Mrs. Goldia Blevins Speeks, age 71, of 181 Little Bridge Lane, Roaring Gap, NC, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005, at her home. She is survived by her husband, Harry Speeks of the home; a daughter, Karen Holton and husband Glenn of Lexington, SC; a son, Stefan Speeks of Jamestown; a granddaughter, Lauren Holton of Lexington, SC; a sister, Loreen Lambert of Jefferson; two brothers, Carl Blevins and wife Rita of Jefferson, and Wayne Blevins of Warrensville; and a special friend, Dot Jones of Jefferson. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 1st, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Antioch United Methodist cemetery at Roaring Gap. Mrs. Cora Lee Holbrook Royall, age 89, of 9921 US Hwy 21 S., Roaring Gap, NC died Saturday morning, November 26, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of William Quincy Royall and was preceded in death by a daughter, Christine Royall; one sister; and six brothers. She was born in Wilkes County on July 17, 1916 to the late, Joseph H. and Lucretia Billings Holbrook and was a member of Elk Spur Baptist Church. She is survived by nine daughters, Lois Huffman and husband, Dr. Monroe Huffman of Purlear, Janet Treffert of Shreveport, LA, Sharon Knight and husband Richard Knight, Libby Bumgarner and husband Fred Bumgarner all of North Wilkesboro, Lee Royall of Dillard, GA, Ali Yandle and husband Paul Yandle of Greensboro, Jean Nelson and husband Ladd Nelson, Dean Royall, all of Wilmington, and Ann Hurd and husband Rod Hurd of Bonsall, CA; two sons, William Quincy Royall, Jr. and wife Peggy Royall of Yadkinville, and Benjamin Franklin Royall and wife Kaye Royall of Sparta; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 30th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Dr. Monroe Huffman will officiate. Burial will follow in the Liberty Knob cemetery near Roaring Gap. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening. Mr. Colonel Clay Brown, Sr., age 84, of 5550 Hwy. 21 N., Sparta, died Saturday morning, November 26, 2005, at his home. He was preceded in death by a son, Colonel Clay Brown, Jr; and five brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Rector Brown of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Cecil Douglas of Sparta; six grandchildren, Mark Sanders and wife Jennifer, Robert Sanders and wife Kelly of Sparta, Renee Sanders of Mooresville, Cole Brown, Dean and Jennifer Otto all of Charlotte and Jessica Brown of Raleigh; four great-grandchildren, Justin Brown of Charlotte, Maci Sanders of Sparta, Emma Grace Otto of Charlotte, and Jacob Brown of Charlotte; four sisters, Eva Billings of Sparta, Louise Paisley and her husband Larry of Winston-Salem, Marie Busic of Piney Creek, and Jessie Delp of Woodlawn, Va; his mother-in-law, Bessie Rector of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 29th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial follow in the Piney Creek Methodist Cemetery. Vella Ruth Mabe McGrady, age 97, of 179 Combs St., died Saturday morning, November 26, 2005, at Sun Bridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sparta. She was the widow of Elder Eli Long and Bill McGrady. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, John Reba Long. She is survived by two special nieces and nephews, Cecil and Dorothy Wyatt of Sparta, and Mary Ruth and Larry Setzer of Laurel Springs; a sister, Rachel Crouse of Sparta; a brother, Opal Mabe and his wife Jackie of Greensboro; five step-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Grace Mabe of Independence VA and Elanore Mabe of Pasadena, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loved ones and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 29th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Antioch cemetery in the Stratford Community. Mr. Roscoe Eldridge Williams, Jr., age 74, of 170 E. Whitehead St. Sparta, died Thursday, November 24, 2005, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Largen Williams; his parents, Roscoe and Ruth Andrews Williams; and a brother, Kenneth Williams. He is survived by two sons, Roscoe (Russell) Williams III and his wife Pat of Sparta, and Jerry Burton Williams and wife Donna of Bel Air, MD; a granddaughter, Crystal Williams of Bel Air, MD; four sisters, Juanita Seal and husband Kirby of Sparta, Edna Joines and husband Mack of Hays, Carol Jean Crouse of Sparta, and Dorothy Roberts and husband Michael of Sparta; three brothers, Carl Williams and wife Jean, Johnny Williams and wife Joyce, and Raymond Williams and wife Louise, all of Sparta; a sister-in-law, Doris Williams of Abingdon, MD; a step-daughter, Pamela Cline and her husband Mark of Christiansburg, VA; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, November 27th, at the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church in the Stratford Community. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Timothy Dwayne Shatley, age 30 of Grassy Creek, NC, died Sunday, November 20, 2005. Mr. Shatley was born in Galax, VA, on August 13, 1975, to Allen Shatley and Inez Reeves Shatley. Mr. Shatley enjoyed fishing in his spare time. Mr. Shatley was also attending Wilkes Community College where he was studying culinary arts. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Ella Bedsaul Edwards; a sister, Shirley Wooten; and a brother, Joe Bill Edwards. She is survived by her husband, Edd Mack Wooten of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Kermit Wood of State Road; two grandchildren, Brent and Frankie Southard of Elkin, and Brad and Crystal Wood of Franklinville; four great-grandchildren; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Floyd Sexton of Sparta, Kathy and Everett Shaw of Glade Valley, Emma Lee and Thomas Rector of Ennice, Venaree and Bob G. Billy Carroll Johnson, age 63, of 2283 Shawtown Road, Glade Valley, NC, died Friday evening, November 18, 2005, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Beck Johnson; a sister, Jewell Gaye Moxley; and a brother, Robert Mack Johnson. He was born in Alleghany County, August 21, 1942, to Claude and Mae Chappell Johnson. He professed a hope in Christ and was baptized in First Baptist of Sparta. Billy loved the outdoors, playing with his grandchildren, being with family and friends and sports, especially Dallas Cowboy football. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Annette Johnson of Yadkinville; a daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Terry Evans of Glade Valley; three grandchildren, Ashley and Abbey Johnson and Lindsey Evans; two sisters, Emma Lee Edwards of Ennice, and Reba Vaughn of Winston-Salem; a brother, Boyd Johnson of Ennice; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Monday, November 21st at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Glade Creek Cemetery. Viola Irene Van Hoy, age 79, of 1059 Bakers Ridge Road, Piney Creek, died at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Levi and Flossie Ashley Van Hoy. She is survived by a sister, Blanche Van Hoy Hines of Winston-Salem; four nephews, Ronnie, Richard Hines, Walter and Danny Hines, all of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 19th, at the Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Mrs. Retha Lucille Brooks McGrady, age 75, of 2564 S. Laurel Fork Road, Laurel Springs, died Tuesday evening, November 15, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of William Brice McGrady. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Barry Sturgill of Sparta; three sons, Rudy McGrady of Laurel Springs, Stan and Linda McGrady of Sparta, and William and Barbara McGrady of Ennice; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Iris Gambill of Sparta, Ruby Hill of Statesville and Ruth Hutchens of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Charlie Henry Crouse, age 88, of 250 Misty Lane, Glade Valley, NC, passed away Sunday morning, November 13, 2005, at his residence. He was born July 26, 1917, to John and Cessie Crouse. He was a Veteran of WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and three sisters. He will be missed by a long time loving and caring provider of the home, Betty Wood. Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles James and Mariann Crouse of New York; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jane and Leonard Becraft of Brookville, MD, Mary and Bill Watson of Fulton, MD, Grace and Alan Sines of Laurel, MD, Evelyn and Wilton Prest of Sparta, NC, Dawn and Steve Youmans of Beltsville, MD, and Shawnai Blevins of Galax, VA; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
