PARSONS Mr. William Cole Parsons, age 92, of 480 Hwy 93, Sparta, died Friday evening, March 25, 2005, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. He is survived by his wife, Vella Wyatt Parsons of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Bytha and Frank Duncan of State Road; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Shirley Parsons of Sparta; four step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 28th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. WYATT Elder Robert Bayne Wyatt, age 70, of 179 Combs St. Sparta, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Bowers Wyatt. He is survived by a daughter, Lujean Keepfer and husband Jim of Sparta; two sons, Don Wyatt and wife Cindy of Taylorsville; Jim Wyatt and wife Karen of Sparta; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Roy Wyatt of Laurel Springs; and two sisters, Mae Owens of Mt. Airy and Edith Kennedy of High Point. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 25th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Wyatt Family Cemetery at Laurel Springs. The family will gather at the funeral home from 2 until 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The family will be at their respective homes.
MAINES Mr. Robert Hoover Maines, age 73, of 8409 NC Hwy 113, Piney Creek, died Tuesday morning, March 22, 2005, at his home. He was the son of the late, Luther and Bonnie Reeves Maines, and was preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Raymond and Maggie Hill; and two brothers-in-law, Mitchell Perdue and Bill Brown. Hoover helped start the Piney Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He was named Fireman of the year in 1981, and was later made an Honorary Life Time Member. He was also a member of the Mt. Carmel Church of the Brethren. He is survived by his wife, Sadie Hill Maines of the home; two sisters, Virginia Brown of Conover, NC, and Louise Cleary and husband Robert Dean, of Sparta; a brother, J.R. Maines and wife Helen of Sparta; three nieces, Debbie Varner, Robin Roberts and Teresa Maines; two nephews, Kenny Horton and Michael Maines; and a sister-in-law, Susie Perdue of Greensboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 25th at the Mount Carmel Church of the Brethren, near Scottville. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. REEVES Mr. Ray Stuart Reeves, age 81, of 3332 New Haven Road, Sparta, passed away Friday evening, March 19, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Reeves. Ray was born in Alleghany County on October 26, 1923, to the late, Lonnie and Lela Shumate Reeves. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He retired from the Sarah Lee Corporation after 32 years of service, working in Galax, Virginia and Winston-Salem. He was a former plant manager and sewing service manager. He was also a member of the Sparta Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Jean Osborne Reeves of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jim Alderman of Rockingham, NC; two grandchildren, Mary Davis and Johnny Livingston; a sister, Jean Gentry of North Wilkesboro; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Floyd and June Reeves of Sparta; Wade and Doris Reeves of Charlotte; and a daughter-in-law, Faye Reeves of Pensacola, Florida. Eight step-grandchildren and 15 step-great-grandchildren also survive. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 21st at the Sparta Presbyterian Church. A private committal service will held at a later date. There will be no visitation at the funeral home; however, friends may call at the home at any time. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contribution be made to the Sparta Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 474, Sparta, NC 28675. DOWELL Mr. Ernest Lee Dowell, age 56, of 179 Combs St. Sparta, died Wednesday evening, March 16, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by four brothers, Ralph, Densel and Thomas Dowell, all of Sparta, and Carl “Buck” Dowell of Mt. Airy. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 19th at the Whitehead Joines Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family will gather at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
