WINGLER Mrs. Viola Baldwin Wingler, age 87, of 2384 Topia Road, Piney Creek, died Saturday morning, July 24, 2004, at her home. She was the widow of Rob Wingler. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Mabel Stanley of Dobson; a brother, Willie Baldwin of State Road; a special niece, Elizabeth Ann Hicks; and her caregivers, Melanie, Lorene, Sally, Gay, Candie and Linda. Funeral services will be conducted 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 25th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. A private committal will follow at Mt. Carmel Church of the Brethren Cemetery in the Scottville Community. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
ANDREWS Mrs. Verna Brown Andrews, age 94, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, NC, died Wednesday morning, July 21, 2004, at SunBridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Paul Franklin Andrews. Verna was born in Alleghany County on April 5, 1910, to Floyd and Pearl Richardson Brown. She was a charter member and the oldest member of the Pine Swamp Union Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Naomi Slate of Mt. Airy and Helen Edwards and husband Russell of East Brunswick, New Jersey; six sons, Alton Andrews of Appling, Georgia, Clinton Andrews, Richard Andrews and wife Lexie all of Sparta; Arlon Andrews of Brewton, Alabama, David Andrews and wife Polly of North Wilkesboro, and Roger Andrews of Sparta; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lella Woodruff of Sparta; a brother, Dwayne Brown of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 24th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the New Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Clinton Andrews at, 17 Alleghany Manor Road, in Sparta. SMITH Mr. James D. “J.D.” Smith, age 78, of 9548 US Hwy. 21S, Glade Valley, the Cherry Lane Community, died Saturday morning, July 17, 2004 at his home. Mr. Smith was born April 15, 1926, in Alleghany County to Worth Smith and Bess Smith. He graduated from Sparta High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was involved in Iwo Jima in the Pacific. Mr. Smith worked for Chatham Manufacturing Company for over 40 years. He was a dedicated member of the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034, and active in the Antioch Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Louise Brooks Smith of the home; two sons, Jim Smith and wife, Debbie, of Sparta; Tom Smith and wife, Beth, of Twin Oaks; three grandchildren, Meagan, Hannah and Worth Smith all of Alleghany County; a sister, Frances Buckle and husband, Dan, of Twin Oaks; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 19th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Antioch Methodist Church Cemetery at Roaring Gap. The Rev. Gary Elrod and the Rev. Robert Waddell will officiate. The Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034 will conduct military rites. UPCHURCH Mrs. Dorothy Vernon “Dot” Upchurch, age 83, of 167 Douglas Town Road, State Road, NC, and formerly of Laurel Springs, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at her residence. She was the widow of George Robert Upchurch, and was preceded in death by brothers, Paul, Bill and Cleo Vernon, and a sister, Kate Osborne. Dot was born in Guilford County, on February 7, 1921 to the late, Pete and Ella Rhodes Vernon. She was retired from Troutman Industries and was a member of the Laurel Springs Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Hamby of State Road; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carol Upchurch of Sparta; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Laymon Vernon of Summerfield; and two sisters, Clarice Osborne of Summerfield and Bessie White of Walkertown. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 15, at the Laurel Springs Baptist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. TAYLOR Mrs. Judy Evans Taylor, age 62, of 11130 Hwy 18S, Laurel Springs, NC, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at her home.She was the widow of Dean Taylor. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Mark Lewis of West Jefferson; a step-daughter, Deanna Dixon and husband Gene of Sparta; a grandson, Nathan Lewis of West Jefferson, two step grandchildren, Linea and Shannon; a brother, Bill Evans of China Grove; four sisters, Sharon Cooper of Anderson, Indiana, Gaile Ritter of Gibsonville, Carol Wheeler of Laurel Springs and Betty Wyatt of Sparta; and a special caregiver, Alfojean Brooks. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 14th at 1:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. WADDELL Mrs. Lucy Reeves Waddell, age 95, of 732 Old County Line Road, Laurel Springs, NC, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at her home. She was the widow of Vince Waddell. She is survied by a daughter, Mary Sue Davis of Winston-Salem; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard R. and Jean Waddell of Laurel Springs, NC; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. “Miss Lucy” was born in the Nathans Creek Community of Ashe County, on October 22, 1908, to the late, John A. and Betty Miller Reeves. She was educated in the Ashe County School System, graduating from Jefferson High School in 1926. She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1930. She taught school in the Ashe and Alleghany School System from 1930 until 1974, when she retired. She was a member of the Alleghany County Retired School Personnel, the National Education Association, North Carolina Retired School Personnel, District of North Carolina Retired Personnel and the North Carolina Association of Educators. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at the Cranberry Cemetery at Laurel Springs. The Elder Bobby Absher and the Rev. Reeves Jones will officiate. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Alleghany County Education Foundation, 85 Peachtree St., Sparta, NC 28675. WYATT Mr. Rex Garfield Wyatt, age 72, of 10971 Glade Valley Road, Ennice, NC, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at the Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Va. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Edwards Wyatt of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rickey and Kathy Wyatt of Wilmington, Del., and Michael and Suzanne Wyatt of Middletown, Del; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Ernest Hall of Wilmington, Del; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Rydlewski, Christopher Steele, Stephanie Steele, Michael Wyatt II, Sarah Miller, Carolyn Miller and Rachel Miller, all of Delaware; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Absher of Sparta and Sue Church of N. Wilkesboro; a brother, Vaughn Wyatt of Sparta; nine half-sisters, Jean Stephenson, Goldia Childress, Shirley Thompson, Brenda Cole, Linda Hill, Lucille Call, Betty Johnson, Kathy Call and Mary Owensby; two half-brothers, Jim Royal and Tim Royal; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10th at the Savannah United Methodist Church with Burial in the Edmonds Community Cemetery.
