THORNTON Mrs. Eva Sue Evans Thornton, 73, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, died Tuesday evening, December 30, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by her husband, Coy Wayne Thornton of Low Gap, NC; four daughters, Helen Louise Rabon of Gainsville, Georgia, Ruby Pauline Shirley and husband Lindsay of Randleman, Shirley Ann Halsey and husband Cecil of Randleman, and Linda Virginia Dumph of Sophia, NC; a son, Tommy Eugene Thornton and wife Rachel of Randleman; ten grandchildren, Tina Zonnenberg, Susan Carter, Daniel Davis, Lisa Beane, Ira Halsey, Jr., Rebecca Thornton, Kasey Thornton, Mindy Thornton, Christina Dumph and Joey Dumph; five great-grandchildren, Justin Beane, Jamie Halsey, Andy Carter, Kennedy Carter and Jakob Carter; three sisters, Viola Gaye Tilley of Winston-Salem, Minnie Lou Riling of Inverness, Florida , and Lillie Mae Halsey of Glade Valley; a brother, Clyde Evans of Sparta; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted 11 00 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at the Whitehead Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Whitehead - Joines Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church just in time for the funeral services. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery Fund.
EDWARDS Mrs. Lillie Crouse Edwards, 95, formerly of Alleghany County, died Sunday evening, December 28, 2003, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She was the widow of John Morris Edwards and Dillon M. Edwards and was preceded in death by her grandsons, Jerry Lee Fender, Randy Edwards and David Edwards; and her stepsons, Clifton Edwards, Harrell E. Edwards and Harlan (Buck) Edwards. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Kenneth Fender of Sparta; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Carole Edwards of Sparta, and Charles and Linda Edwards of Raleigh; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Odell and Elvira Crouse and Gwyn Crouse of Sparta; step-children Minnie E. Irwin of Sparta, Clive Edwards and wife Gelene of Sparta, and Betty E. Bledsoe of Laurel Springs; daughters-in-law Anne M. Edwards and Wilma B. Edwards of Sparta and Diane B. Edwards of Galax, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. The Rev. Fred E. Jennings and Elder Bobby Absher will officiate. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Home Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Dorothy and Kenneth Fender at 1067 Fender Road, Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Crab Creek Primitive Baptist Church, where she was a member for many years, c/o James Wyatt, 335 Laurel Glen Church Rd., Sparta, NC 28675; or the Pleasant Home Cemetery Fund, c/o Rex Todd, 1583 Pleasant Home Rd., Sparta, NC 28675.
BARKER Mrs. Reecie Walls Barker, age 88, of 179 Combs St., NC., died Wednesday evening, December 24, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of James Barker. She is survived by a special niece, Margie Clay of Glade Valley, and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial to follow in the Union Cemetery at Whitehead. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
LANE Mr. Billy Franklin Lane, age 44, of 2011 Grandview Dr., Sparta, died Wednesday afternoon, December 24, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Williams Lane; his mother, Mary Ann Brooks Lane; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wayne and Dana Williams. He is survived by a son, Christopher Ryan Lane of the home; his father, David Horace Lane of Laurel Springs; a sister, Linda Lane of Laurel Springs; a brother-in-law, Randy Williams and wife, Margaret, of Sparta; and a sister-in-law, Judy Brooks and husband Ernie of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Sunday, December 28th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the Williams home place at 386 Grayson St., in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
BROOKS Mrs. Beverly Mooney Brooks, age 88, of 192 Grayson St., Sparta, died Tuesday evening, December 23, 2003, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. She was the widow of Howard Brooks and was preceded in death by two sons, Delbert and Aubrey Brooks. She is survived by two sons, Bobby Brooks of Decatur, Alabama and Larry Brooks of Sparta; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Brooks Family Cemetery. The family will gather at the funeral home at 12:00 p.m. Saturday.