BROWN Mrs. Doris Logene “Jean” Pugh Brown, age 79, of 1696 CR 607C, Bushnell, Florida, died Tuesday morning, March 8, 2005, in Florida. She was the widow of Odell Brown and the daughter of the late Troy and Bonnie Blevins Pugh, and was preceded in death by her brother, Fred Pugh. She is survived by a son, Dennis Leslie Brown of Winter Garden, Florida; a daughter, Linda Brown Hanson of Bowling Green, Kentucky; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 12th at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service to lie in state. VANDERBILT Mrs. Barbara Woodie Vanderbilt, age 52, of 200 E. Whitehead, Apt. 2F, Sparta, died Tuesday morning, March 8, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta.She was preceded in death by her father, Jones Edward Woodie. She is survived by her husband, Clayton Vanderbilt of the home; her mother, Ruth Alderson Woodie of Sparta; a brother, James Edward Woodie of Piney Creek; her mother-in-law, Dorothy Vanderbilt of Sparta; a sister-in-law, Jane Toy of Sparta; and her aunts and uncles, Zane and Sandy Woodie of Piney Creek, Norman and Betty Alderson, and Harold and Mary Alderson and Edward Alderson, all of Keeling, Virginia, Francis Alderson Tate of Danville, Va, Leta Kenyon of Stroudsberg, Pa, and Margie and Earl Brock of Sparta, TN. Several cousins also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 10th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Piney Creek. Romney Brim for 79 years, 9 months and grandmother of Donnie Brim of Sparta,was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Sunday March 6, 2005. She was born June 11, 1908 in Surry County to the late Jay and Alice Cook Gammons. Mrs.Brim was a homemaker and served as a Sunday School Teacher for 35 Years. She was a faithful member of Mt. Airy Church of God. Mrs. Brim was a most wonderful and loving mother of nine children in which she is survived by her precious husband of the home and by five sons and three daughters-in-law Gloma "Jay" and Carolyn Brim of Mooresville, Delbert and Betty Brim, Plato Brim, and Reavis Brim all of Mt. Airy, and Bronson and Bobbie Brim of Rockingham; and three daughters and son-in-law, Leeronie Easter ofGreensboro, Oleeta Chilton and Kornella and Donald Martin all of Mt. Airy. She is survived by twenty-four grandchildren, thirty four great grandchildren and twelve great great grandchildren. In addition to her parents Mrs. Brim was preceded in death by One daughter Vernie Watson, two sisters Zella Simmons and Vassie Dollyhite by a daughter-in-law Mary June Brim and by a son-in-law Marvin Watson. Funeral services will be held Wednesday March 9, 2005, at 2:00 P.M. at the Mt. Airy Church of God. The services will be conducted by Rev. Charles Powers, Rev. Don Whichard, and Rev. Junior Jenkins. Two special family friends will be speakers. Burial will take place at Old Westfield Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday night 7 to 9 P.M. at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. PRESNELL Mrs. Lady Bird Presnell, age 81, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, died Monday morning, March 7, 2005, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of N.G. Presnell. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Joyce and Jimmy Walker of Ennice, and Dixie Manuel of Rural Hall; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Larry and Jane Presnell of Burnsville, Jimmy and Libby Presnell of Sparta, Ronnie and Debbie Presnell of Ennice, and Terry Presnell; one brother and sister-in-law, Amos and Peggy Presnell of Sparta; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and four step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 9th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. ANDREWS Maud Richardson Andrews of Panama City, Florida, formerly the Alleghany County Librarian of Sparta, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 5, 2005, at age 97 years 11 months and 14 days. She is survived by her son and his spouse, Robert L. and Bobbie K. Andrews of Panama City, Florida; one brother, Arzie C. Richardson of Independence, Va; one granddaughter and spouse, Karen and William Bradford of Ooltewah, TN; two grandsons, Alan W. Andrews of Chattanooga, TN, and Robert L. Andrews II of Raleigh, NC; one step-grandson and spouse, Stan and Christy Coulthard of Panama City, Florida; one step-grandson, Steve Coulthard of Roswell, GA; two great-grandsons, Andrew Clark and Corey Bradford of Ooltewah, TN; a step-great-grandson, Clay Coulthard; and one step-great-granddaughter, Katie Coulthard of Panama City, Florida. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Andrews (the grandfather of Alleghany scouting), her father and mother, Lummie and Cornelia Reynolds Richardson; five brothers, Odell, Woodrow, Glenn, Albert and Wayne Richardson; and five sisters, Bessie, Clara and Beulah Richardson, Ruby Choate and Zora Irwin. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery in the Stratford Community. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
