Charles Burke Woody
September 18, 1917 - February 17, 2002
Asheville - Charles Burke Woody, 84, of 76 Deaver Park Circle, went to be with The Lord Sunday February 17 2002 at the Oaks of Sweeten Creek.
A native of Spruce Pine, he had lived in Buncombe County most of his life. He retired from Asheville Steel Co. and worked for Eaton Corp. for 10 years after retirement.
He was the son of the late Jerry SEYMORE and Bertha Wyatt Woody and the husband of the late Hazel Amalie Taylor Woody.
Surviving are his daughter Dena Singleton and husband Jerry of Candler; son, Charles Woody and wife Tammy of Candler; sister, Katie Birmingham of Maggie Valley; grandsons, Jerry Dean Singleton and Hunter Woody; great-grandchildren, Christy and Joshua Singleton.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Revs. Steve Smith and Wade Hall officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.
Rev. Alton Rathbone
October 30, 1916 - February 26, 2002
Candler - Rev. Alton Rathbone, 85, of Warren’s Creek went to be with the Lord on February 26, 2002 at his home attended by his wife Lucille and son Jack.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired from American Enka Corp. and was a Long time pastor of several churches including South Turkey Creek Baptist Church, Fairmont Baptist Church and was an evangelist for many years. He was a son of the late Benjamin W. and Sarah Camoline Rathbone.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Lucille O. Rathbone of the home; sons, Jerald, David and Jack Rathbone all of Candler; daughters, Geraldine Gosnell, Linda Cabe both of Candler and Judy Roberts of Leicester; 22 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pa Paw will be missed by all.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Bennie Wade and brother in Christ Bill Bryson officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.
His family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Velma Johnson "buz" Catlin
August 16, 1914 - February 16, 2002
Arden - Velma Clarke Johnson “Buz” Catlin, 87, of 222 Glenn Bridge Rd. Apt #e-39 died
Saturday February 16, 2002 at the Laurels of Summit Ridge.
A native of Bobbit, N.C., she resided in Meadville, Penn.. prior to moving to the Hendersonville area in 1978. She was the former Aquatic Director at the YMCA in Meadville, Penn.. and was a world class swimmer and instructor for over 60 years.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph William and Dora Dotson Duke Johnson and the wife of the late Henry Livingston Catlin, Jr. who died
January 25, 1991.
Surviving are her sons, H. Douglas Catlin of Fairview, William Joseph Catlin and John Livingston Catlin both of Meadville, Penn..; daughter, Diann C. Dewberry of Arden; 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Antone “Tony” Abbott officiating.
Burial will be in the Gashes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M, Monday at the funeral home.

Margaret Lou Peterson
December 25, 1909 - February 17, 2002
Asheville - Margaret Lou Nanney Peterson, 92, formerly of 41 Virginia Avenue died
Sunday, February 17, 2002 at the McDowell County Hospital following a brief illness.
A native of McDowell County. She had resided in Buncombe County from 1912 to her returning to McDowell County in 1997.
She was a retired nurse and a former member of Haw Creek Christian Church.
Mrs. Peterson was a daughter of the late Willard Cordell and Harriett Josephine Calloway Nanney and was the wife of Norman Peterson who died
in 1978.
Surviving are her sister in law, Amanda Nanney of Black Mountain and several nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services were held Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Dean Huggins officiating.
Anders-Rice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Robert Glenn King
December 1, 1944 - April 6, 2002
Candler - Robert Glenn King, 57, of 2 Jugtown Road, a devoted and loving Husband, Father and PaPaw went to be with the Lord Saturday, April 6, 2002 at the Asheville V.A. Medical Center following an extended illness.
A native of Buncombe County. Mr. King had resided in Darlington, S.C. prior to returning to Buncombe County in 1990.
He was a truck driver and attended Happy Valley Church.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Campaign, Army Commendation, Good Conduct and Bronze Star Medals.
He was the son of Ralph C. King of Candler and the late Bernice King. Mr. King was also preceded in death by a brother, Ricky King.
Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Teresa Edwards King of the home; daughter, Janet Edwards of Nashville; son, Robert W. King of Moncks Corner, S.C.; grandchildren, Brittany, Breann and Derik; sister, Hazel Rathbone of Asheville; brothers, Frank King of Dillsboro and Jerry King of Iraan, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Western N.C. State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain with the Rev. Russell Gillespie officiating.
Military rites will be conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 PM Tuesday at Anders-Rice funeral home.
