FENDER Eartie Lee Fender, age 84, of 888 Grandview Drive, Sparta, died Friday evening, December 31, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by a daughter, Ethel M. Fender of the home; a sister, Betty Fender of the home; a brother, R.L. Fender of Sparta; two sisters-in-law, Susie Fender and Ennice Fender, both of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 3rd at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

PARSONS Mrs. Carolyn Halsey Parsons, age 79, of 4191 Walnut Branch Road, Sparta, died Friday morning, December 31, 2004, at the Alleghany memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Page Parsons, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Gaynell Richardson. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and John Wyatt, and Mary and Tim Walker, all of Sparta; one son-in-law, Gerald Richardson of Brevard; four grandchildren, Melissa Hart and husband William of Sparta, Timothy Wyatt of Raleigh, Dennis Richardson and wife Stacey of Brevard, and Andrew Walker of Sparta; five great-grandchildren, Megan Richardson and Emily Richardson of Brevard, and Jacob, Eliza and Wyatt Hart, all of Sparta; four sisters, Edith Parsons, Ellen Ray, Mary Lavonnie Spauldin, all of Sparta and Loretta Helsel of Elkton, MD; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 2nd at the Osborne Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home of Linda and John Wyatt at 4249 Walnut Branch Church Road, Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Osborne Memorial Cemetery Fund, c/o Burton Osborne, 150 Burton Lane, Piney Creek, NC 28663.

PHIPPS Kenneth Worth Phipps, age 74, of Piney Creek, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at his home. He was born in Meadow Grove, Nebraska to Cora E. Ward and J. Lester Phipps who preceded him in death. He is survived by his sisters Barbara Conrad of Piney Creek and Ella Sommers of Dalton, Ohio; a brother-in-law Donald Conrad; two nieces, Carole Conrad, of New York City and Barbara Jean Ellis of Ohio; and two nephews, Donald Conrad II, of Greensboro, and Dean Sommers, of Dalton, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 31st. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Piney Creek Methodist Church Cemetery. Reverend Peter Parish will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. The family respectfully requests no food. Flowers will be appreciated. Kenneth was a lifelong farmer with an unusual affinity for his animals and love for the land. He was also an avid family hstorian and was proud of his direct descendancy from the local pioneer/patriots: Capt. Enoch Osborne, Old John Hash, Thomas Landreth, Nathan Ward, Ben Phipps, William Parsons, James Sturgill Sr, Jacob Anderson and Josiah Stansborough.

BRYANT Mr. John Earlie Bryant, age 85, of 1029 Shawtown Road, Glade Valley, died Friday evening, December 24, 2004, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. He was the son of the late, Wesley and Della Shaw Bryant, and was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Neal of Jonesville. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Higgins Bryant of the home; a sister, Virgie Hemric of Elkin; two nieces, Lottie Swift of Mountain Park and Hazel Muncus of Winston-Salem; two nephews, George Neal of Walkertown and Walter Hemric of North Wilkesboro; and a special cousin and neighbor, Russell Shaw of Glade Valley. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 27th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. A graveside committal service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Rich Hill Cemetery at Glade Valley. BLEVINS Mr. Bruce Earl Blevins, Sr., age 82, of 1651 Mountain View Road, Glade Valley, died Friday morning, December 24, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Morene McKnight Blevins of the home; a daughter, Cindy Sue Blevins Johnson and husband Ted of Greensboro; a son, Bruce Earl Blevins, Jr. and wife Sharon of Shady Side, Maryland; four sisters, Dorothy Higinbothom of Bel Air, MD, Ruth Hughes of Greensboro, Nancy Brandon and husband Fred of Aberdeen, MD, and Patsy Webster and husband Keith of North East, MD; a brother, Charles Blevins and wife Sis, of Forest Hill, MD; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 28th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

MOXLEY Mr. Clinton Haywood Moxley, age 77, of Carolina Beach and Winston-Salem, and formerly of Alleghany County, died Wednesday evening, December 22, 2004, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington, NC. He was the son of the late Rufus and Lucy Holcomb Moxley and was preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby, Ray and Junior Moxley. He is survived by his wife, Leola Whitlock Moxley of the home; a son, Larry Moxley and wife Karen of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Ricky Moxley; a granddaughter, Taylor Moxley; two brothers, Joe Moxley of Sparta and Tommy Moxley of Glade Valley; five sisters, Betty Lou Jones and husband Elgin of Glade Valley, Jennie Lee Edwards of Sparta, Evelyn Johnson and husband Carl Dean of Ennice, Wanda Jones and husband Dwight of Sparta, and Louise Caudill and husband Charles of Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 26th at the Antioch Cemetery in the Stratford Community near Sparta. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of Jennie Lee Edwards at 2465 Glade Valley Road, Sparta. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center, 725 Wellington Avenue, Wilmington, NC 28401. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Moxley family.

