Mrs. June Jeannette Delp, age 80, of 434 Ballpark Road, Sparta, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2005, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was the widow of Jesse Delp. She is survived by two sisters, Ethel Brewer of Kingsport, Tennessee and Ida Kate Cox of Church Hill Tennessee; a brother, Edward Wright of Kingsport, Tennessee; a step-grandson, Pete Saunders of Dale City, Tennessee; special friends, Mary Nilo, Ethel Spencer and Betty Spangler; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 12th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mary Lee Weaver Boyer, age 82, of Wilkesboro and formerly of Alleghany County, passed away Friday evening, July 8, 2005, at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. She was the widow of Bayne Landreth and John Boyer. She was preceded in death by a son, Terry L. Landreth. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas B. and Norma Landreth of Bel Air, Md; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. James and Janell Weaver of Millers Creek; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Judy Combs of Millers Creek, Patsy and George Mack Irwin of Sparta, and Derlene Boyer of Sparta; two grandsons and spouses, Thomas R. and Cheryl Landreth, and Timothy B. and Rebecca Landreth, all of Bel Air, Md; and four great-grandchildren, Crystal M. Landreth, Steven N. Landreth, Morgan T. Landreth and Bayne T. Landreth all of Bel Air, Md; Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 11th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Mrs. Ruby McCoin Billings, age 93, of Sparta, passed away Monday, July 4, 2005 at Wilkes Senior Village, North Wilkesboro, NC. She was the widow of Alonzo F. Billings, and was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Cecil and Hassell McCoin; a sister, Gladys McCoin and two infant grandsons. She had been a member of the Whitehead Union Baptist Church for 60 years. She is survived by one daughter, Shirley B. Waddell and husband Jim of Elizabeth City, NC; three sons, Lon M Billings and wife Sheila of Charleston, SC, James R. Billings and wife Linda of Sparta, and C. Ray Billings of Sparta; one brother, Dr. John M. McCoin of Lawrence, Kansas; five grandchildren, Susan Lamprey, Vicki Lowe, Karen Burns, Kim Wooten and Jimmy Waddell; seven great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 7th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Elder Don Richardson and Rev. Eddie Wooten will officiate. Cecil Edwin Richardson, age 73, of 843 Mountain Valley Road, Laurel Springs, died Friday morning, August 26, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Linda Richardson, of the home; a son, Craig Richardson of the home; a daughter, Shelda Sparks and husband Tommy of North Wilkesboro; a granddaughter, Marissa Stanley of North Wilkesboro; four sisters, Amalean Wagoner Witherspoon of Pfafftown, Shirley Wagoner Miles and husband Tom of Glade Valley; Una Wagoner Adams and husband Larry of Yadkinville, Joy Wagoner Daniel of East Bend; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 28th at the Pine Fork Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes preceeding the funeral service to lie in state. WAGONER
Mrs. Janie Lovety Crouse Wagoner, age 88 of Winston-Salem, and formerly of Glade Valley, NC died Thursday evening, August 25, 2005, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was the widow of Blan O. Wagoner and was preceded in death by a grandson, Greg Douglas;, and three sisters, Ruth Loggins, Gladys Crigger and Marie Nichols. She was born in Alleghany County on July 9, 1917, to the late Charlie and Letha Blackburn Crouse. She was the last and oldest charter member of Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church near Roaring Gap. She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Amalean Wagoner Witherspoon of Pfafftown, Shirley Wagoner Miles and husband Tom of Glade Valley, Una Wagoner Adams and husband Larry of Yadkinville, and Joy Wagoner Daniel of East Bend; eight grandchildren' 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Tressie Crouse of Dobson and Viola Wood of Sparta; three brothers, Herbert Crouse and Raymond Crouse of Glade Valley and Earl Crouse of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 28th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Antioch cemetery in the Stratford Community. HIGGINS
Samuel Higgins, age 72, of Vancouver, Washington, passed away August 18, 2005. He was born on March 19, 1933 in Sparta, North Carolina to Elder William Quincy and Docia Brown Higgins. Samuel graduated from Sparta High School and worked for Boeing for 9 years before attending Everett Community College and graduating from Western Washington College in 1969. He worked in the Bellingham School District, retiring in 1992 after teaching for in public schools for twenty-one years. Samuel married
