RECTOR Mrs. Raye Bare Rector, age 72, of 1458 U.S. Hwy. 18 South, Sparta, died Monday evening, February 21, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was preceded in death by a brother, Hobert Bare of Maryland. She is survived by her husband, Bennie Laverne Rector of Sparta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Rev. Mark Hawks of Sparta, and Gail and Ronald Norman of Sparta; three grandchildren; three brothers, Gilbert and Ottis Bare of Sparta; Jerry Bare of Glade Valley; and a half-brother, Larry Bare of Sparta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 23rd at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Bare Family Cemetery near the home place. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family will gather at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday..
HENDRIX Pearl Ruth Hendrix, age 96, of 179 Combs St. Sparta, NC, died Monday afternoon, February 21, 2005, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She is survived by a sister, Evon Dickens of Sparta; three nieces, Judy Jordan and husband, Elder Kyle of Ennice; Judy Lawrence and husband David of Wilkesboro; and Madelene Handy of Mt. Airy; two great nieces, Ashley Lawrence and Katelyn Dickens; four great nephews, David Jordan and Nathaniel Dickens, and Gene and Mike Handy; and a host of cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 23rd at the Glade Creek Union Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, the family will be at the church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Glade Creek Union Baptist Church c/o Paul Smith, 1905 Crab Creek Road, Ennice, NC 28623. There will be a meal at the church following the service. The family request anyone who can, stay and join them for lunch.
BARTON Hazel Fender Barton was born September 18, 1918, in Alleghany County, NC to Glenn and Maggie Osborne Fender. She had one brother, Hoke, and one sister, Elsie Wyatt, both of whom preceded her in death. After graduating from Sparta High School, Hazel attended nursing school in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. After further training in Ann Arbor, Michigan, she was certified as nurse anesthetist. She joined the staff of Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. After a few years, she joined the staff of Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, where she retired. She met her husband, John O. Barton in Charlotte. John’s career was a jeweler and gemstone appraiser for Finks Jewelers in Charlotte. Hazel became a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease, and spent the last nine years of her life in Sunbridge Nursing Home and Grayson Nursing and Rehab. She passed away February 19, 2005. She is survived by two nephews, Michael Fender of Piney Creek, NC, and Richard Turner of Roanoke, Va; one great-nephew, Bobby Fender of Piney Creek; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Turner of Roanoke and Thelma Baird of Suffolk, Va; two special friends and caregivers, Billy and Randy Gantt of Charlotte, NC; and numerous cousins in Alleghany County. Hazel is buried by her husband John, her parents and her brother and sister in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Piney Creek, NC. Memorial Contributions may be made to Mt. BERGMAN Mr. George Frank Bergman, Sr. age 81, of 36 Taylor St. Sparta, died Friday morning, February 18, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by, daughter, Sandra Kay Naegle of North Las Vegas, Nevada; sons, George F Bergman, Jr. of Palmyra, New York and Daniel M. Bergman of Ballston Spa, New York; five grandchildren; and a special friend, Sharon Muldoon of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 21st at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will gather at the funeral home Monday morning at 10:00 a.m.
CAUDELL Mrs. Rebecca Sanders Caudell, age 76, of 10 Clyde St. Sparta, died Saturday morning, February 19, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by her husband, Mack Caudell of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Charlie Smith, and Susan and Huck Adams, all of Sparta; a son and daughter-in-law, Mack Jr. and Betty Caudell of Sparta; three grandchildren, Bryan Smith, Mandy Miller and husband Chad, and Josh Adams; one great-grandson, Tanner Miller; step-grandson, Jason Evans; step great-granddaughter, Meaghan Evans; a sister, Mattie Lee Hall of Independence, Va; and foster brother, Doug Greene and wife Wendy of Alexandria, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 21st at the New Haven Church of the Brethren. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. MENDIOLA Little Kansas Grace Mendiola, infant daughter of Joy Lynn Royal and Thomas Mendiola of Sparta, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Besides her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandmother, Mary Jane Royal of Sparta; maternal grandfather, George Ronald Royal of Ennice; and paternal grandparents, Joaquin Mendiola Oviedo and Celia Trejo Velazquez. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 10th at the Crab Creek Cemetery in Ennice. Rev. James Smith will officiate.
LOWE Mrs. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Roberts Lowe, age 83, of 9120 Glade Valley Rd., Ennice, died Friday morning, February 4, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by a daughter, Treva Bedsaul of Ennice; two sons, Tommy and David Chappell, both of Tucson, Arizona; four grandchildren, Ricky Bedsaul, Sandra Bowers, Josh Chappell and Cody Chappell; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillie Chappell of Independence, Va; two step-daughters, Rebecca and Kelly Chappell of Tucson, Arizona; two step-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Emily Jennings of Tucson, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 6th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Edmonds Community Cemetery. JORDAN Mr. Cecil Houston Jordan, age 77, of Abingdon, Maryland, formerly of Alleghany County, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Billings Jordan. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie Dean and Dorothy Jordan of Abingdon, Maryland; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Elder Kyle and Judy Jordan of Ennice, and Rufus and Notrie Jordan of Bel Air, Md; a half brother, Eli "Junior" Billings and wife Mildred of Dobson; a half sister, Doris Dotson and husband Willie of Glade Valley; a half sister, Reba Wyatt of Glade Valley; and two step-brothers, Jim Billings and wife Kathy of Topeka, Kansas, and Bert Billings of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2nd at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Pine Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. BROOKS Mr. Garland Lee Brooks, age 64, of 181 Orchard Lane, Elk Creek, Va., formerly of Alleghany County, passed away Monday morning, March 28, 2005, at his home. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Lane, and a nephew, Billy Lane. He is survived by his wife, Nell Williams Brooks of the home; three daughters, Marsha Davis and Twania Davis of Fries, Va., and Michelle Parsons of Texas.; five sisters, Juanita Sidden, Bertha Carrick, Nancy Caudill, and Elva Hawkins and husband Jerry, all of Sparta, and Marie Long and husband Charlie, of Roaring Gap; three brothers, John Brooks and wife, Lucy of Glade Valley, Donley Brooks and wife, Barbara of Laurel Springs and Ernest Brooks and wife, Judy of Sparta; and abrother-in-law, David Lane of Laurel Springs. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, March 30th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A graveside committal service will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning, March 31st at the Landmark Cemetery in the Whitehead Community.