DAVIS Mr. Alva John Davis, age 88, of 2659 Savannah Road, Galax, Virginia, died Tuesday morning, December 21, 2004, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Combs Davis; his parents, Luther and Lola Wright Davis; two sisters, Zenna Roberts and Wilma Davis; and two brothers, Lonnie and Foster Davis. He is survived by a sister, Cordovia Richardson of Raleigh; and special great-great-nieces and nephew, Tessley Higgings, Emily Hash, Rachel Craig and John Brown. Several other nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 24th at the Savannah United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Edmonds Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the church and at other times at the home place. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Davis family.

CROUSE Mr. Richard Calloway “R.C.” Crouse, age 73, of 9061 Glade Valley Road, Ennice, died Sunday, December 19, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Eva Sue Johnson Crouse of the home; a son, Jack Crouse of Sparta; two grandchildren, Amber Lineberry and Damon Crouse; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Sue Chipman of Elkin, Mildred Moore of Hickory, and Lois Dickens of Hickory; and three brothers, Clifford Crouse and wife Gertrude of Sparta, Dennis Crouse and wife Betty of Ennice, and Ralph Crouse and wife Shirley of Sparta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 22nd at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, friends may call at the home at any time.

WAGONER Mrs. Mary Severt Richardson Wagoner, age 65, of 8991 Hwy. 18 S, Laurel Springs, died Sunday, December 19, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the daughter of the late Edd and Carrie Miller Severt. She is survived by her husband, Hubert Wagoner of the home; a daughter, Teresa Edwards and husband James of Glade Valley; two sons, Don Richardson of Piney Creek, and Raymond Richardson of Telford, TN; two grandchildren, Jessica and Jennifer Edwards; two sisters, Gladys Taylor and husband Edd of Youngsville, NC, and Margaret Jarvis of Ennice; and two brothers, Basil Severt and wife Ann of Raleigh, and Wayne Severt and wife Ruth of North Wilkesboro. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 22nd at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Laurel Springs Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. ROYAL Mr. Ezra Green Royal, age 80, of 465 Choate Dairy Road, Sparta, died Thursday, December 16, 2004, at SunBridge of Alleghany. He is survived by his wife, Emma Faye Collins Royal of the home; three sons, Kenneth Royal and wife Retha of Delta, Pa., Donnie Royal and wife Chris of Lampasas, Texas, and Ezra Allen Royal of Galax, Va; a daughter, Ennice Thompson of Johnson City, TN; a sister, Hester Clark of Lenoir; five brothers, Presley Royal of Independence, Va., Carl Denton Royal and wife Ethel of Kernersville, Beldon Clay Royal and wife Fredia of Sparta, Page Royal and wife Betty of Sparta, and Charlie Royal and wife Betty of Ennice; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step-daughters, Ester Shaver of husband Frank, and Sue Shaver of husband Johnny, all of Traphill. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 18th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Bethany Cemetery at Independence, Va. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of Beldon and Fredia Royal, 98 Royal Lake Dr, in Sparta.

BRYAN Mr. Melvin Ray Bryan, age 42, of 200 E. Whitehead St. Apt 2G, Sparta, died Friday, December 10, 2004, at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferrell and Ina Valentine Bryan. He is survived by a daughter, Rachelle Bryan of Greensboro; a devoted caregiver, Lisa Bryan of Sparta; and four brothers, Nathan Bryan and wife Ethelene of Winston-Salem, George Bryan and wife Carol of Sparta, James Bryan and wife Jackie of Sparta, and Ferrell Bryan, Jr. and wife Vickie of Independence, Virginia. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14 at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.

