FENDER Mrs. Ruth Hoppers Fender, age 85, of Wytheville, Virginia, and formerly of Sparta, NC, died Saturday morning, April 16, 2005, at the Asbury Place in Wytheville, Va. She was the widow of Clayton Fender and was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Moxley, and two brothers, Wayne and Bower Hoppers. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Clayta and Jack Bryant of Wytheville, Va, and Linda and Don Bowden of Chatham, Va; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 18, at the First Baptist Church of Sparta. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. RICHARDSON Mr. Lewis Richardson, age 60, of Society Hill, South Carolina, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in South Carolina. He was the son of the late Eltie and Bessie Truitt Richardson. He was born in Baywood, Virginia. He was a graduate of St. John’s High School and was a cattle farmer and a great outdoorsman. He is survived by his wife, Linda Eddins Richardson of the home; a brother, Ralph Richardson, and his wife, Elaine, of Society Hill, South Carolina; a sister, Shirley King and her husband Mike of Peachtree City, Georgia; and a number of nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Ryan Richardson. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at Sparta Cemetery. The family request that memorials be made to Brocks Mill Fire Department, 3173 Zoar Road, Cheraw, South Carolina 29520. A meal will be served at the former community building on Grayson Street in Sparta, after the service. Those who wish to bring food is urged to take it to the community building before the service.
CAUDILL Delores “Ann” Caudill, age 55, of 388 Pruitt Road, Sparta, died Tuesday morning, April 12, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the daughter of the late, Coy and Ethel Atwood Caudill and was also preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Reed and a brother, Leonard Lee Caudill. She is survived by three sisters, Mattie Crouse and husband Elder Raymond, Marie Chappell, andShirley and Blane Watson all of Sparta; and three brothers, Lebert Caudill and wife Dorothy of Jonesville, Dale Caudill of Sparta, and Vern and Yvonne Caudill of North Wilkesboro. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 15 at Landmark Union Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the church. FRIEZE Mr. Walter Lee Frieze, Sr., age 85, of 347 Hickory Mountain Road, Sparta, NC, and formerly of Charlotte, NC, died Monday morning, April 11, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Prather Frieze; a daughter, Janice Lee Frieze; a brother, Robert Jarvis Freize, Jr.; and a sister, Helen Mulkey. Walter was born in Belmont, NC, on February 9, 1920, to the late Robert Jarvis Freize, Sr. and Ella Mae Wilkinson Freize. He was owner and operator of Frieze Enterprises of Charlotte, NC, Elkin, NC and Lawton, Oklahoma. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge # 281, a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Oasis Temple of the Shrine in Charlotte. He was past president of Park Road Optimist Club, a board member of Carmel Country Club, a member of Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte, a member of River Hills Country Club in Charlotte, a member of the Roaring Gap Country Club at Roaring Gap, NC, and a founding member of Bay Hills Country Club in Orlando, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Miles Edwards Frieze of the home; a son, Walter Lee “Buddy” Frieze, Jr. and wife Margaret of Waxhaw, NC; two daughters, Barbara Frieze Carter of Greeneville, TN, and Kathy Frieze McKnight and husband Lawrence of Chuckey, TN; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three step-daughters, Paula Edwards Money of East Bend, NC, Pamela Edwards Spurlin Hoke and husband Doug of Ennice, NC, and Patti Edwards Tidwell and husband Mike of Maryville, TN; a step-son, Phil Edwards and wife Beverley of Ennice, NC; 12 step-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, April 12, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial service will also be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, April 16, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Carmel Road in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Nivens Center in Charlotte or the New Covenant Church in Ennice.
