DAVIS Mr. Bert Davis, age 84, of 732 Fraser Rd., Sparta, died Saturday afternoon, June 28, 2003, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia; a son-in-law, Jack Watson; and five brothers, Don, Clate, Carl, Kemp and Ray Davis. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Debbie Davis of Thurmond, NC; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Patricia and John Woodie of Statesville, Linda Watson of Jonesville, Connie and Dennis Andrews of Statesville, Caroline and Thomas Jennings, Jr., of Galax, Va, and Vicki and Lonnie McKinney of State Road; six grandchildren, Megan Jennings, Ryan Andrews, Travis and Mandy Welch, James Cook and Tesha Ashley; four great-grandchildren, Eden and Blake Ashley, Cassidy and Kyley Cook; a brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Thelma Davis of Sparta; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Grace and Plummer Van Hoy of Walkertown, Eula Smith of Walkertown, Lucille and John Blum of Rustburg, Va, Lorene and J.M. Sturgill of Sparta, and Betty and E.C. Hampton, of Walkertown; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning, July 1st, at 11:00 a.m. at the Whitehead Union Baptist Church with Burial to follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service to lie-in-state. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. SHAW Mrs. Nora Bedsaul Shaw, age 81, of 2219 Little Pine Rd., Ennice, NC, died Wednesday evening, June 26, 2003, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Charles Shaw of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles , Jr., and Sue Shaw of Sparta; two sisters, Oddie Edwards of Sparta and Helen Smith of Elizabeth, West Virginia; a brother, Carl Bedsaul of Dobson; two grandchildren, Laurie and Brett Baremor; two great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Alma Ruth Carpenter. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, June 27th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Glade Creek Union Baptist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 until 11:00 a.m. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Glade Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o Ted Hudson, 3489 Barrett Rd., Ennice, NC 28623. The family request no food be brought to the home. The immediate family will meet at the home of Charles Jr. and Sue Shaw at 2625 Mahogany Rock Rd., Sparta, following the service. RICHARDSON Miss Georgia Ruth Richardson age 75, of 3674 Pine Swamp Rd., Sparta, NC., died Tuesday rnorning, June 24, 2003, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jerry McMillan. She is survived by three sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline and Earl Baker, Muriel and Walton Joines, all of' Sparta, and Nellie and Lester Orsburn of Bel Air, Md; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Frank Richardson of Sparta, and Mack and Annie Marie Richardson of Shalotte, NC; a brother-in-law, Rayrmond McMillan of Sparta; several nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Vickie Duncan of Kannapolis. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon, June 26th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Landmark Baptist Church Cemetery in the Whitehead Community. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home and at other times at her home. EDWARDS Mrs. Ophra Bryan Edwards, age 86, of 5455 Hundley Rd., Winston- Salem, NC., and formerly of Alleghany County, died Friday morning, June 20, 2003, at the Elkin Healthcare Center in Elkin. She was the widow of John L. Edwards. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Eva Sue and Theodore Brandon of Winston-Salem, and Irene and Kenneth Bailey of Glenview, Illinois; three grandchildren, Nathan Bryan, Kenetta Bailey and Stephanie and husband Maurice Green; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Choate of Glade Valley; a brother, Jeff Bryan of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning, June 24th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church, with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the Church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home place at 1243 Macedonia Church Road in Sparta.

EDWARDS Mrs. Ruby Evans Edwards, age 92, of 395 E. Whitehead St., Sparta, NC., died Thursday evening, June 19, 2003 at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Kyle Edwards, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Jean Phipps. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Bill Blevins of Sparta; six grandchildren and spouses, Tommy and Peggy Phipps of Richmond, Va, Paula and Shane Doughman of Independence, Va, Pam and Allen Roberts of Independence, Va, Tammy and Buddy Marion of Sparta, Karena and Mike Caudill of Sparta, and Billy and Stephanie Blevins of Glade Valley; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, W.C. and Anne Evans of Clearwater, Florida. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, June 20 ., at 4:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Crab Creek Cemetery. The family will gather at the funeral home at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Crab Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o Jack Handy, 1602 Crab Creek Rd., Ennice, NC 28623.

HUDSON Mr. Fred Thomas Hudson, age 77, of 11817 NC Hwy 18 N., Ennice, NC., passed away Thursday morning, June 19, 2003 at his home. He was known to many people in Alleghany County. He provided a life time of unconditional love and support to family, friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters, his loving wife, Doris, and precious daughter, Joyce, and sweet daughter-in-law, Kathleen. He is survived by three sons, Ronnie of Ennice, Donnie and wife Joyce of Ennice, and Floyd of Mt. Airy; a daughter, Margaret and husband Garnett Cox of Roanoke, Va; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind many close family members and friends that will miss him. He was an inspiration to all that knew him. His life was a life of praise to Jesus Christ. He was a member of Pleasant Home Union Baptist Church and served as Deacon of the church for many years. The family would like to thank all the friends who have been such a blessing to Dad in the past months. Many thanks to the Alleghany Hospice Staff and special caregiver. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, June 21st, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial to follow at the Pleasant Home Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Elder Dale Greene and Harold Church will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Fred requests donations be made to: Pleasant Home Union Baptist Church, Hospice of Alleghany or the Glade Creek Fire Department.

