BROWN
Mr. Wiley Claude Brown, age 97, of 239 Twin Brooks Way, Piney Creek, died Monday evening, October 31, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Privette Brown of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Leota and Leff Jones of Sparta; a son and daughter-in-law, Colonel and Jessie Brown of Piney Creek; two grandchildren, Betty Eller and Nancy Miller; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Kennedy cemetery in the Turkey Know Community. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. McKNIGHT
Mrs. Rhumell Pyrtle McKnight, 75, died Saturday evening, Oct. 29, 2005, at her residence. She was born June 11, 1930, in Forsyth County to the late Ina Knowles and Charles William Arthur Pyrtle. She was the widow of James D. McKnight and was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. She graduated with honors from Sedge Garden High School, Union Cross, in 1948 and City Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Winston-Salem, in 1953. She married
James D. McKnight, of Glade Valley, on April 17, 1954. As a registered nurse, she worked for 43 years at Alleghany Memorial Hospital as a staff nurse, as director of nursing and in human resources. She attended Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church for many years and served as a Sunday school teacher. In later years, she attended the First Baptist Church in Jonesville. Mrs. McKnight is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Ralph Carter of Laurinburg and Wanda and Kurt Johnson of Winchester, Tenn.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rudy and Gina McKnight of Glade Valley and Tommy and Misty McKnight of Sparta; a sister, Eva Hampton of Kernersville; a sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Harry Joyner of Pfafftown; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. The funeral service will be held immediately following visitation. CHOATE
Michael Dane Choate, age 49, of 124 Collins Road, Sparta, died Friday evening, October 28, 2005, at his residence. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Choate. He is survived by his wife, April Caudill Choate of the home; a daughter, Dana Choate of Charlotte; two sons, Tyler Choate of Sparta and Madison Choate of Lenoir; his mother and step-father, Peggy Choate Duncan and Dale Duncan of Sparta; two step-children, Daniel and Rachel Caudill of Sparta; and two step-brothers, Tony and Bill Duncan, both of Sparta. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Whitehead~Joines cemetery in the Whitehead Community near Sparta. DUNCAN
Harriette E. Duncan of Warsaw, NC, formerly of Charlotte, NC, died October 23, 2005, in Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, NC. Born June 9, 1935 in Shelby, NC, she was the daughter of the late Dean Franklin Duncan and Emily Logan Duncan. Dr. Duncan graduated from Central High School, Charlotte, NC. She received her undergraduate degree from Winthrop College and completed Dietetic Internship at Commonwealth University of Virginia at Richmond. She received a Masters Degree at UNC, Chapel Hill, and a PhD, at UNC Greensboro, NC. Survivors include a brother, Hugh M. Duncan and wife Anne, of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Dean F. Duncan, Jr. Graveside service will be held Saturday, October 29 at 11 a.m. at Glade Valley Cemetery, Glade Valley, NC. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Warsaw United Methodist Church in Warsaw, NC, where she was a member. Memorials may be made to the Warsaw United Methodist Church, P.O. Mrs. Opal Hartgrove Edwards, age 92, of Sparta, died Sunday evening, October 23, 2005, at the Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Virginia. She was the widow of Robert Page Edwards and was preceded in death by brothers, Joe, Lennie Ray, Clyde and William Hartgrove. She is survived by three daughters, Lois E. Crouse of Concord, Naomi E. Griffith of Cookeville, TN, and Peggy E. Jackson of Athens, GA; two sons, Robert Page Edwards of Easley, SC, and Steven Jeffery Edwards of Decatur, GA; one sister, Rachel Hartgrove Shackelford of Greensboro; five brothers, Ralph Hartgrove of King, Edgar Hartgrove of Elon, NC, and Dean Hartgrove, Dennis Hartgrove and Jimmy Hartgrove, all of King; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 25th at the Sparta First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. MCKNIGHT
