BEDSAUL Mrs. Kathy Triplett Bedsaul, age 54, of 6634 Glade Valley Road, Ennice, NC, died Thursday evening, May 27, 2004, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Dallas E. Bedsaul of the home; a son, Dwight Bedsaul of Jacksonville, Florida; three sisters, Treva Johnson of Jacksonville, Florida, Carrie Cornette of High Point, NC, and Sabrina Edgar of Hudson, NC; a brother, Travis Triplett of Boone, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30th, at the Mount Ephriam Baptist Church at Deep Gap in Watauga County with Burial in the Simmons Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
ANDERS Mr. Leonard McKinley Anders, age 71, of 1467 Collins Rd., Sparta, NC, died Thursday evening, May 27, 2004, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Hodge Anders. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Roger Hanes of Glade Valley; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Danny Anders and fiance, Erin McDonnell of Dallas, Texas; and Tim and Sara Anders, and James Anders, all of Charleston, SC; two grandchildren, Cristy and Joshua Ring of Glade Valley; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Gale and Emma Lee Anders, Larry and Nancy Anders, Tommy and Roxanne Anders, and Jimmy Anders, all of Independence, Va; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Marian Palacio of Sparta, Juanita and Olen Shaffer of Churchville, Maryland, and Hazel and Ted Wright of Independence, Va; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30th at the Full Gospel Church in Sparta with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the church. LAWSON Mrs. Jane Maines Lawson, age 95, of 30989 Blue Ridge Parkway, Glade Valley, NC, died Wednesday afternoon, May 26, 2004, at her home. She was the widow of Cyrus Lawson, and was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers. She was born in Alleghany County, March 14, 1909, to the late, Hiram C. and Sarah Jane Wolfe Maines. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 28th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta with Burial in the Mtn. View Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral services.
DOUGLAS Mr. Dewey Herbert Douglas, age 67 of 180 Ball Park Rd., Sparta, NC, died Monday morning, May 24, 2004, at his residence. A son, Greg Douglas, preceded him in death. He is survived by his companion, Viola Wood; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ira and Donna Douglas of Kernersville, Mark and Joy Douglas of Lewisville, and Jeff and Gina Douglas of Thomasville; seven grandchildren; his mother, Dema Rector of Sparta; a sister and brother-in-law, Louise and John Bateman of Sparta; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Dwayne Rector of Sparta, and Roy and Wanda Rector of Laurel Springs; a step-daughter, Ann Evans; six step-sons, Harold, Floyd, Wayne, Bill, Claude, and Earl Wood; and special grandchildren, Jordan Eppler and Hope Wood. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 25th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Antioch Primitive Baptist Cemetery in the Stratford Community.There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Anders of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Roger Hanes of Glade Valley; three sons and a daugher-in-law, Danny Anders and fiance, Erin McDonnell of Richland, Texas; Tim and Sara Anders and James Anders all of Charleston, South Carolina; two grandchildren, Cristy and Joshua Ring of Glade Valley; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Maxine Brinegar of Sparta, and Irene and Frank Jones of Glade Valley; a brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Patsy Hodge of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 23rd at the Full Gospel Church in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetey. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the church. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home is serving the Anders family.
SPURLIN Luther John Spurlin, age 64 of Sparta, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at his residence. He was born in Bel Air, MD, July 2, 1939, to Lonnie and Matilda Brannock Spurlin. He was a timber cutter and sawmiller. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Roark Spurlin of the home; godson, Andrew James Bryant of Laurel Springs; a sister, Helen Winnsette of Orlando, FL; two brothers, Clifton Spurlin of Pinnacle, NC and Golden Spurlin of Daytona Beach, FL; several nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Jean Brooks. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday at Grandview Memorial Chapel with the Elder Don Richardson and Reverend Graylen Blevins officiating. Burial will follow at Crab Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 S unday at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home.
ECKERT Mr. Walter Samuel Eckert, Jr., age 83, of 916 South Main Street, Sparta, died Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Grace Spivey Eckert of the home; two sisters, Vivian Hendrickson and Winifred Mathias of Pittman, New Jersey; a niece, Joann Ciccone and husband Ralph of Hayden Heights, New Jersey; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Troy and Grace Spivey, Eldridge and Jan Spivey of Portsmouth, Virginia, and Benjamin and Selma Lindsay of Williamsburg, Virginia; and his beloved canine friend, “Tie Tack”. A celebration of life service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 7th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Memorial contributions in honor of Walt may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
HOPPERS Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Wilson Hoppers, age 74, of Havre de Grace, Maryland, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at her home. She was the widow of Charles Webb Hoppers. She is survived by a daughter, Melba Smit of Aberdeen, Md; two sons, Charles L. Hoppers of Havre de Grace, Md, and Lawrence D. Hoppers, Sr., of Baltimore, Md; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and three sisters, Melba Davis of Cameron, NC, Alda Davis of Piedmont, SC, and Dorothy Musten of Kernersville, NC. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 8th at the Cranberry Cemetery at Laurel Springs. The Rev. Russell Mabe will officiate. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the local arrangements.
IRWIN Mr. John Elwood Irwin, age 75, of 3365 Hwy. 18 S., Sparta, died Sunday morning, May 2, 2004, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Anna Andrews Irwin of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Darryl Kennedy of Sparta, and Elizabeth and Craig Powers of Lancaster, S.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny Lee Irwin and Linda Kilby of Durham, NC, and Allen and Christina Irwin of Gaffney, SC, and Gregory and Ellen Irwin of Millers Creek, NC; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lona Osborne of Elkin, and Audrey and Wilmer Skinner of Johnson City, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 5th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. THOMPSON Mrs. Cassandra “Cassie” Shepherd Thompson, age 39, of 9199 Grayson Green Lane, Sherrills Ford, NC, died Saturday evening, May 1, 2004, in Catawba County, from injuries received in an automobile accident. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin Shepherd. She is survived by her husband, Denver Carson Thompson II of the home; two sons, Trey and Ryan Sutherland of Elk Creek, Va.; her mother, Earlene Houck Shepherd of Laurel Springs; a sister, Judy Crepps of Laurel Springs; a brother, Chip Shepherd of Sparta; and her paternal grandmother, Lessie Shepherd of Laurel Springs. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 5th at Bellview Baptist Church in Laurel Springs with Burial in the Cranberry Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 1 hour prior to the funeral services to lie in state.
