JOINES Miss Mona Faye Joines, age 71, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, died Friday morning, April 29, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Leola Brown Joines. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Willous and Darlene Joines of Sparta; and a nephew, Wesley Joines of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 1st, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery in the Stratford Community. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Willous and Darlene Joines, 4112 Spicer Mountain Road, in Sparta. The family request that no food be brought to the home.
JESSUP Mrs. Helen Williams Jessup, age 81, of 179 Combs St. Sparta, died Wednesday morning, April 27, 2005, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Ira Jessup. Helen was born in Wythe County, Virginia, on August 8, 1923, to the late Sherman C. Williams and Sarah Lou Sexton Williams. She lived several years in Forsyth County and was employed by Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Helen Maxine and Bryon Joyce of Winston-Salem, Sherri and John Skelton of Moore, SC, and Carolyn and Bob Sprinkle of Sparta; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert H. and Priscilla Groseclose of Clemmons, NC; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Virginia Stewart of Sparta, Stella Holland of Fort Lauderdale, Fla, and Ann Myers of Altamonte Springs, Fla. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 29th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. A graveside committal service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, NC.
COWAN Mrs. Mary Taylor Cowan, age 90, of 181 Blue Bird Lane, Laurel Springs, died Sunday evening, April 24, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Howard Cowan and was preceded in death by a brother, Kemp Taylor. She is survived by a son, Bealer Caudill and wife Diane of Laurel Springs; three grandchildren, John and Grady Caudill, and Darlene Carpenter and husband, Steven; and four great-grandchildren, Rachel Caudill, Daniel Caudill, Adam Burgess and Lauren Burgess. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 27th, at the Pine Fork Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Wednesday at the church. ABSHER Mrs. Beulah Murray Absher, age 72, of 2274 Grandview Dr. Sparta, died Saturday morning, April 23, 2005, at her home. She is survived by her husband, J.K. Absher of the home; four sons, Bobby Absher and wife Margaret of Glade Valley, Billy Absher of Jonesville, Randy Absher of Jonesville, and Bryce Absher and wife Jean of Sparta; a daughter, Sandy Taylor of Sparta; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Kyle Murray and wife Betty of Ennice; five sisters, Omah Wyatt and husband Vaughn of Sparta, Lily Wyatt and husband Paul of Corla, MD, Ethel Clayville and husband Ronnie of Dover, DE, Ruth Fender of Sparta, and Mildred Billings and husband Eli of Dobson; a special friend, Joe Wagoner of Jonesville; and several nieces and nephews. SHEARIN Mrs. Emma Lee Shearin, age 88, of 86 Irwin St. Sparta, died Saturday morning, April 23, 2005, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Irwin Shearin, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Shearin Edwards. She is survived by three grandchildren, Lisa Carroll of Bluffton, SC, Cathy Barnwell of Clemmons, and Robert Allen Edwards of Sparta; five great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Eldon Edwards of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 26th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. WOOTEN Mr. James W. “Jimmy” Wooten, age 63, of 170 E. Whitehead St. Sparta, died Thursday morning, April 21, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was the son of the late Elder Charlie and Lena Brinegar Wooten, and was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Shirley Edwards Wooten. He is survived by his wife, Jean McLean Wooten of the home; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose and Jim Hudson of Sparta, Sarah and Donny Moxley of Ennice, Reba and Curtis Todd of Glade Valley, Linda and James Hash of Sparta, and Karon and Paul Holliday of Dobson; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ed Mack and Irene Wooten of Ennice, and Paul Wooten, Ray and Ruth Wooten, all of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 24th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Landmark Cemetery at Whitehead. The family will gather at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. There will be no visitation Saturday night. The family and friends will meet at Little Pine Liberty Church's Fellowship Hall after the service.
BROOKS Mr. Robert Guy Brooks, age 81, of 4084 Walnut Branch Church Road, Sparta, died Wednesday morning, April 20, 2005, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. He was born in Alleghany County on February 21, 1924, to Charlie and Ollie Sturgill Brooks. Guy served in the 4th US Marine Division in the Pacific Campaign during WWII. He was a retired electrician from the Bahnson Service Company of Winston-Salem, he was retired from Sparta Industries in Sparta, he was a member of Bellview Baptist Church at Laurel Springs, where he served as a Deacon for almost 25 yrs, and he was a member of Piney Creek Masonic Lodge #432. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Eaton Brooks of the home; three daughters, Ruthe Brooks of the home, Karen Kent and husband, David of Douglasville, Ga, and Carol Bennett and husband, Randy of North Wilkesboro; a son, Roger Brooks and wife Jane of Hays; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Doris Ward and husband Thomas Gayle of Richmond, Va, and Clara Gillespie and husband Randall of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and three brothers, Jack Brooks and wife Barbara, and Russell Brooks, all of Piney Creek, and Bill and Darlene Brooks of Laurel Springs. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 23 at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. DILLS Mrs. Thelma Lee Estep Dills, age 75 of Greensboro, NC, died Saturday morning, April 16, 2005, at the Ridgeland Nursing Center in Ridgeland, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Cery and Lillie Brooks Estep and was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Woodrow Estep. She is survived by her husband, Elmer Dills of Greensboro; a daughter, Helen Pitman of Ridgeland, SC; three son James Richard Dills, of Goldsboro, NC, Donald Cery Dills of Prosperity, SC and Ronald Lee Dills of Gibsonville, NC; four sisters, Elsie Collins, Velma Vaughn and Agnes Joines and husband Ernest, all of Sparta, and Viola Church of Independence, Va; one brother, John A. Estep and wife Jo of Carmel, California; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Rose Estep and Maxine Estep; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery in the Stratford Community. ANDREWS Edward James “Eddie” Andrews, age 35 of 105 Short Creek Trail, State Road, NC, died Friday, April 15, 2005, at his residence. He is survived by a son, Joshua Daniel Andrews of Ronda; a daughter, Ashley Danielle Andrews of Ronda; his father, Harlen Andrews, Sr., of Sparta; his mother, Gail Moody Andrews of Raleigh; two brothers, Harlen Andrews, Jr., of State Road and Allen Andrews of Ronda; the mother of his children, Karen Holsclaw of Ronda. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Crouse Family Cemetery. BILLINGS Mrs. Lillie Irene Brinegar Billings, age 93, of 158 Jones St., Sparta, died Saturday morning, April 16, 2005, at the Allehany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of William Rex Billings and was preceded in death by a son, Junior Kern Billing and a sister, Ethel Moxley. She is survived by three daughters, Anna Marie Crouse and husband Ralph, Lorraine Billings Wooten, Rachel Ann Evans and husband Cecil, all of Sparta; four sons, Bobby Rex Billings of High Point, Roger Lee Billings of Sparta, Billy Joe Billings of the home and David Wayne Billings and wife Margaret of Glade Valley; a sister, Mamie Brooks of Sparta; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; two special friends, Eldora Billings of N.
