She is survived by one son: David Edward Evans of Sparta; one daughter and son-in-law: Rose Marie and Willard Rector of Sparta; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the GRANDVIEW MEMORIAL CHAPEL with Burial in the Evans family Cemetery. BILLINGS Mr. Rex Junior Billings, age 71 of 4735 Highway 21 South, Sparta, N.C., died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at his home. He is survived by his wife: Barbara Lee Osborne Billings of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law: Ruby Crouse of Glade Valley, N.C., and Sandra Cornett of Elk Creek, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law: Rex Jr. and Karen Billings of Glade Valley and Larry and Kathy Billings of Ennice, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six sisters: Helen Haithcock of Bennettsville, S.C., Faye Elmore of Georgia, Anna Osborne and Estella Clay, both of Archdale, N.C., Mary Gordy of Buies Creek, N.C. and Betty Sue Mann of Winter Springs, Fla; two brothers: James Billings of Independence, Va., and Charlie Billings of Thomasville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the GRANDVIEW MEMORIAL CHAPEL with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. HIGGINS Mr. Will Rogers (Bill) Higgins, age 67, of 87 Edmonds Rd. Ennice, N.C., died Sunday afternoon, July 25, 1999, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, N.C. He is survived by his wife: Joyce Glasco Higgins of the home; one son and daughter-in-law: Randy and Kathy Higgins of Sparta; two grandchildren: Megan and Cory Higgins of Sparta; and two sisters: Barbara Miller and Bonnie Lineberry, both of Greensboro, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 P.M. at the Savannah United Methodist Church, with Burial in the Edmonds Community Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church Monday evening, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. ARMSTRONG Mrs. Rita Mildred Armstrong, age 81, of the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Independence, Va., died Saturday evening, July 24, 1999, in the Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Va. She is survived by a granddaughter and her spouse: Judi and Tommy Walls of Sparta, N.C., A great-granddaughter; Shylah Parson of Sparta, N.C., a great-grandson; Mathew Lyons of Sparta, N.C.; and two step-grandchildren: T.J. Walls of Sparta, and Cindy Walls of Fries, Va. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to the family for funeral expenses. HELTON Mrs. Minnie Beatrice Sturgill Helton, 78, of Sparta, N.C., died July 23, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, Va. Born September 7, 1920 in Stratford, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Eli and the late Ennice Spurlin. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James R. Sturgill, and beloved son, Jerry Ray Sturgill. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Archie G. Helton. She maintained her membership at Rush Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Saltville, Va. Surviving are one sister: Mrs. Mable Halsey of Ennice, N.C.; two daughters and a son-in-law: Gearldean Sturgill Wright of Martinsville, Va., Sandra Gayle and Michael Adams of Mechanicsville, Va.; three step-sons: Charles Helton, Paul Helton and Edward Helton; two step daughters; Myrtle Hart and Louella Kelly; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, July 26, 1999, at 11:00 a.m. at the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church in the Stratford Community of Sparta. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. BATEMAN Mr. Dewey Lee Bateman, age 47, of 65 Short St. North Wilkesboro, N.C., died Sunday evening, July 18, 1999, at the Wilkes Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro, N.C. He is survived by his wife: Linda Baldwin Bateman of the home; one daughter: Michelle Hash of Galax, Va.; eight grandchildren; his father: Ross Bateman of Laurel Springs, N.C.; one sister: Mary Mabe of Laurel Springs; two brothers: John Bateman of Sparta, N.C., and Terry Bateman of Laurel Springs; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the United Faith Church on Grandview Dr., in Sparta, with Burial in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. DOWELL Mr. Victor Edward Dowell, age 81, of 1056 Mahogany Rock Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Tuesday morning, July 13, 1999, at his home. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law: Peggy McCann of the home, and Barbara and George White of Laurel Springs, N.C.; four sons and three daughters-in-law: James and Sue Dowell, Roger and Wanda Dowell, and Billy and Bobbie Dowell, all of Sparta, and Junior Dowell of the home; one half-sister: Lojean Collins of Danville, Va.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a step brother: Coy Jones; and three step-sisters: Mamie Smith, and Ethel and Carrie Lee Anderson.
