HIGGINS Mrs. Ila Murphy Higgins, age 94, of Ennice, NC, died Wednesday evening, July 30, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Hurst Higgins. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Junior and Wanda Higgins of Ennice; a granddaughter and husband, Louise and Wade Bullins of Ennice; a grandson and wife, David and Connie Higgins of Ennice; two great-grandsons, Matthew and Craig Bullins of Ennice; a step-granddaughter, Candice and husband Steve Reece of Ennice; a step-great-great-grandchild, Chloe Reece of Ennice; and a brother, Foster Murphy of Independence, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning, August 2nd, at 11:00 a.m. at the Saddle Mountain Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Mt. Vale Cemetery near Galax. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. MABE Mr. Dennis Ray Mabe, age 76, of 365 Rose Rd., Laurel Springs, NC., died Tuesday morning, July 29, 2003 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He is survived by his wife, Arlene Taylor Mabe of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Brice Waddell of Laurel Springs; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Mary Mabe of Laurel Springs; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Eunice Mabe Taylor of Peach Bottom, Pa; two brothers, Wiley E. Mabe of Havre de Grace, Md, and Wilmer Mabe of Bel Air, Md; and his mother-in-law, Fairie R. Taylor of Laurel Springs. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, July 31st at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Cranberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
REEVES Mr. Walter Lee Reeves, Jr., age 68 of 24 Squirrel Lane, Galax, Va., died Thursday morning, July 24, 2003, at his home. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Jeannie and Gene Crouse of Glade Valley, and Donna Dalton of Sparta; two sons, Stacey (Michelle) Reeves of Bonham, Tx, and Steven Reeves of Bristol, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Adam Dalton, Rochelle Daniel, Donna Garris and Rodney Crouse; two great-grandchildren, Amber Garris and Rayden Daniel; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Donna Moore of Georgetown, Tx, Jerralene and Ernest Murrell of Tarpley, Tx, and Margaret and Dan Patton of Galax; and two brothers, Bill Reeves and Glenn Keith Reeves, both of Lexington, NC. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 27th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Reeves Family Cemetery in the Twin Oaks Community. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Jeannie and Gene Crouse at 345 Brush Creek Road in Glade Valley. EASTRIDGE Mrs. Dorothy Richardson Eastridge, age 70, of 492 Little River Dr., Sparta, died Saturday morning, July 19, 2003, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Paul B. Eastridge of the home; two sons, Richard Paul Eastridge of Hickory, and Thomas Lee and wife, Elizabeth S. Eastridge of Dobson; two grandchildren, Thomas Lee, Jr., and wife Jami Eastridge of Dobson, and Nyomey Elizabeth Eastridge of Dobson; one great-grandchild, Katelyn Elizabeth Eastridge of Dobson; her mother, Lola Jones Richardson of Scottville; a sister, Mary Lee and husband John Grubb of Scottville; and two nephews, David and Gary Grubb. She was the granddaughter of Floyd Richardson. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, July 22nd. at 2:00 p.m. at the Pine Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Smith will officiate. PHIPPS Mrs. Carrie Wooten Phipps, age 91, of 208 Grayson St., Sparta, NC., died Monday morning, July 14, 2003, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Garnett Phipps, and was preceded in death by a son, Roscoe Phipps; a daughter, Patsy Wagoner; and three grandchildren, Dennis Phipps, Danson Phipps, and Robert Phipps. She is survived by two sons and daughters -in-law, Ronald G. and Dorothy Phipps, and Joe D. and Wilma Phipps, all of Newark, Delaware; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Gene S. Phipps of Toole, Utah; special caregivers, Edith Parsons, Gertha Alley, Barbie Church, Michelle Smith and all the folks at Sunbridge; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, July 17th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Cox's Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home, and at other times at the home place at 208 Grayson St. in Sparta. McGUIRE Mr. William Hardin A. "Bill" McGuire, age 78 of 40 Poplar St., Sparta, NC., died Saturday morning, July 12, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys McGuire Atwood, Treva McGuire Moretz and Grace McGuire Baites; and a brother, Clifford McGuire. He is survived by a sister, Edith McGuire Church of Boone, NC; and a brother, Wayne McGuire of Lenoir, NC. A graveside service will be held at Sparta Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 14th. The family will gather at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta at 12:30 p.m. on Monday.
HAMM Mrs. Edna Caudill Hamm, age 88, of 405 Rifle Range Rd., Sparta, N C., died Tuesday evening, July 8, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Arvie C. Hamm, and was preceded in death by a son, Arvie Smith Hamm. She is survived by five daughters and three sons-in-law, Mrs. Betty Wood of Glade Valley, Mrs. Fay Wagner of Sparta, Irene and Ralph Brown of Sparta, Ethel and Rev. Jerry Francis of Boomer, and Ann and Buster Cox of Independence, Va; four sons and daughters-in-law, Will and Polly Hamm of Sparta, Robert and Linda Hamm of Statesville, Welter and Virginia Hamm of Sparta, and Charlie and Carol Hamm of Roaring Gap; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Nora Quesenberry of Aberdeen, Maryland; special care givers, Pam Bourne, Mozell Savage and Betty Bennett; and several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning, July 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the Whitehead Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church just in time for the funeral services. REYNOLDS Elzie E. Reynolds, age 94, of Port Deposit, MD died Thursday July 3, 2003, at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace. Mr. Reynolds was a deacon at Landmark Primitive Baptist Church in Calvert until its closing. After the church closed, he attended Mount Carmel Primitive Baptist Church in Fountain Green, MD. He is survived by two sons, Delmas Reynolds of Milton, DE, and Paul Reynolds of O'Fallon, IL; two daughters, Doris Douglas of Port Deposit, MD and Jerolene Lee of Edgewood, MD; either grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Ethel M. Reynolds, who died in October of 2001. Services led by Elder Steven Bloyd will be held at 8 p.m. Monday July 7, 2003, at R.T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, P.A. 111 South Queen St., Rising Sun, MD 21911 where friends may call one hour prior. A service will also take place at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church in Sparta, NC at 2 p.m. Wednesday July 9, 2003 with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will be in Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
