewisville, NC, Steven C. and Kelly Gentry of Davidson, NC, and Thomas D. and Gay Gentry of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, February 15th at 2:00 p.m. at the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the Church. Jo requested that memorials be made to the Glade Valley Cemetery fund, or a charity of the donor's choice.
PARSONS Mr. Harold Dean (Pete) Parsons, age 60 of Piney Creek, NC., died Wednesday evening, February 12, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. He is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Stephanie and Tim Newman of Piney Creek, NC, and Megan Parsons of Walnut Cove, NC; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey Harold Parsons of High Point, NC, Mark and Ashley Parsons of Low Gap, NC,and Matthew Parsons of Walnut Cove; four Granddaughters, Ashley and Brooke Newman, and Rebecca and Katherine Parsons; three step-granddaughters, Crystal Caudell, Vickie Alford and Anita Jones; two step-great-grandchildren; and seven half brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning, February 15, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Carmel Church of the Brethren in Laurel Springs, NC with Burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. The family will be at their respective homes.
DAVIS Mr. John Davis, Jr., age 63 of Sparta, NC., died Tuesday evening, February 11, 2003, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Davis of Sparta; and a sister, Mary Ashby of Glade Valley. A graveside service will be conducted Friday morning, Februry 14th at 11:00 a.m. at the Sparta Cemetery. Friends may call at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening, and at other times at the home of Mary Ashby, 1032 Old Mill Rd., Glade Valley., at any time.
SIDDEN Mr. Calvin Clifton Sidden, age 76, of 125 Sidden Lane, Sparta, NC., died Tuesday afternoon, February 11, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Whitaker Sidden of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine and George Vaughn of Sparta, Melva and Carroll Gentry of Ennice, NC, and Bonnie and Ronald Warf of Millington, Tennessee; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Sandra Sidden of Sparta; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Oliver Sidden of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Laurel Glenn Baptist Church Cemetery.The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. this evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
TOLIVER Mr. Raymond Lee Toliver, age 77, of 905 Hwy. 18N., Sparta, NC., died Tuesday, February 11, 2003 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Patton Toliver of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Lee and Donna Massey Toliver of Granite Quarry, NC; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Larry Woodie of Sparta; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mildred and Winfrey Osborne of Davie, Fla.; Bernice Black of Bel Air, Md., and Avis and Earl Gross of Fayetteville, Ga; and six grandchildren, David Woodie and wife Bessie, Angela and husband Mike Parlier, and Candice, Ashley, Jessie and Mitchell Toliver. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. DUNCAN Mr. Lacy Alton Duncan, Sr., age 72, of 100 Duncan Lane, Sparta, NC., died Sunday morning, February 9, 2003, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Haynes Duncan of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Dwayne Burnette of Galax, Va., and Angie and Jim Hewitt of Travis Air Force Base, California; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Kimberly Duncan, Lacy Duncan, Jr., all of Sparta, Darrell Duncan of Rock Hill, SC, and Michael and Donna Duncan of Granite Falls, NC; one brother, Jay Duncan of High Point, NC.; and three grandchildren, Michael Duncan, Heather Burnette and Rebekah Hewitt. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon, February 13th at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Duncan Family Cemetery. COX Mrs. Annie Pugh Cox, age 108, of 6727 Hwy. 113, Piney Creek, NC., died Saturday, February 8, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the daughter of William F. And Laura Allison Pugh. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Cox. She is survived by a son, Paul Cox of the home; two nieces, Doris Lojean Brown of Brushnell, Florida, and Shirley Humbert of Piney Creek; and a special caregiver, Cathy Cook. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, February 11th at 2:00 p.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. EDWARDS Mrs. Jolene McClure Edwards, age 67, of 1710 Fraser Rd., Sparta, NC., died Monday morning, February 3, 2003, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Elder Dan Edwards of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Gary West of Laurel Springs, NC, and Patsy and Marty Bottomley of Sparta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan, Jr., and B.J. Edwards of Sparta, and Carlton and Diana Edwards of Ennice; her mother, Katherine McClure of Laurel Springs; a brother, John B. McClure of Schertz, Tx.; nine grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Magdalene Gulley Maynard of the home; a daughter, Marcia Maynard of Thurmond, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Rebecca Maynard of Elkin, NC; two granddaughters, Meredith and Miranda Maynard; two step-grandsons, Peter and Matthew Mariani; a sister, Jane Bowers of Harrisonburg, Va.; and a brother, Robert Maynard of Cary, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday evening, February 6th at 6:30 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Interment will be at a later date.
