Horse Shoe - Daniel Scott Decker, 63, of Horse Shoe, died
Sunday, April 16, 2006 after a brief illness. He was a native of Ft. Wayne, IN, but spent most of his adult life in Homewood, IL. He lived in Horse Shoe for the past three years, enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Boyd Decker, and his two sons: David Douglas Decker of Macomb, IL and Brian Thomas Decker of Asheville. He also has two sisters, Diane Decker Sakmyster of Cincinnati, OH and Deborah Sue Decker of Ogden, UT.
He was educated at Indiana University, receiving a B.A. in Art, a M.S. in Art Education, and an Ed.D. in Art Education with a concentration in Media. He started his career as an art teacher, then he became a professor at the University of Maryland and later the Director of Media at the University of South Dakota. Finally, he joined the business community serving as personal development and management trainer for several utility companies.
Throughout his life, he was an outdoor enthusiast. He was a Boy Scout who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He loved hiking, canoeing and kayaking, and was a supporter of environmental protection groups. He was also a lifelong artist, painting in both watercolors and acrylics, making pottery, designing stained glass, and working in photography. However, his greatest skill was the ability to make friends with everyone he met.
In lieu of a memorial service, the family asks that friends and relatives commit their thoughts and stories about Dan to writing and send them to Diane Sakmyster, 5716 West Fork Road, Cincinnati, OH 45247, so that she may compile a Memory Book for Linda, David and Brian. George Richard "Heavy" Brady
May 1, 1952 - April 25, 2005
Bryson City - George “Richard” (Heavy) Brady, 52, passed away Monday, April 25, 2005, at his residence following a period of declining health.
A native of Buncombe County, he had resided in Bryson City for the past 1 1/2 years. He was a member of The Old Rugged Cross Church.
He was the son of Patricia Capps Mortier and the late George G. Brady. He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Richard W. Mortier, Jr., and two brothers: William Roy Johnson and Larry Michael Mortier.
In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Kathleen Hawk Brady of the home; his son, Charles Richard (Bubba) Brady of Weaverville; three daughters: Carrie Brady Castillo and husband Roman of Weaverville, Christy Cedillo of Asheville, and Candi (Zack) Brady of Weaverville; two children of the home: Zaybayon George and David (Munchie) Chiltoski; a step-son, Larry Stump of Fort Bragg, NC; two step-daughters: Tina Stalnaker and husband Duane of Stedman, NC, and Jamie Chiltoski and husband David of Bryson City; four grandchildren: Sabina Isabella Cedillo, Duane and Paige Stalnaker, and Danita Chiltoski; a sister, Tina Mortier of Weaverville; two brothers: David Mortier of Weaverville and Donald Mortier of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 Thursday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of his daughter, Carrie Castillo, 25 Windsor Drive, Weaverville.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
James H. Hendrix Jr.
April 10, 1930 - April 25, 2005
Asheville - James Hubert Hendrix, Jr., 75, passed away Monday, April 25, 2005 at Memorial Mission Hospital following a short illness.
A native and resident most of his life in Buncombe County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired in September, 1972 after 21 years of service from the U.S. Army.
Following his retirement he worked at the Holiday Inn – Airport and as a Security Guard with Burns Security Company.
He was the son of the late James Hubert Hendrix, Sr., and Missouri Kansas Hollifield Hendrix.
Surviving are his special friend and caregiver for over 13 years, Winona Clark; his sister, Louise, sister-in-law, Barbara and several nieces & nephews all of Asheville.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Carl A. Frady officiating.
Military honors will be conducted by the Erwin High School Jr. ROTC.
No formal visitation is scheduled, however, friends may visit at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
Sally Compton Plemmons
March 16, 1913 - April 23, 2005
Asheville - Sally Compton Plemmons - 92, of 38 Dellwood Street died
Saturday April 23, 2005 at the Solace Center.
A native of Hardinsbury, KY. she had lived in Asheville since 1944. She was a retired practical nurse and a member of Westwood Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School in all different age groups and helped with Vacation Bible School and the Children’s Church. She was a daughter of the late Marvin and Ida Macy Compton and the wife of the late Ellis Orr Plemmons.
Surviving are her sisters, Mary Odom of Asheville and Dorothy Taylor of Oldsmar, FL. and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday at Westwood Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Baird and Mr. G. B. Pressley officiating.
Burial will be in the Newfound Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Sunday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

Larry Patrick O'Kelley
September 8, 1962 - April 20, 2005
Asheville - Larry Patrick O’Kelley, 42, of 100 Peachtree Road, Apt. # 20, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital of North Carolina following an extended illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He attended Sweeten Creek Baptist Church.
He was the son of Hugh D. O’Kelley of Asheville, and Nancy Jenkins Woods and husband, William of Lincolnton.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Patricia Kay Roth and husband, Dana of Asheville; his brother, James D. O’Kelley and wife, Linda of Fairview; his maternal grandmother, Pearl E. Jenkins of Fairview; three nieces, Brandi Lytle, Jessica O’Kelley and Kaitlin Roth; and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