Charlene Vanderford on January 12, 1963 in Kirkland, Washington and lived in Whatcom County from 1964 to 2000. He was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church in Bellingham, Washington, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Posse, Mt. Baker Bee Keepers Association, Washington Teachers Association and the School Board at Meridian. He was an avid gardener, bee keeper, horseman and cattle raiser on his small farm. He also enjoyed fishing, boating and pheasant hunting with his dog. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Higgins of Vancouver, Washington; daughter Laurie Calderbank of Gresham, Oregon; sons, Bill Higgins of Springhill, Florida and Brian Higgins of Thailand; five grandchildren; four brothers, John Higgins of Laurel , Delaware, Herbert Higgins of Seaford, Delaware, James Higgins of Bridgeville, Delaware and Joe Higgins of Sparta; six sisters, Ruth Bryant of Glade Valley, Mary Holcheck of Hurlock, Maryland, Lois Dixon of Laurel Springs, Ethel Smith of Sparta, and Evelyn King and Evon Hull, both of Mount Airy. Memorial services was held on Saturday, August 27th at 2:00 p.m. at Columbia Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, Washington. Peggy Jean Butcher Fredenburg, age 65, of 46 Joy Lane, Sparta, died Monday morning, August 22, 2005, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Charles L. Fredenburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Angela Gates of Cana, Va; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Linda Butcher of Traphill, and Bunny and Becky Butcher of Thurmond; grandchild, Hannah Gates; special aunt, Clyde Moxley of Sparta; special nieces, Heather Butcher of Thurmond, and Robin Poplin of State Road; and special nephew, Steven Butcher of Greensboro. A memorial service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, August 24th at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. WHITAKER
Mrs. Ina Dette McMillan Whitaker, age 79, of Maplewood Apt. #7, Sparta, died Saturday, August 13, 2005, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was the widow of Ed Whitaker. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Geneva and Jerry Bare of Glade Valley, and June and Raymond Moxley of Sparta; three sons, Carlis Paul Whitaker of the home, Billy Dean Whitaker of Marion, NC, and Thomas Earl Whitaker and friend, Eve, of Sparta; two brothers, J.R. McMillan of Sparta, and Claude McMillan and wife Mildred of Deleware; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 16th at the New Salem cemetery on Pine Swamp Road in Sparta. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. THOMPSON
Mrs. Attaree Norman Thompson, age 95, of 546 Glade Valley Road, Glade Valley, NC, died Saturday morning, August 13, 2005, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin after a brief illness. She had been a resident of Parkwood Place in Elkin. She was the widow of J. Rush Thompson. She was born in Surry County on April 13, 1910 to the late Lacy Austin and Dora Wolfe Norman. She graduated from Glade Valley High School in 1928, and attended Appalachian Teachers College. She taught school in Surry County and was employed by the postal service from the late 1930’s until her retirement. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Norma T. and Patrick Price of Asheville, Helen T. and Jerry Duncan of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Janet Price Ferrell and husband Woody of Asheville, Kathy P. Carroll and husband Steve of Lexington, Kentucky, and Heather Duncan of Charlotte; and five great-grandchildren, Rush and Austin Ferrell, Mason, Beau and Sam Carroll. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 15th at the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. MAVRIKOS
Mrs. Dorothy "Jean" Rutherford Mavrikos of Andover, Mass, and formerly of Alleghany County, went home to be with the Lord August 4, 2005, at the Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass. She was the daughter of the late Zack and Mae Scott Rutherford. Jean did me the great honor of being my wife for 37 years. She reflected the love of God in all her relationships with people, always a kind word for everyone regardless of their status. She also gave 120% in everything she did. In high school she was in the Beta Club Honor Society and also a class officer. She was also voted the most athletic, having played varsity basketball and softball. Later she attended Appalachian State University. After we married
and moved to Boston, she became a Vice President of a major bank, and worked for 26 years. She fought breast cancer for 25 years; it eventually went to her bones. An avid golfer and a breast cancer victim, she won the ladies club championship having to make up a 6-stroke lead. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school and would spend hours preparing her lessons for the children she taught. She is survived by her husband, Jim Mavrikos of the home; a daughter, Debbie Mavrikos of Andover, Mass.; a grandson, Schane Scipione of Andover, Mass.; a sister, Lou Reid Rutherford of Piney Creek; a brother, George Rutherford of Piney Creek; and two nephews and spouses, Jimmy and Tracy Rutherford of Sparta, and Jamie and Sherry Rutherford of Wilkesboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 8th at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery. Mrs. Margie "Wilma" Black Edwards, age 78, of 1857 Pleasant Home Road, Sparta, died Thursday evening, August 4, 2005, at the Wilkes Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Cordelia Osborne Black, and was the widow of Harrell Edwards. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Debbie Edwards of Independence, Va., and Roger and Karen Edwards of Oak Island, NC; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Edna Reeves of Elkin and Mildred Wingfield of Asheville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 6th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Crab Creek Cemetery.
