James Melvin Hyatt

Candler - James Melvin Hyatt, 81, of 191 Childers Rd. died
Thursday, January 6, 2004 at his residence.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a retired tree surgeon, a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Mr. Hyatt was the son of the late James Raymond and Roseanner Moody Hyatt and was the husband of the late Ruby Joyce Wallace Hyatt who died
in 1977.
Surviving are his son, Marvin Hyatt of the home; daughters, Joyce Durham and husband Jerry Sr. of Lawrenceville, VA, Sue Hyatt of NC and Nancy Lawing and husband Bruce of Leicester; sister, Carrie Mae Stevens of Alabama; brother, Junior Hyatt of Candler; grandchildren, Jason Lawing of Leicester, Shane Brown of Asheville, Anthony Durham, Jr. and wife Melissa of Petersburg, VA, Tammy Crawford and husband Chris of Dinwiddie, VA and Angela Yvonne Hyatt; great grandchildren, Tayla Brown of Asheville, Evan and Tyler Brown of Washington state, Megan Crawford of Dinwiddie, VA and Aaron Matthew Durham of Petersburg, VA.
Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Saturday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Rice officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Shane Brown, Floyd Austin, Ralph Hyatt, Charles Mosley, Jerry Anthony Durham Sr. and Jerry Anthony Durham, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
William Harrell Gass
March 24, 1943 - December 31, 2004
Asheville - William Harrell Gass, 61, of 3 Lamb Avenue, died
unexpectedly Friday December 31, 2004 at Memorial Mission Hospital.
A native of Tyrrell County, he had lived all his life in Asheville. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and had been employed by Cranston Print Works of 30 years. He was a son of the late James Horace and Anna Lou Owens Gass and was also preceded in death by a sister, Naomi Hall and a brother, Daniel Gass.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Gass of the home; daughters, Marketta Rogers and Karen Gass both of Asheville; grandchildren, Crystal and Travis Rogers and Cody and Kaitlyn Gass; sisters, Kate Sherlin, Jennie Sue Price and Mary Maxwell; brothers, Buddy, Roy, Jerry and J.C. Gass and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Alf Miller officiating.
Burial will be in the Morning Star Cemetery
in Haywood County.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.
John Henry Towe
February 28, 1921 - January 7, 2005
Asheville - John Henry Towe, 83, of 199 Eliada Home Rd. died
Friday. January 7, 2005 at the Brian Center of Weaverville following a short illness.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe Co. Mr. Towe retired from Sarah Scott Furniture Co. and was a furniture upholserer for over 38 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of W.W. II, son of the late Benjamin Harrison Towe and Addie Ann Jones Towe and the husband of Elizabeth Julia “Lib” Turbyfill Towe who died
April 14, 2004.
Surviving are his sister, Ruby Hensley of Ocala, FL; nephews, Keith Turbyfill and wife, Suzanne of Leicester and Gregory Turbyfill and wife, Teresa of Canton; neice, Pam Justice and husband, Jack of Asheville and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Benson officiating.
Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery
with military graveside rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Elsie Marie Cook Stewart
October 11, 1919 - December 26, 2004
Asheville - Elsie Marie Cook Stewart, 85, of 96 Madeline Avenue, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital after an extended illness.
A native of Whitesville, WV, she graduated from the Southland Bible Institute in Pikeville, KY in 1948. She continued her studies at the Philadelphia School Of the Bible and the Biblical School of Theology in Hatfield, PA. After completion of her studies, she was employed as an office secretary for the European Evangelistic Crusade from 1949 through 1957, and then was employed with Gospel Projects of Philadelphia, PA, which later moved to Asheville, from 1958 to 1982. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where she taught the Ladies Bible Class from 1978 to 1996.
Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of the late William Ellsworth and Bida Jarrell Cook, and was married
in August, 1953 to David B. Stewart, who passed away on May 26, 1967.
Surviving are her sister, Nell Toney of Racine, WV; her brothers: Rev. Arnold Cook and wife Ethel of Stoneville, NC, and Bill S. Cook and wife Jean of Hendersonville; her dear and special friend, Betty Weikle of Asheville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church, with the Revs. Randy Bray, Robert Doom and Arnold Cook officiating.
Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park in Candler.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
Artie Poole Derting
August 17, 1904 - December 27, 2004
Columbus - Artie Belle Poole Derting, 100, of 1938 Fox Mountain Road died
Monday, December 27, 2004 at the Pisgah Manor Health Care Center following a short illness.
A native of Rhea County, Tennessee she had resided in Columbus for the past 20 years.
Mrs. Derting was a former elementary school teacher and piano and voice teacher and a member of the Tryon Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She was the daughter of the late Lorenzo Dow Poole and Minnie Alice Burchard Poole and wife of the late Hubert Francis Derting. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Floyd Poole.
Surviving are her daughters, Kay Ritchie of Egnar, CO., Lila Morgan of Columbus, Mary Jane Graves and husband, Ted of Candler, Anna Jean Allen and husband, Paul of Kenmore, WA and Tommie Sue Burchard of Dayton, TN., 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held at a later date at Ogden Road Seventh-day Adventist Church in Dayton, TN.