Mr. Joseph Franklin “Joe” McKnight, age 62, of 2511 Mountain View Road, Glade Valley, died Thursday morning, October 20, 2005, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin James McKnight. Joe was born in Alleghany County on January 5, 1943. He was of the Baptist Faith and a member of the Sparta Masonic Lodge #423. He was the former owner and operator of Thurmond Apparel. He was an antique car enthusiast, loved motorcycles, especially his Harley, and was a former pilot. He is survived by his wife, Janet Jones McKnight of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Al Crawford of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; a grandson, Joseph Crawford of Ocean Isle Beach; his mother, Mabel Brooks McKnight of Glade Valley; a sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Jimmie Gillespie of Glade Valley; a brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Carol McKnight of Glade Valley; two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Steve Miller of Laurel Springs. Another of the “Greatest Generation,” Mr. Joseph Mack Andrews is lost at age 86. “Mr. Joe” of 56 New Haven Road died Monday October 17, 2005, at his home in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife Maxine Poole Andrews. He is survived by his brother Jim Andrews of Sparta; and three sons and daughters-in-laws, Jim (Butch) Andrews and wife Martha Allen Andrews of Mount Airy, NC, Joseph (Buddy) Andrews JR. and wife JoAnn Roupe Andrews of Willow Springs, NC, and Shawn Andrews and wife Lorrie Bolt Andrews of Sparta, NC. Five granddaughters, one grandson as well as four great-grandsons also survive. The family gives special thanks to Ruby Anders who has always been there when needed and for whose undying help and support, the family is eternally grateful. Mr. Harold Franklin Hawkins, age 62, of 273 Independence Road, Sparta, died Sunday morning, October 16, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by three daughters, Debbie Gentry of Sparta; Debbie Carranza of Troy, NC, and Lydia Hawkins of Johnsonville, SC; a son, Harold Dale “Pete” Hawkins and wife Brandi of Sparta; a sister, Opal Alley and husband Bobby of Summerfield, NC; a brother, Jerry Hawkins and wife Elva of Sparta; 12 grandchildren; one niece; and six nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 19th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Landmark cemetery in the Whitehead Community. Mrs. Sybil Irene Houck Purdum, age 89, of Sparta, died Friday, October 14, 2005, at Sunbridge of Alleghany.She is survived by three daughters, Mary Lou Woodie of Laurel Springs, Linda Lee LeMay of Noblesville, IN, and Judith Lenderman of Covington, GA; two brothers, Orville Houck of Warrensville, and Walter Houck of Laurel Springs; three sisters, Grace Mabe and Winnie Good, both of Sparta, and Earlene Shepherd of Laurel Springs; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 16th, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson. Entombment will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum of Prayer. Mrs. Ethelene Nichols Bennett, age 94, of 95 Grandview Drive, Sparta, died Sunday morning, October 9, 2005, at her home. She was the widow of Thurmond Gwin Bennett, Sr., and was preceded in death by two sons, William Bennett and Thurmond Bennett, Jr. She is survived by two sons, and two daughters-in-law, Walton Bennett, Dennis Bennett and wife Susan, Christa Bennette, all of Sparta; three sisters, Lou Bennett, Mattie Lowe and husband Roy, Maxine Nichols, all of Sparta; three brothers, Clay Nichols, Jack Nichols and wife Louise, Paul Nichols, all of Sparta; six grandchildren, Randy, Doug, Eric, Kevin, Kim and Brooke; and one step-granddaughter, Noelle Stanley; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Robert Lee “Beak” Caudill, age 47, of 214 Bittersweet Lane, Ennice, died Wednesday, November 30, 2005, near his home. He was preceded in death by his father, Thorval Lee Caudill. He is survived by two daughters, Bianca Maria Caudill of Charlotte, and Marcella Elisa Caudill of Sparta; his companion, Michelle Bottomley of Ennice; his mother and step-father, Ruth and Hugh Halsey of Glade Valley; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janie and David Woodle of Sparta, and Linda and Greg Miller of Laurel Springs; two step-brothers, Stephen Halsey of Richmond, Va., and Andy Halsey of Hillsborough; amd several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 3rd, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at the Bittersweet Farm in Ennice.
