BROWN Mr. Edward Francis Brown, age 75, of 349 Sparks Hill, Sparta, N.C., died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Frieda Fay Brown, of the home. Mr. Brown was born in Springfield, Mass., Feb. 20, 1924, to the late Edward F. Brown, Sr., and Helen Brown. He was a retired bank officer, and had lived in Alleghany County since 1975. He was a member of the VFW, the local police benevolent society, the Elks Lodge in Florida, and other civic organizations. There will be no visitation or funeral service. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Brown family. FENDER Mr. William Bryan Fender, age 42, of 1388 Fender Mountain Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Wednesday evening, Sept. 22, 1999, at his home. He is survived by one brother: Roland Fender of Rockledge, Florida. Several cousins and friends also survive. A graveside service will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
HARRIS Mrs. Marie UpChurch Harris, age 85, of 2496 Thurmond Road, Thurmond, N.C., died Friday morning, Sept. 17, 1999, in the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was the widow of Rhea Neal Harris. She is survived by two sons: Billy Neal Harris and Bobby Neal Harris, both of Thurmond; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four sisters: Mattileen Vickerman of Laurel Springs, N.C., Elanor Harding of Baltimore, Maryland, Doris Nance of Burlington, N.C., and Christine Petty of Greensboro, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. LANDRETH Mrs. Wanda Blevins Landreth, age 72, of 300 Grayson St., Sparta, N.C., died Thursday, September 16, 1999, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, N.C. She was the widow of James Maynard Landreth, Sr. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law: Jodi and Ricky Jones of Glade Valley, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Walter V. and Susan Landreth of Sparta; six grandchildren: Walter Landreth, Jr., Tina Landreth, Jake Landreth, Michael Landreth, Chelsea Jones and Devin Jones; two great-grandchildren: Cameron Landreth and Allison Taylor Landreth; one step-grandson: Matthew Hessey; two sisters: Tressie Hudson of Ennice, N.C., and Allene Gentry of Sparta, and special friends: Laurene Warden, Gertha Alley and Karen McGrady. RUTHERFORD Mrs. Mae Scott Rutherford, age 80, of 7286 Highway 113, Piney Creek, N.C., died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, N.C. She was the widow of Zack Rutherford. BILLINGS Mr. John Paige Billings, age 73, of 4365 Spicer Mountain Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Monday morning, Sept. 13, 1999, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife: Georgia Dowell Billings of the home; three daughters and a son-in-law: Betty and Page Adams, and Linda Edwards and Ellen Billings, all of Sparta; one son and daughter-in-law: Danny and Carolyn Billings of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two grandsons and a spouse: Kurt and Angella Jordan of East Bend, N.C., and Allen Edwards of Sparta; two granddaughters and a spouse: Tina and Greg Brown of Sparta and Hallie Jean Billings of Laurel Springs, N.C.; four great-grandchildren: Jonathan and Jason Jordan, and Gloria and Monica Santos; and special friends: Carolyn Dickens and Lisa Hodge. DOUGLAS Mrs. Laura Irwin Douglas, age 94, of 494 Bledsoe Creek Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Saturday, September 11, 1999, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She is survived by a daughter: Naoma Choate of Sparta, N.C.; one granddaughter and spouse: Sharon and Billy Benson of Wilkesboro, N.C.; one grandson: Brian Alan Choate of Sparta; and one great-grandson: Matthew Choate of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Little River Primitive Baptist Church with Burial in the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie in state. She is survived by a daughter: Nancy Mize of Lynchburg, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law: Roy and Norma Cox of Sparta; one sister; Margaret Carr of Baywood, Va.; five grandchildren and spouses: Douglas and Tancie Mize of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Richard and Joanna Mize of Spartanburg, S.C., Renee' and Andy Bottum of Albany, New York, Michelle Cox and Bob Renta of Bristol, Connecticut, and Stephen Cox of Chesapeak, Va.; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. JOINES Mrs. Boyde Cleary Joines, age 88, of 200 E. Whitehead St. Sparta, N.C., died Friday morning September 10, 1999, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Earl Joines. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Charles and Annie Joines of Sparta and Gary and Martha Joines of Lititz, Pa; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and one brother: Ivan Cleary of Havre de Grace, Md. .Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Whitehead Joines Cemetery. MOXLEY Mr. William Clay (Bill) Moxley, Sr., age 57, of 85 Poplar St., Sparta, N.C., died Friday, Sept. 4, 1999, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. He is survived by a daughter: Karen Moxley Brown of Galax, Va.; a son: William Clay (Billy) Moxley, Jr., of Sparta; a granddaughter: Ashley Brown of Galax, Va.; four sisters: Nona Pilkins of Galax, Va., Leona Dowell and Myrtle Halsey, both of Sparta, and Jean Murray of Carolina Beach, N.C.; a step-son: James Parsons of Jefferson, N.C.; two step-daughters: Barbara Eanes of Danville, Va., and Rhonda Huffman of Lenoir, N.C.; several nieces and several nephews.
