Wilma Christine Witherspoon Vannoy, age 80 of Jefferson, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Vannoy was born March 18, 1924 in Ashe County to the late James and Effie Witherspoon. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Vannoy, a daughter; Penny Christine Vannoy, two brothers; Lucius and Zeb Witherspoon. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and also a Sunday school teacher. Her many activities include being a WMU member and a volunteer with Ashe Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Friendship Baptist Church. Rev. David Grinnell, Rev. Mike Hamby and Rev. Johnny Blevins will officiate. Burial will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 till 9:00 PM, Wednesday, May 19th at Friendship Baptist Church. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to: Friendship Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Lois Koontz, PO Box 70, Jefferson, NC 28640 or Ashe Memorial Hospital, 200 Hospital Ave., Jefferson, NC 28640. Mrs. Vannoy is survived by: Sons: Eddie, Mark and Tim Vannoy all of Jefferson, NC Brothers: Lloyd and John Witherspoon both of Jefferson, NC Sister-in-laws: Lucy Lyalls, Pansy Collier, Faye Sharpe and husband Burl, Jean Lewis and husband Sam and Opal Martin and husband Albert 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Ola Victoria Houck Grubb, age 84 of Todd, NC, died Thursday, May 27, 2004 at the Segraves Care Center. Mrs. Grubb was born May 24, 1920 in Ashe County to the late Lee and Hessie Houck. In addition to her parents, her husband, Lloyd Grubb preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 29, 2004 at the Zion United Methodist Church. Rev. Pricilla Walker and Rev. Dr. Jim Rash will officiate. Burial will follow in the Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 till 2:00 PM prior to the service Saturday. Mrs. Grubb is survived by: Sons: Gwyn and George Grubb both of West Jefferson, NC and Gene Grubb of Fleetwood, NC Daughters: Glenda Binkley of Clemmons, NC, Gloria Walters of Vilas, NC and Gelene Ham of Todd, NC Brothers: Wint Houck of Lenoir, NC and Milt Houck of Todd, NC 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. Gordon Jasper Lewis age 89 of Todd, NC died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at his home. Mr. Lewis was born on November 21, 1914 in West Jefferson, NC to James and Marcia Trivette Lewis. He served in the United States Navy, serving in World War II. Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 4, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. John Gentry, Rev. Fieldon Sherman Brooks age 86 of West Jefferson, NC died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at the Ashe Living Center. Mr. Brooks was born on January 19, 1918 in Ashe County, NC to Fieldon Franklin and Mary Ellen Poe Brooks. He was ordained as a Baptist Minister at Sugar Tree Baptist Church. He preached at Sugar Tree Baptist Church for five years. Mr. Brooks drove a motor coach for the Southern Coach Company. He retired from Duke Power Company where he drove a coach at Duke University. Mr. Brooks was currently a member at Bristol Baptist Church. Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Roark Brooks. Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 11, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Billy Joe Blevins and Rev. Jim Greer will officiate.
