HODGE Mr. Floyd Junior Hodge, age 48, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, NC, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004, in Sparta. He is survived by two sisters, Wilma Roark and Margaret Taylor, both of Sparta; and three brothers, Roger Dale Hodge of Sparta, Ronnie Gene Hodge of Baywood, Va., and Raymond Lee Hodge of Penhook, Va. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 1st at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery at Independence, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Thursday evening.
SHAW Mrs. Mildred Boyer Warden Shaw, age 83, of 203 Warden Road, Sparta, NC, died Tuesday morning, September 28, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. Her first husband, George L. Warden and three sisters preceded her in death. Mildred was born in Buchanan, Virginia on July 31, 1921. She was a faithful member of Osborne Memorial Baptist Church, and was retired from Sparta Industries. Mildred loved her church, her pastor and she loved flowers of any kind. She is survived by her husband, Robert G. Shaw of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy Sue and Ralph Poole of Hillsville, Va, and Joyce Gann of Pinnacle; two grandchildren, Lynn Wilson of Atlanta, Ga., and Michael Gann of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, Carter and Sydney Wilson; and a sister, Nellie Manspile of Buchanan, Va. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 30th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Elk Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. ESTEP Mr. Woodrow Harold Estep, age 79, of 1058 South Main St, Sparta, died Monday morning, September 20, 2004, at his home. Woodrow was born October 12, 1924 in Alleghany County, North Carolina. He was a World War II Veteran, Mailman Second Class, honorably discharged from the United States Navy on December 10, 1947. Current events, politics, history and geology were of great interest to him. He was a life long Democrat, keeping up with the politics of the day, even when he did not feel well. He loved to read, fish, garden, and visit with family and friends, teaching his children and grandchildren the value of a sound education, instilled in them a love of learning. His strong Baptist faith comforted him through many years of illness. Woodrow was appointed Magistrate of Alleghany County, North Carolina, in January 1970. He retired in December of 1986. He is survived by his wife, Rose Estep; two daughters, Alice Estep and Mary Crouse; two grandchildren, Scott Crouse and April Finney and husband Brian; a great-granddaughter, Breanna Finney; five sisters, Elsie Collins, Velma Vaughn, Agnes Joines and husband Ernest, Viola Church, Thelma Dills and husband Elmer; a brother, John Alvin Estep and wife Jo; a sister-in-law, Maxine Estep; and his little best friend, his dog, Fritz. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 24th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Antioch Cemetery, in the Stratford Community. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral Home. CHOATE Mrs. Lucy Absher Choate, age 96, of 1423 Bledsoe Creek Rd., Sparta, NC, died Saturday evening, September 18, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Arol Choate. She is survived by a daughter, Delano Choate of the home; a sister, Rousie Byrd of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 21st at the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church with Burial to follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. CAUDILL Mr. Haywood Caudill, age 79, of 22 Perry Lane, Laurel Springs, NC, died Friday, September 17 2004, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is survived by a brother, Henry Caudill of the home. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 20th at the Landmark Baptist Church . The family will gather at the church at 1:00 p.m. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the family to help on funeral expenses. BUSIC Miss Nannie Lou Busic, age 92, of 601 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC, died Sunday morning, September 12, 2004, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Nannie was born in Piney Creek, NC, February 14, 1912, to the late James Franklin Busic and Dora Parsons Busic. She retired from Union Carbide, and was a member of the Balfour Baptist Church in Asheboro. She is survived by a sister, Edith Richardson of Sparta; a brother, Rodney Busic of Sparta; several nieces and nephews; and special caregivers, Marie Lyles, Shirley McCoin, Wilda Long, Nancy Snow, Becky Snow and Hazel Cheek. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 13th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta, NC; Burial will follow in the Piney Creek United Methodist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
SANDERS Mrs. Bessie Shores Sanders, age 89, of 1681 U.S. Highway 21 North, Sparta, died Saturday evening September 11, 2004, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Robert Earl Sanders. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Bill Busic of Piney Creek; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jerry and Sandy Sanders of Bangor, Maine, and Lloyd Sanders of Rosemond, California; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 14th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral Home. The family will be at the home of Wanda and Bill Busic at 1037 Piney Creek School Road, at Piney Creek.
SHAW Mr. Charles Franklin Shaw, Sr., age 81, of 2219 Little Pine Road, Ennice, NC, died Wednesday evening, September 8, 2004 at Sunbridge of Alleghany. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Bedsaul Shaw. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Jr., and Sue Shaw of Sparta; two grandchildren, Laurie Baremor, Brett Baremor and wife Deana; and two great-grandchildren, Chasey and Meghan. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 11th at the Glade Creek Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the church. MOXLEY Mrs. Jewell Gaye Johnson Moxley, age 69, of 85 Poplar St., Sparta, died Friday morning, September 3, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Wayne Wood of Boomer, NC, and Sandra and Ronnie Sidden of Kernersville, NC; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James and Theresa Willey, Joe and Kelly Willey, and Jerel Willey, all of Sparta; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Reba Vaughn and Emma Lee Johnson Edwards of Ennice; two brothers, Billy Carroll Johnson and Boyd Reeves Johnson, both of Ennice; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 6th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Glade Creek Cemetery.
