Thomas Columbus Ray Sr.
January 16, 1945 - December 26, 2004

Asheville - Thomas Columbus Ray, Sr., 59, of 3909 Sweeten Creek Road, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2004 at Memorial mission Hospital after a period of declining health.

A native of Buncombe County, Mr. Ray had lived for a period of years in El Paso, TX before returning to Buncombe County.

He was the son of the late Frederick Uranus and Alma Edna Rice Ray. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Steve Ray and Joe Ray.

Surviving are his wife, Ozelle Schultz Ray of the home; his son, Thomas Columbus Ray II and his wife Linda of Weaverville; his two daughters: Tammy Beddingfild and her husband Robert of Swannanoa, and Monica Travis of Asheville; his grandchildren: Sydney Ray and Joshua and Shaun Travis; his brother, Frank Ray of El Paso, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday at Bee Tree Cemetery icon on Long Branch Road, with the Rev Charles Swann officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Kidney Associates, 10 McDowell St., Asheville, NC 28806.

Anders-Rice Funeral Home is assisting the Ray family with funeral arrangements.

Lydia Louise Flynn Norris
February 23, 1926 - December 20, 2004

Asheville - Lydia Louise Flynn Norris, 78, of 11 Joan Way died icon Monday, December 20, 2004 at her residence.

A native of Henderson County she had lived for most of her life in Buncombe County. She was a member of Georgetown Baptist Church.

Mrs. Norris was the daughter of the late John Baxter and Ina Delilah Summey Flynn. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Maude Flynn Griffin and her brothers, Lunnie Henry Flynn and Lloyd Thomas Flynn.

Surviving are her husband, Rex. O. Norris of the home; daughters, Joan W. Taylor and husband Rick of Asheville and Maria Norris Henson and husband Lawrence of Candler; son, Mike Williams and wife Rita of Asheville; sister, Marie Flynn Scarborough of Hendersonville; grandchildren, Jonathan Taylor, Shane Henson and Cameron Olin Flynn Henson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Lee Davis and Jerry Young officiating. Burial will be in Patty’s Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steve Parker, Terry Teague, Jeff Whitley, Jason Littrell, Mark Elliott, Darin Austin, Brian Wallace and Carlos Pelaez.

The family will receive friends from noon until 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

David William Franks
February 15, 1980 - December 12, 2004

Asheville - David William Franks, 24, of 9 Frith Drive died icon Sunday December 12, 2004 at Memorial Mission Hospital.

A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. David was a member of Central United Methodist Church and attended Biltmore Baptist Church. He was a 1998 honor graduate of T.C. Roberson High School, attended Appalachian State University and currently a student at A-B Tech.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Earl Franks.

Surviving are his parents, Thomas Dwight Franks and Ann Henderson Franks of Asheville; brother, Kevin Michael Franks of Asheville; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Henderson of Asheville; paternal grandmother, Lois Parrott of Hayesville.

Memorial services will be held at 3:30 P.M. Thursday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Pastor David Spray officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following services at the funeral home.

Graveside services at Forest Lawn Memorial Park will be held prior to the Memorial Service.

Memorials may be made to: Biltmore Baptist Church in the name of David Franks, 35 Clayton Road, Arden, N.C. 28704.

Robena Sams Metcalf
November 12, 1933 - December 11, 2004

Asheville - Robena Sams Metcalf, 71, went home to be with Jesus Saturday, December 11, 2004 at her residence following a brief illness.

A native of Madison County she had resided in Buncombe County for most of her life. She retired from Sears in 1992 after 25 years of service and was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Friendship Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Metcalf was the daughter of the late Chonis H. and Dessie Rice Sams. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ernest and Emerson Sams.

Surviving are her husband, Charles “Charlie” Metcalf of the home; daughters, Nancy Metcalf Lott and husband Neal of Horse Shoe and Debbie Metcalf Coddington and husband Jeff of Asheville; special dog, Tiffany; sister, Minnie Brown of Weaverville; brothers, Edward Sams of Rockville, VA and Ellis Sams of Haughton, LA; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. David Tucker and Ken Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mae Payne
July 5, 1918 - December 13, 2004

Asheville - Mae Payne, 86, joined her heavenly family Monday, December 13, 2004 with her loved ones at her side.

She was born icon in Madison County on July 5, 1918 to the late Frank and Mollie Shelton Davis, but lived her adult life in Buncombe County. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Reagan Roberts and Daitus Payne, sisters: Elsie Hopkins, Robbie Willis, and Sadie Wilson, and a brother and sister in infancy.

She was a homemaker and one of the best biscuit makers around. She loved to sit on her porch, drink coffee, and feed the birds and squirrels. She was Mamaw to the young people in the neighborhood.

Survivors include her daughter, Claudine Suttles-Hyatt and husband Timothy Hyatt of Liecester; sons: Stallard Roberts of Charlotte, Charles Roberts and wife Judy of White Pine, TN, and Stewart Roberts and wife Donna of Liecester; brother Bob Davis of Havre De Grace, MD; grandchildren: Stephen and Angela Suttles, Mark and Rachael Roberts, Kristy Roberts, Charles Roberts, Tina Landi, Erika Roberts, and Bradley Roberts; eight great-grandchildren; best friend and neighbor, Belle Arrington; and daughter-in-law Mary Ann Roberts.

Graveside services will be held 2 PM Wednesday in Green Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-2 PM Wednesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of her daughter, Claudine, 41 Dix Creek Road #2, Leicester.

The family would like to say a big “Thank You” to the staff at Pisgah Manor. The CNA’s and nurses are great.

Robert Leonard "Bobby" Townsend Jr.
February 26, 1949 - December 8, 2004

Asheville - Robert Leonard “Bobby” Townsend, Jr., 55, was raised up to be with his Lord Wednesday, December 8, 2004.

A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was self-employed as a paint contractor, a professional dancer, was active in the ministry of the Unity Ministry for Jesus Christ, and was a Vietnam Veteran in the US Army.

He was the son of the late Robert Leonard Townsend, Sr. and Elsie R. Townsend.

Family members are his wife, Sandra Townsend, whom he married icon July 19, 1985 at Basilica of Saint Lawrence; four sons: Jason Wallace and wife April, Robert Townsend, III and wife Melissa, Joshua Townsend and wife Dawn, and Keith Sheppard and wife Autumn, all of Asheville; five beautiful granddaughters: Haley and Skyler Townsend, Joscelyn Wallace and Jade and Amber Sheppard; sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Roger Edwards of Asheville; sister and brother-in-law, Joanne and Thad Coates of Asheville; and sister-in-law Barbara Aulseybrook of Florida.

Honored also are his uncle, Rev. and Mrs. George Roberts of Asheville; friends, Daniel Miller and family; Jamie Bourne; William H. Rice; Martha Penka; and Martha Papp; honorary brother, Michael Adams, of the home; covenant partner friend, Bruce Sprouse of Alexander; and nieces and nephews: Dale and Ramona Edwards, Jon Ledford, Chris and Jackie Height, and Carson Humphries.

Funeral services in his honor and giving glory and honor to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Pastor Bobby Benson, Pastor Willie Warren, and Father Will Thomas officiating. Rev. Bob Mashburn, Brother Thom Murphy and friends will be in charge of the message in music.

Burial will be in the Green Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM Saturday at the Funeral Home.

Flowers and donations for the family are welcome.