MAINES Mrs. Gladys McLean Maines, age 82, of 170 East Whitehead St. Sparta, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Ray Maines. She is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, R.J. and Wilma McLean of Springfield, Missouri, Rev. Robert and Shelby McLean of Galax, Va, and Young and Earline McLean of Galax, Va; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Hazel and Mack Rutherford of Galax, Va, Virgie Johnson of Glade Valley, and Jean and Jimmy Wooten of Sparta; special caregivers, Dan and Kathy Brooks of Maryville, Tennessee, Barbara and Danny Lyon of Sparta, Wanda and Randy Miles of Glade Valley, and Elizabeth and Jerry Mitchell of North Wilkesboro; andseveral other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 12th at the Pleasant Home Union Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10:00 a.m. to lie in state. The family will gather at the church at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, where friends may call. After the service the family will gather at the Little Pine Liberty Church’s Fellowship Hall for lunch. McCLURE Mrs. Katherine Counts McClure, age 87, of 179 Combs St, Sparta, died Thursday afternoon, April 7, 2005, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Brison McClure and was preceded in death by a daughter, Jolene Edwards; a son, Tommy McClure; and a grandson, John Edwards. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John B. and Faye McClure of Schertz, Texas; eight grandchildren, Daniel R. Edwards, Jr, Carlton Edwards, Kathy West, Patsy Bottomley, Lori D. Miller, Curtis W. McClure, Thomas McClure and Jimmy McClure; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 9th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery at Whitehead. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. CARNES Charlotte D. Carnes, 93, passed away at her home at 222 Highland Hills Dr. in Ennice, NC, on April 6th. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, John Carnes. She is survived by her daughter, Pat and son-in-law John Carriker of the hom, and her grandchildren Doug Carriker of Winston-Salem and Chandler Carriker and his finance Naomi Sease of Columbia, SC. She is also survived by her brother, Robert L. Decker, and his wife Ruth and their children Bob and wife Sharon, John and wife Carol, Peter and wife Connie, and Elizabeth and her husband Scott Wigginton. She was predeceased by her brother Kenneth L. Decker and his wife Eria. There are also many other special nieces and nephews. She formerly lived in Wilmington, NC, and attended St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Prior to living in Wilmington she resided with her husband John in Shelby, NC. She lived her life by bringing joy to others. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to any Hospice or to the building fund of Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal- Lutheran, PO Box 1266, Galax, VA. 24333. A service of memorial & resurrection for Charlotte Carnes will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, April 10th, at Christ Church, 2543 US Highway 21, Sparta, NC 28675. A service of memorial & resurrection will be planned for June at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wilmington.
BOWLING Marie Etta Craig Bowling, age 86, of 5300 Holmes Run Parkway, Alexandria, Virginia, died Tuesday morning, April 5, 2005, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Virginia. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Kennith Cooper of Sparta, and Linda and Robert Wilson of South Port, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Allie Bowling of Alexandria, Va; three sisters, Jean Buckmaster of Alexandria, Va, Lillian Oja of Seven Lakes Westend, NC, and Florence Ragland and husband Benson of Schuyler, Va; a brother, Herbert Craig of Arizona; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 8th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. A private graveside service will be conducted Monday, April 11th at the National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
ROYAL Mr. Vernon Martin “Marty” Royal, age 43, of 74 Luther St., Sparta, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was the son of the late Willie and Nancy Miles Royal. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Andrews Royal; two sons, Michael Paul and Nathan Royal of Sparta; and a sister, Sherry Chastain of Sparta. His cremains will be interred at Cherry Lane Baptist Church Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6th. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Friends may call at the home of Sherry Chastain at 74 Luther St., Sparta, at any time. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home is assisting the Royal family.
MOXLEY Mrs. Ethel Brinegar Moxley, age 95, of 215 Moxley Hollow Road, Sparta, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at her home. She was the widow of Bert Moxley and was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lee Lane, and five sons, Reece, Robert Lee, Bert Junior, James Roger and Buddy Moxley. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and June Moxley of Sparta; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Nellie and Frank Durham, Linda and Mickey Durham, all of Traphill, and Sylvia and Roby Jones of Winston-Salem; Bonnie Moxley of the home; two sisters, Mamie Brooks and Lillie Billings, both of Sparta; 23 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Alene Henson. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 5th at the Sparta Church of God. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
