CHOATE Mrs. Cora Reeves Choate, age 89, of 33 Hill St., Sparta, died Wednesday afternoon, October 29, 2003, at the Carolina Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. She was the widow of Winfred Decater Choate. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Winfred and Tony Woody of Charlotte; a grandson, Corey Woody of Wilmington; and a granddaughter, Kressilean Woody of Charlotte. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, November 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the White Plains Cemetery in the Twin Oaks Community. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. The family request that any memorial contributions be made to the White Plains Union Baptist Church, P.O. Box 413, Sparta, NC 28675.

HILBERT Mrs. Jean Naomi Hilbert, age 73, of 148 Bennett Lane, Glade Valley, NC., died Tuesday evening, October 28, 2003 at her residence. She was the widow of Harvey Hilbert. She is survived by a daughter, Susan E. Hammack and husband, Sandy, of Glade Valley; two grandchildren, Samantha and Seth Hammack; and a sister, Ellen DuMont of Tucson, Arizona. There will be no services. The family request that any memorial contributions be made to the Cherry Lane First Responders. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Hilbert family.

PRUITT Mrs. Boyd Long Pruitt, age 98, of 102 Grandview Dr., Sparta, NC, died Tuesday morning, October 28, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Fosco Pruitt, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Vivian Rhodes; a grandson, Don M. Carter; and a son-in-law, Clifford Church. She is survived by two daughters, Hazel P. Carter of Sparta, and Jonsie Church Flippen and husband Elder George Flippen of Elkin; five grandchildren, Brenda Johnson and special friend Dale Poole of Sparta, Diane Choate and husband Russell of Glade Valley, Debbie Davis and husband Larry of Laurel Springs, Elder Alan Church and wife Rhonda of West Jefferson, and Steve Rhodes and wife Diane of Morganton; a step-grandson, Tim Flippen of Mt. Airy; fourteen great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, October 30th at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Meadow Fork Cemetery at Laurel Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Meadow Fork Cemetery Fund, c/o Shirley Smith, 371 Early Rd., Ennice, NC 28623.

BENNETT Mr. Thurmond Gwin Bennett, Jr., age 64, of 529 Rivers Edge Rd., Sparta, NC., died Tuesday morning, October 28, 2003, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Chris Bennett of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Billy Howard of Sparta; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kevin and Ellen Bennett of Sparta, and Eric Bennett of Elkin; his mother, Ethelene Nichols Bennett of Sparta; two brothers, Walton Bennett of Sparta and Dennis Bennett of Glade Valley; and three grandchildren, Michael Bennett, Jennifer Pruitt and Julie Howard. A memorial service will be conducted Friday morning, October 31st. at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel . Rev. Thom Burleson and Dr. James Frazier will officiate. A military interment service will follow at the Sparta Cemetery, conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034. Thurmond requests was that memorials be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287, Sparta, NC 28675.

COX Mr. Clay Haywood Cox, 94, of 7874 Hwy. 221, Laurel Springs, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Cox was born in Alleghany County to the late Joseph and Alice Jones Cox on Sept. 11, 1909. He was a World War II veteran, serving 41/2 years. He served as a county commissioner and on the New River Mental Health Board for many years. He served on the Farm Bureau Board and was a longtime member of Mount Zion UMC, where he served on various committees. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Bush Cox of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Clay and Catherine Cox of Charleston, S.C.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, E. Paula Cox Fishman and husband Ted of Greensboro, Beth Cox Phipps and husband Lane of Mouth of Wilson, Va., and Alice Lee "Pinky" Cox of Butner; four grandchildren, Austin and Dustin Phipps and Melissa and Taylor Cox; a sister, Anna Lee Miller of West Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the Mount Zion UMC Cemetery. The Reverend Jerry Evans will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Grandview Funeral Home of Sparta. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to the Murdoch Center Chapel Campership Fund, P.O. Box 3000, Butner, NC 27509 or to a charity of one's choice.

CHOATE Mr. Elgin Roy Choate, age 84, of 281 Andrews Ridge Rd., Sparta, NC., died Tuesday morning, October 21, 2003 at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his parents, John T. and Ida Richardson Choate; and a brother Amon Choate. He is survived by his wife, Marie Brooks Choate of the home; a son, Keith Choate of Morganton, NC; four daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Jack Wagoner of Sparta, Bonnie and Calvin Zuber of China Spring, Texas, Sandra and Jody Towns of Maryville, Tn; Kaye and Ben Royall of Sparta; two grandchildren, Bretta Gardner of Ronda, NC, and Chad Billings of Lincolnton, NC; one great�grandchild, Cydnie Gardner; two step-grandchildren, Kevin Wagoner of Prescott, Arizona, and Stacy Hutchens of Muncie, Indiana; a step�great-grandchild, Paige Hutchens; two sisters, Zelma Kilby and husband Bill of Statesville, NC, and Opal Truitt of Glade Valley; and a sister-in-law, Naomi Choate of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon, October 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, the American Heart Association or the charity of the donors choice.

ROBERTS Mr. Clay William Roberts, age 90, of 1694 C.C. Camp Rd., Elkin, NC., and formerly of Alleghany County, died Sunday morning, October 19, 2003, in Elkin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hallie Mae Harris. He is survived by special nieces and nephews, Lorene Hart and Irene Mabe, both of Elkin; Glenna Mabe of Calabash, NC, and Claudie Roberts, Jerry Roberts, Joe Roberts and Elwood Roberts. Several other nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday morning, October 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

HUGHES Mr. Leo Franklin Hughes, age 75, of 3315 NC Hwy 18S., Sparta, died Sunday morning, October 19, 2003, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Hughes; and two sisters, Kathleen Hopkins and Callie Jean Summey. He is survived by his wife, Lula Hulin Hughes of the home; a son, Randy Lee Hughes of the home; a sister, Lalar Grubb and husband Coy of Thomasville, NC; two brothers, Colon Hughes and wife Grace, and Johnnie Hughes, all of Denton, NC. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family request no flowers and ask that memorial contributions be made to Grandview Memorial Funeral Home to help on funeral expenses.