BUSIC Mrs. Doris Wagoner Busic, loving wife, mother and grandmother, age 79, of 685 Memorial Park Drive, Sparta, NC, died Wednesday morning, December 17, 2003, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was born in Alleghany County, May 23, 1924, to Benjamin Franklin and Claudia Mae Jones Wagoner. She was educated in the Alleghany County School System, and attended Draughn's Business College in Winston-Salem. She received her social work degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. She was director of the Alleghany County Department of Social Services for 37 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sparta. She is survived by her husband, Rodney Franklin Busic of the home; a daughter, Claudia Arton of Clemmons, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Sandra Busic of Sparta; four grandchildren, Jamie Blair Arton of Charlotte, Andrew Michael Arton Clemmons, Holly Corrine Busic and Emily Alexis Busic, both of Sparta; a sister, Vera Reed of Sparta; and special nieces Pat Miller and Norma Richardson, both of Sparta. Several other nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 20th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. Rev. John McCray will officiate The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. WIDENER Mrs. Linda Lee Phillips Widener, age 58, of 2639 NC Hwy 18 N., Sparta, died Friday morning, December 12, 2003 at her home. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Widener of the home; two children, Mark T. Handy and wife Sandra of Cape Coral, Florida and Belinda J. Luck and husband John P. of Sparta; a sister, Kathyanne Wilson of Albany, New York; two brothers, Ronald T. Phillips and wife Shirley of Albany, New York, and John L. Phillips of Albany New York; and four grandchildren, Joshua T. Widener, Michael E. Luck, Steven J. Luck and Jacob T. Handy. No services are planned. EVANS GWYN E. EVANS, age 83 years, of Dublin, Maryland, died on Saturday, December 6, 2003, at 1:31 a.m. at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, Maryland. He was the husband of Ima G. (Chappell) Evans who died on August 5, 2002. They had been married for 60 years at the time of her death. Mr. Evans was born in Ennice, North Carolina, on August 14, 1920, a son of the late Lester M. and Lilly (Tompkins) Evans. He moved to Maryland in the late 1930’s and has lived on his Dublin farm since 1961. He worked briefly at Bata Shoe Company in Belcamp, Maryland; Glenn L. Martin Company in Middle River, Maryland; and at several Bel Air area farms prior to becoming a civil service carpenter at Aberdeen Proving Ground where he retired after forty two years of service in 1978. His work at Aberdeen Proving Grounds was interrupted by WWII when he was drafted into the Army Corps 191st Ordinance Division and served in Australia, Japan, and the Philippines from 1942-1945. He is survived by three sons, Doyle J. Evans and Rodney G. Evans, both of Dublin, Maryland, and Roger G. Evans of Port Deposit, Maryland; seven grandsons, Michael Evans, John Evans, Ronald Evans, Jerry Evans, Steve Evans, Matthew Evans and Robert Evans; one granddaughter: Sheila Evans Lenane; two great grandsons, Tyler Lenane and Justin Evans; and two great granddaughters, Kimberly Evans and Jessica Evans. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Grover Evans, Ernest Evans, Bert Evans and Port Evans; sister Irene Evans; and infant great grandson Caleb Evans. Visitation with the family will be held on Monday, December 8, 2003, from 7-9 p.m. at Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Delta, Pennsylvania. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Regular Baptist Church in Glade Valley, North Carolina with visitation to be held one hour prior to the service. Elders Ralph Evans and Timothy Evans will officiate. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta, North Carolina will be assisting with these services.
PRESNELL Mrs. Hazel Rominger Presnell, age 82, of Glade Valley, died Friday evening, December 5, 2003, at the Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. She was the widow of John Rufus Presnell. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and James Miles of Glade Valley, and Barbara and Stewart McMeans of Jonesville; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Susan Presnell of Sparta; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one step-grandson. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 8th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta with Burial in the Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery near Roaring Gap. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Mt. Carmel Cemetery Fund, c/o Jimmy Gillespie, 7133 Glade Valley Rd., Ennice, NC 28623, or Hospice of Surry County, 1326 North Main St., Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family will be at the home of Judy and James Miles, 1188 Camp Cheerio Rd., Glade Valley.