SHAW Mr. Charles Franklin Shaw, Jr., age 57, of 2625 Mahogany Rock Road, Sparta, died Friday evening, December 10, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Shaw was born in Galax, Virginia on June 17, 1947, to Charles F. Shaw, Sr. and Nora Bedsaul Shaw, who preceded him in death. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Sergeant Major. His wife, Sue W. Shaw of the home; a daughter, Laurie Baremor of Sparta; a son, Brett Baremor and wife Deana of Sparta; and two grandchildren, Meghan Cleary and Chasey Baremor, survive him. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 15th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. The U.S. Army Honor Guard from Fort Bragg will conduct military rites, at the funeral home. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287, Sparta, NC 28675. The family respectfully requests their privacy at home during this difficult time.

MAINES Mr. Robert Dean “Bobby” Maines, age 46, of 431 Little River Dr, Sparta, died Friday, December 10, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Joan Hawks Maines; a daughter, Brandi Maines of Sparta; a son, Bradley Maines of Lynchburg, Va; his mother, Ruth Brannock Maines of Sparta; three brothers, Tommy Maines of Sparta, Billy Maines of Fairview, Va., and Lewis Paul Maines, Jr. of Sparta; a sister, Debbie Bautista of Sparta; his maternal grandmother, Nancy Brannock of Sparta; his mother-in-law, Jean Williams and husband Carl; and his father-in-law, Edgar Hawks of Elkin. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 13th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Pleasant Home Baptist Church Cemetery. RECTOR Mrs. Donna Farmer Rector, age 42, of 278 Tedder Road, Sparta, died Friday morning, December 10, 2004, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Her parents, Rev. George Edd Farmer and Betty Lou Mabe Farmer, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Billy F. Rector of the home; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy and Ricky Brinegar, Patty and Steve Harris, and Sharon and Alfred Casstevens, all of Sparta; her maternal grandmother, Ruth Mabe Bryant of Laurel Springs; a special friend, Frankie Barnes of Piney Creek; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 12, at the West Side Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. JOHNSON Mr. Edward Carl Johnson, 82, of 6116 US Hwy 21 South, Glade Valley, died Monday evening, December 6, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. Mr. Johnson was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on January 28, 1922. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII, and had a long career as an educator. He taught at Glade Valley School and Sparta School until his retirement in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Frances Mashburn Johnson of the home; a son, Henry E. Johnson and wife Susan of Tazewell, VA; three daughters, Rebecca Boyette and husband, Tim, of Troutdale, VA; Mary Sue Boyette and husband James, of Glade Valley; Sarah Blumenstein and husband, John, of Rock Hill, SC; 17 grandchildren; two sisters, Crystal Anderson of Troutdale, VA, and Eunice Gustafson of Duluth, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Sutton of Greensboro, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 11, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. RASH Mrs. Retha Bennett Rash, age 73, of 20 Maywood Drive, Taylors, South Carolina, and formerly of Glade Valley, died Friday, December 3, 2004, at the Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital in Greer, South Carolina. She was the widow of Paul V. Rash. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Ronnie Strange of Taylors, SC; a son and daughter-in-law, Clayton and Tracy Rash of Belcamp, Maryland; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Linda Bennett of the home, Emogene Mann and husband, Freddie, of Abbottstown, PA, and Ruth Nelson and Reba Cheeks, both of Elkin; three brothers, Rev. Charlie Bennett and wife Frances of Glade Valley, J.C. Bennett of Sparta and Clinton Bennett of Elkin; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 5th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Rich Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the funeral home.

EDWARDS Mrs. Eula Mae Chappell Edwards, age 74, of 70 Hawthorne St. Sparta, died Wednesday evening, December 1, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Master Sergeant Guy Wesley Edwards who died on November 6, 1965. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and Roger Brady of Laurel Springs; three sons, Stanley Gale Edwards of Boone, Duke Richard Edwards of Burlington and Matthew Guy Edwards of the home; five grandchildren, Tommy Brooks and wife Kandi of Austin, Alisha Edwards Ellis of Statesville, Stacey Edwards of Sparta, Ronnie Edwards of Thurmond and Josh Edwards of Sparta; five great-grandchildren, Kristen Brooks, Hunter Brooks and Amber Brooks. Baylee and Gabriel Ellis; a half-sister, Lois Billings of Sparta; and a step-brother, Odell Wright of Glade Valley. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 4th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Glade Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