WYATT Mr. David Houston Wyatt, age 58, of 3695 Walnut Branch Church Rd., Sparta, NC., died Friday evening, October 17, 2003, at the Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC., He was preceded in death by his parents, Houston and Maude Richardson Wyatt; a brother, Joe Wyatt; and two sisters, Cleo Howell and Annie Mae Taylor. He is survived by four brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Emma Lee Wyatt and Jim and Pat Wyatt, of Sparta, Rex and Ann Wyatt of Laurel Springs and John and Linda Wyatt, of Sparta; sveral nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Sherry Chastine. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning, October 21st at 11:00 a.m. at the New Hope Baptist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Diabetic Association.

MAINES Mrs. Maggie Irene Higgins Maines, age 76 of 74 Deer Lane, Sparta, NC., died Friday evening, October 17, 2003, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, NC. She was the widow of Arlie James Maines. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Jean Brewer and husband Greylin of North Wilkesboro; Carol Snyder and husband Don of Lexington, NC; and Barbara Ann Knight and husband Wayne of Traphill, NC; four sons, Bobby Maines and wife Judy of Glade Valley, NC, Don Maines and wife Brenda of Sparta, George Maines and wife Terry of Sparta, and Roger Maines and wife Mary of Sparta; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one half-sister, Treva Dale Smith of Ennice; and one step-sister, Opal Evans of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon , October 19 at 1:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Laurel Glen Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

COLLINS Mrs. Annie Blanche Pugh Collins, age 74, of 626 Peach Bottom Road, Laurel Springs, NC., died Friday morning, October 17, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of P.C. Collins, Jr., and was preceded in death by her parents, E.J. and Eva Pugh; and a sister, Eleanor Ruth Pugh Matthews. She was retired as postmaster of Laurel Springs Post Office. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and Eugene Smith of Sparta, and Susan Yarbrough of Laurel Springs; four grandchildren, Gary and Robert Smith of Sparta, and Collin Yarbrough of Raleigh and Karen Yarbrough of Wilmington, NC; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Hazel Pugh of Roaring Gap, NC; and a special friend, Robert Curtis Day of Laurel Springs. Several nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, October 19th at 3:00 p.m. at the Sparta United Methodist Church with Burial in the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family request no flowers or food. Memorials may be made to the Sparta United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 697, Sparta, NC 28675., or the E.J. Pugh Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1171, Sparta, NC 28675. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home place or the home of Charles and Hazel Pugh at 190 Ridge Rd., High Meadow Estates, Roaring Gap.

BILLINGS Mr. Brian Dean Billings, age 24, of 120 Hidden Pond Way, Glade Valley, NC., died Thursday evening, October 16, 2003, at his home. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Hash Billings. He is survived by his father, Charles Dean Billings of the home; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Darrin and Melanie Billings of Mt. Airy, NC, Rodney and Angela Billings of Glade Valley and Kevin Billings of Asheville, NC; one niece, Alisha Billings; and two nephews, Logan and Alex Billings. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday morning, October 18th at 11:00 a.m. at the Kennedy Cemetery in the Turkey Knob Community. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family request no flowers. Memorials may be made to the Kennedy Cemetery Fund, c/o Carol Kennedy, 647 Turkey Knob Rd., Sparta, NC 28675. CARVER Mrs. Kathleen Norton Carver, age 90, of 261 Pruitt Cove Rd., Laurel Springs, NC, died Wednesday morning, October 15, 2003, at her home. She was the widow of Lewis Hilton Carver. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Lynda Carver of Laurel Springs; and Randolph and Sharon Carver of Middleburg, Florida. No services are planned. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Carver family.

HUNT Mr. Wilmer Claude Hunt, age 84, of Laurel Springs, NC, died Friday, October 10, 2003, at Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson, NC. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Dalton Hunt of the home; four sons, Jerry Hunt of Laurel Springs, Mike Hunt of Roaring River, Johnny Hunt of Millers Creek, and Tommy Hunt of Sparta; two daughters, Rusty Darnell of West Jefferson and Mary Turnmire of Warrensville; a sister, Georgia Hunt of Jefferson; fourteen grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson with Burial in the Ebenezer Cemetery at Laurel Springs with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Sunday at Badger Funeral Home.

GREENE Mrs. Annie Caudill Greene, age 70, of 1906 Crab Creek Rd., Ennice, NC, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Elder Dale Greene of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ricky and Teresa Greene of Ennice, Randall and Amy Greene of Sparta, and J.D. Greene of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Josh and Emily Greene; two brothers and sisters-in-law, and Buddy and Carol Caudill of Sparta, and Mack and Sheila Caudill of Atlanta, Georgia. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, October 10th.at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Crab Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

MAINES Mr. Sam Edgar Maines, age 83 of 34 Kilby Rd., The Twin Oaks Community, Sparta, NC., died Sunday Morning, October 5, 2003, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. He is survived by his wife, Inez Edwards Maines of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Bobby Truitt of Glade Valley; a granddaughter and spouse, Karen and Donnie Dickens of Glade Valley; and two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Katelyn Dickens. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Grandview Funeral Home with the Rev.s' Fred Jennings, Eddie Foster and Hobert Dowell officiating. Interment will follow at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Monday, October 6, 2003 at Grandview Funeral Home and all other times at the residence. The family request that no food be brought to the home.
