MYERS Mr. John F. Myers, age 91, of 14203 Hwy 18S. Laurel Springs, NC, died Tuesday morning, March 30, 2004, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Helen Doughton Myers. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Sue and Jim Dalton of Charlotte; a son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Sandra Myers, Laurel Springs; four grandchildren, Kelly Warden and husband Matthew of Winston-Salem, Katie Myers of Laurel Springs, John Dalton and wife Mary Ann, Jim Dalton and wife Barbie, all of Raleigh; one great-grandchild, Robert Dalton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 1st, at the Laurel Springs Baptist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. McKNIGHT Mr. Zane G. McKnight, age 72, of 1827 Mountain View Rd., Glade Valley, NC, died Monday morning, March 29, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. An infant son, a brother, Edwin McKnight and his parents, Sam and Eddie McKnight, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Jean Warden McKnight of the home; a daughter, Joy Grey McKnight of the home; two sisters, Lucille Irwin, Morene Blevins and her husband Bruce, all of Glade Valley; a brother, Andrew McKnight and his wife, Juanita, of Goldsboro, NC; sisters-in-law, Mabel McKnight and Pauline Jolly of Glade Valley; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Johnny Simons of Glade Valley. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 1st, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Piney Creek Methodist Cemetery. GREENE Mr. Harvie Gordon Greene, age 90, of 124 Old Greene Rd., Ennice, NC, died Monday morning, March 29, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mable Andrews Greene; two sons, Bobby and Tommy Greene and a brother, Garnie Greene. He is survived by two daughers, Annie G. Bryant of Ennice, and Wanda Pinion of Independence, Va; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Rector and Ruby Anders, both of Ennice; a special sister-in-law, Clyde Greene of Ennice; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31st, at the Little Pine Church of the Brethren. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. HOLBROOK Mrs. Marie Caudill Holbrook, age 93, of 39 Holbrook Way, Sparta, died Sunday evening, March 28, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by her husband, Colonel Holbrook of the home; a daughter and son-in- law, Dorene and Leo Caudill of Sparta; three grandchildren, Chad Ham of Sparta, Christy Tavakoli of Jonesville, and Lynn Caudill of Sparta; three great-grandchildren, Jasey, Nicolah and Lilly; two sisters, Erta Jordan of Sparta and Irene Proffit of Boomer; two nieces, Judy Shores Caudill of Woodstock, Georgia, and Jane Shores Stevens of Woodland Hills, California; and special caregivers, Pauline Johnson and Mary Seagraves. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31st, at Liberty Baptist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. CROUSE Margaret Doris Godbee Crouse, 85, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 21,2004,, in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. Margaret was born in Cecil, Georgia, and moved with her family to Miami, Florida, as a young girl. She attended Robert E. Lee Elementary School, Miami Edison High School, Miami Dade Junior College, and Florida Atlantic University, where she graduated with a degree in elementary education. She was the founder and principal of Flagami Baptist Kindergarten which during her tenure became the largest kindergarten in the Southern Baptist Convention. At retirement she was a teacher at Florida Christian Academy. Margaret and her late husband Howard Crouse spent their retirement years in Sparta, where they were active members of New Hope Baptist Church. They loved their home, their neighbors, their friends and church family here. Because of poor health, they moved to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, to be near their daughter in 2001. She is predeceased by her husband, Howard Vance Crouse, and is survived by her daughter and son-in-Iaw, Jane and John Linihan of Ft. Walton Beach; a son and daughter-in-law, Buster and Gloria Godbee of N. Little Rock, Arkansas; step-children Debbie Poplin and husband Larry of Albemarle, N.C., Michael Crouse and wife Karen of Columbine, Colorado, and Donald Crouse of Miami, Florida; a grandson Chad Godbee and wife Jama of Sherwood, Arkansas; granddaughters Stephanie Linihan of Atlanta, Georgia, Michele Womble and husband Joey of Novosibirsk, Siberia, Rebekah Steele and husband Damon of Sherwood, Arkansas, and Charity Wittenburg and husband Alex of N. Little Rock, Arkansas; step-grandchildren Sandy Crouse and husband Marshall, Jason Crouse, and Sabra Poplin; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Orabelle Sconyers and Betty Ann Graumlich and husband Donald; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Walden and Betty Spangler; and her many loving friends. ELIA Mr. Anthony Joseph Elia, 89, of 218 Valley Vista Road, Roaring Gap, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at his home. He was born Sept. 11, 1914, a son of the late Pasquale and Rosina Elia of Washington, Pa. He graduated from Washington High School in June 1938. He was a ham-radio operator from the age of 16, starting with a crystal set and Morse code. He continued as an avid ham-radio operator throughout his life, assisting in several emergencies. During World War II, he served as a liaison officer on board a ship in the Mediterranean. He was a department chief and retired from Western Electric (Lucent Technologies). He married the late Laura Pacilla Elia in June 1936. He was preceded in death by her and a 2-year-old son. His second wife, Roseanne Beaudoin Elia, and a brother, Benjamin A. Elia of Houston, Pa., also preceded him in death. Surviving are his sister, Mary Mersky and husband Louis of Latrobe, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18, in Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem
HAMPTON Mrs. Bessie Edwards Hampton, age 100, of 749 U.S. Hwy. 221 South, Sparta, died Monday evening, March 15, 2004, at her home. She was the widow of Ray Hampton and was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Chase Bugielski. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Helen Hampton, and Wade and Virginia Van Hampton all of Sparta; three grandchildren and spouses, Randy and Benita Hampton, David Hampton, and Robin and Jimmy Bugielski; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Charlie Edwards of Parkersburg, Pa.; and special caregivers, Dorothy Collins, Jettie Royal, Jean Blevins and Tracy Wagoner. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 18th, at Shiloh United Methodist Church with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. RUSSELL Carol Russell completed her spiritual journey on March 11, 2004, two months short of her 100th birthday. She was born to Charles and Mabel Hyatt Addington on June 3, 1904, in Ridgeville, IN, Her family moved to Garrett, IN, during her childhood and she completed her high school education there. Following high school, she attended business college in Fort Wayne and went to work for her father, who was managing a lumberyard in Adrian, Ml. She met her future husband, Lyle Russell, who was also an employee of the lumberyard. She then became a business partner of her father when he opened and operated his own business, a roofing and cement block company in Adrian. She was the office manager. She and Lyle married August 9, 1931, at the height of the Great Depression. Times were hard, but they saved diligently and built and paid for their first house before their first child arrived in 1941. Carol was active in school support groups while her children were young, in PTA and room mother activities. She also participated in several community service clubs. But the center of her work outside the home was the Methodist church wherever she happened to be living. with her husband, she was a founding member of the Homebuilders (Sunday school) Class at the Adrian First Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. Carol loved to sing, and was a choir member of every church she attended. She and her husband moved to North Carolina in 1962, initially to Statesville for his job, and then to the Sparta area, following retirement, where they built a home near the Blue Ridge Parkway. They eventually moving to Sparta in 1988. They were faithful members of Sparta United Methodist Church, where they sang in the choir and participated in many aspects of church and community life, making many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle, in 1994; and her sister, Chella, in 1998. From 1995 until her death, she resided at the Chelsea Retirement Community in Chelsea, Michigan, near her daughter and son-in-law. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyle (Stan) Towers of Ann Arbor, MI; her son, Barry (Colette) Russell of Deerfield Beach, FL; and several nieces and nephews in NC, OH, and AZ. Services will be Saturday, March 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Sparta United Methodist Church, with Burial to follow at Sparta Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, Sparta United Methodist Church, or a charity of one’s choice. FENDER Mrs. Gladys Dowell Fender, age 87, of 9874 Austin-Traphill Road, Traphill, NC, and formerly of Alleghany County, died Sunday evening, March 14, 2004, at the Wilkes Senior Village in North Wilkesboro. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Ellen Fender of Sparta, Robert and Rita Fender of Hollister, Florida, and Grayson and Rachel Fender of Traphill; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 17th, at the Whitehead Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery. POOLE Mrs. Blanche Goodman Poole, age 82, of 3500 U.S. Hwy. 21 North, Sparta, the Twin Oaks Community, died Thursday evening, March 11, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Williams. DICKENS Elder Donald Ray “Donnie” Dickens, age 38, of 3064 Shawtown Road, Glade Valley, NC, died Friday, March 5, 2004, in Montana. He was preceded in death by his father, Roe Dickens. He is survived by his wife, Karen Truitt Dickens of the home; a son, Nathaniel Dickens; and a daughter, Katelyn Dickens, both of the home; his mother, Evon Hendrix Dickens of Glade Valley; his aunt, Pearl Hendrix of Sparta; his father-in-law and his mother-in-law, Bobby and Wanda Truitt of Glade Valley; and by several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