ANDERS Mr. Wesley Clay Anders, age 74, of 619 Pine Brook Rd., Ennice, NC, died Saturday morning, June 14, 2003, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Murphy Anders of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Pat Anders of Ennice; two grandchildren, Jeffery and wife Wilma Anders of Ennice and Rhonda Anders of Ennice; five great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Bob Gillespie of Ennice, and Wilma and Howard Greene of Galax, Va; and special caregiver, Vince Bryant of Ennice. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, June 16th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Little Pine Church of the Brethren, with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. The family requests no food to be brought to the home. DUNCAN Dean Franklin Duncan, Jr.,76, of Mount Holly, N.C., died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital following a long illness. He was born November 24, 1926, in Shelby, N.C., the son of Dean F. Duncan and Emily Logan Duncan. He graduated from Glade Valley School and attended Charlotte College and Appalachian State University following service with the 11th Airborne in World War II. He worked in the fire protection industry for more than 40 years. He retired from Belk Store Services in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Bebe; two sons, Dean F. Duncan III, and Kyle M. Duncan; a brother, Hugh M. Duncan; a sister, Harriette E. Duncan; three grandsons; and one granddaughter. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at Glade Valley Presbyterian Church in Glade Valley, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Presbyterian Hospice, 1918 Randolph Road, Suite 50, Charlotte,NC 29204, or to the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery, c/o Jerry Laws, 73 Windswept Lane, Sparta, NC 28675.

HEARD Myrtle Elizabeth Truitt Heard, 80, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Alleghany County and wife of the late Frank Heard, died in the Hospice Center of Fort Myers, Fla., on Tuesday, June 3, 2003. She was born November 1, 1922, in Alleghany County to Everett and Myrtie Wolfe Truitt. She is survived by her first husband, Samuel J. Bonham II; two sons, James Truitt Bonhman and spouse Dianne of Fort Myers, Fla., and John Phillip Bonham and spouse Barbara of Marietta, Ga.; three grandsons, Blake, Kyle and Seth Bonham of Fort Myers, Fla.; two granddaughters, Randi and Racheal Bonham of Marietta, Ga.; a brother and spouse, Foster and Dorothy Truitt of Sparta; two sisters and spouses, Dorothy and Carl Miller of Tallmadge, Ohio, and Wanda and Oscar Gambill of Sparta; a sister-in-law, Marie Truitt of Sparta; several nieces; and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Myrtie Wolfe Truitt; a husband, Frank Heard; her eldest son, Samuel J. Bonham III; a brother, Parley Truitt; three sisters, Ann Truitt Gambill, Jane Truitt Fender, and Velma Ruth Truitt; and a nephew, David Truitt. After high school graduation, Beth spent a good part of her life in Ohio. She completed business training in Akron, Ohio. During World War II, she joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and was stationed in California. After the War, Beth decided to continue her education. She entered the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1946, and received a degree in the summer of 1950. In 1951 she married Samuel J. Bonham II of Ohio. They had three sons. She was predeceased by the eldest son, Samuel J.Bonham III. He was a staff member at the Ohio State School for the Blind. A graveside memorial service will be held at the Zion Cemetery on Highway 18 North, Sparta, on Saturday, June 14th, at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Stan McGraw will officiate. There will be a reception after the service in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church of Sparta. Anyone wishing to bring food may do so before the service. The family request that any memorial contributions be made to, Hope Hospice, 2430 Diplomat Parkway, Cape Coral, Fla. 33909, or the Zion Cemetery Fund, c/o Clinton McGrady, 4566 NC Hwy 18N., Sparta, NC, 28675., or the charity of the donor's choice.

DOUGHTON Miss Alice Brown Doughton, age 85, of 85 Poplar St., Sparta, NC, died Sunday morning, June 1, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by a cherished niece, Josephine Lane Gregory Thomas; a nephew-in-law, Dana L. Thomas, Sr.; two great-nephews, Dana L. Thomas, Jr. and Joseph David Thomas, both of Laurel, Md.; a nephew, David Doughton Gregory, Laurel, Md.; beloved cousins, Rita and John Woodruff and Angelia and John Miller, all of Sparta; and devoted caregiver and friend, Alice S. Washington. Ms. Doughton was the daughter of the late James Kemp Doughton, Sr., and the late Josephine Lane Brown Doughton and stepdaughter of the late Ivy Grace Doughton. A sunset service to celebrate Miss Doughton's life, the lives she touched and her sense of humor will be held in the Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery (Gregory plot, on the southwest side of the cemetery) and conducted by Father Chuck Blanck on Tuesday, June 3rd. at 7:00 p.m. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Doughton family.
