MURPHY Mr. Click Columbus Murphy, 86, of 59 Murphy St., Sparta, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 23, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Handy and Buster Murphy; and a sister, Nellie Johnson. Mr. Murphy was born April 20, 1918, to the late A.R. and Emmaline Tompkins Murphy. He was a former Alleghany County deputy, an associate of Choate Motor Co. in Sparta for many years, and an avid golfer. He loved to hunt, especially for pheasant, and was a member of the Little Pine Church of the Brethren. He is survived by his wife, Ola Mae Phipps Murphy of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and Dr. Bob Brice of Winston-Salem; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dwayne and Janie Murphy of Independence, Va., Wade and Patsy Murphy of Roaring Gap and Chris and Kathy Murphy of Sparta; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Jeanette Anders and Cecil and Underwood Medley, all of Ennice; a stepdaughter, Mary Collins and husband Jeff of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at the Little Pine Church of the Brethren with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to funeral services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening, Nov. 25, at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

BILLINGS Mrs. Susan McCarthy Billings, age 40, of 57 Homestead Way, Glade Valley, died Monday, November 22, 2004, from injuries received in an automobile accident in Wilkes County. She is survived by her husband, Tommy Billings of the home; four children, Timothy Mimbs of Sparta; Candice Lee Mimbs of Glade Valley; and Alyssa Caswell Mimbs and Charles Kevin Mimbs, both of Sparta; her parents, Tim and Jane McCarthy of Glade Valley; a sister, Dawn Nichols and husband Kenneth, and their daughter, Sarah; and two step-daughters, Lindsey Megan Billings of Elkin and Morgan Grace Billings of the home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 26th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Cherry Lane Cemetery at Glade Valley. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Sparta.

ROSE Mr. Thomas Allen Rose, age 66, of 51 Oak Park Lane, Sparta, died Sunday morning, November 21, 2004, at Sunbridge of Alleghany in Sparta. He was the son of the late Roy Rose and Cleo Church Rose, and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Taylor Rose. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Jerry Drum of Hickory; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve and Sherry Rose of Sparta, and Gerald Allen Rose of Sparta; three grandchildren, Amber Nicole Rose, Autum Noel Rose and Hunter Wayne Drum; two brothers and a sister-in-law, John Everett and Virginia Rose of Laurel Springs, and Roger Lee Rose of Wilkesboro; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Madeline M. Blackburn of Churchville, Md., Imogene and Stanley Mahan of Aberdeen, Md., Doris and Willard Jennings of Churchville, Md., and Linda and Larry Pruitt of Laurel Springs; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon Tuesday, November 23, 2004, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Cranberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of Steve and Sherry Rose at 358 Mahogany Rock Road in Sparta.

JOHNSON Mrs. Laura Jones Johnson, age 54, of 7737 Glade Valley Road, Ennice, NC., died Saturday, November 20, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by her husband, Mack Johnson of the home; a daughter, Angela Wilkerson and husband Michael of Rock Hill, S.C.; a son, Brad Harmon and wife, Christy of North Wilkesboro; her mother, Eula Tester of Boone, NC; a brother, Jerry Jones and wife Sue of Boone; a step-daughter, Renee Bedsaul and husband Sam of Raleigh, NC; a step-son, Robbie Johnson and wife Janet of Mt. Airy; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 22nd at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta with Burial in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery. The family will receive friend one hour prior to the funeral services at the funeral home.

POOLE Mr. James Lester Poole, age 76, of 280 Deer Haven Road, Sparta, died Friday evening, November 19, 2004, at his residence. He was the son of the late David and Maggie Richardson Poole and was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Andrews and Ethel Smith. He is survived by his wife, Betty Sue Chappell Poole of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Tony Adams, Mitzi and Brady Proffit, all of Sparta; five grandchildren and spouses, Nicole and Willie Pruitt of Ennice, Misty and Tommy McKnight of Sparta, Mitchell and Gari Leigh Adams of Pilot Mountain, Matthew and Amanda Adams of Mt. Airy, and Seth and Jill Proffit of Glade Valley; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Lucy Royall of Roaring Gap, and Virginia Hash of Sparta; his mother-in-law, Ethel Chappell of Ennice; a brother-in-law, Joe Andrews of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 21st at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted at the funeral home by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. BLEVINS Mr. Jessie Welter Blevins, age 96, of 700 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC, died Tuesday morning, November 16, 2004, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Richardson Blevins; and brothers Curtis, Woodrow and Dempsey Blevins. He was born in Alleghany County on July 14, 1908 to the late, George and Lucy Ann Watson Blevins. He was a retired farmer from the Klondike Farms in Elkin, and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Elkin. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Blevins of the home; and a sister, Pauline Church of Sparta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 17th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Cranberry Cemetery at Laurel Springs.The Rev. John Attaway will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his sister, Pauline Church, 229 Westview Drive in Sparta.

RANDALL Jordan Scott Randall, age 28, of 1199 Memorial Park Drive, Sparta, died Saturday, November 6, 2004, at the V.A. Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was honorable discharged from the U.S. Navy, stationed at Coronado, California, and was a student at East Tennessee State University. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Gilbert of Durham; his father, Nathan Scott Randall of Deep Gap, NC; his maternal grandmother, Gretchen Bloodworth of Sparta; his paternal grandmother, Anna Lee Miller of Deep Gap; his step-father, Mitchell Gilbert of Hickory; step-mother, Ann Randall of Deep Gap; half-brothers, Justin and Bryan Randall; step-brother, Jonathan Morris; and step-sister, Christa Kelly. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034.

WARF Mrs. Linda Todd Warf, age 46, of 36 Hudson Road, Sparta, died Saturday morning, November 6, 2006, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She is survived by her husband, Rickie Lloyd Warf, of the home; two sons, Danny Rector of Ennice, and Darrell Reed and wife Mary of Ennice; her mother, Emalene Spurlin Todd of Ennice; her father, Herbert Todd of Independence, Va; a brother, Randy Todd and wife Joy of Ararat, NC; a sister, Elizabeth Todd of Ennice; and two special nephews, Shawn Todd and Shannon Todd, both of Ennice. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 8th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the H.B. Spurlin Memorial Gardens at Ennice. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her mother at 9209 Hwy. 18N, Ennice.

THORNTON Mrs. Minnie Evans Thornton, age 94, of 179 Combs Street, Sparta, died Tuesday evening, November 2, 2004, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Bays Thornton, and was preceded in death by her parents, Elder John and Della Evans, and a brother Bert Evans. She is survived by two daughters, Edna Osborne and Margaret Ammons, both of Sparta; a son, John Frank McMillan of Piney Creek; a sister, Grace Choate of Sparta; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 4th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery at Whitehead. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. this evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. The family will be at the home of Edna Osborne at Apartment 5B Ridge View Apartments.

PENNINGTON Mrs. Ruth Sheets Church Pennington, age 89, of Jefferson, died Monday, November 1, 2004, at the Segraves Care Center in Jefferson. Survivors in the area are two sisters-in-law, Rose Dolinger of Sparta and Viola Church of Laurel Springs. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 7th at Badger Funeral Home with Burial in the Double Springs Cemetery at Laurel Springs. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
