Monday, November 11, 2002 at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Jakey S. and Mary Brown Cole and was the husband of the late Bonnie Sue Shipman Cole who died
March 12, 2002.
Surviving are his sons, Robert C. Cole of Asheville and Francis Cole, Jr. of the home; sister, Reva Cole Franks of Asheville; brothers, Robert Cole of Alexandria, VA and Jakey Cole, Jr. of Asheville; grandchildren, Valerie Ann Cole and Christopher Cole; 2 great grandchildren.
Mr. Cole’s family will receive friends at his home.
Herbert Elmore Elkins Sr.
March 13, 1893 - November 11, 2002
Asheville - Herbert Elmore Elkins, Sr., 109, of 9 Mountain View Road, died
Monday November 11, 2002.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He was an electrical contractor for over 75 years, was a WW I Army Veteran and was of the Baptist faith.
He was a son of the late William Cornelius and Finetti Buckner Elkins. He was the husband of Florence Bradford Kent Elkins for 75 years, who died
June 14, 1997 and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Kent Stanley and a sister, Bessie Elkins Noland.
Surviving are his daughters, Edith Cecile Travis and husband, Ray of Candler, Betty Jean Williams of Asheville and Joyce Gwendolyn Crisp and husband, Landford of Skyland; son Herbert Elmore Elkins, Jr. and wife, Opal of Candler; 15 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 42 great great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Aaron Phillips and Mr. Ray Travis officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Edith Woody Young
February 9, 1922 - November 7, 2002
Asheville - Edith Virginia Woody Young, 80, formerly of 22 Oakley Dogwood Drive died
Thursday November 7, 2002.
A native of Madison County, she had resided in Buncombe County most of her life and was a member of Grassy Branch Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Hal Burton and Georgia Haynes Woody and the wife of the late Otha Paul Young, Sr.
Surviving are her sons, Rev. Paul Young, Jr. of Bristol, Tn. and Dale Ledbetter of Asheville; Daughter, Vicky Jednak of Bradenton, Fl.; sisters, Melba W. Williams and Walene Treadway both of Asheville; brothers, Hayden M. Woody of Ann Arbor, Mi. and C.R. Woody of Garden City Mi.; 8 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory with the Rev. Paul Young, Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
Wallace Clay McDonald
February 29, 1924 - November 14, 2002
Arden - Wallace Clay McDonald, 78, of 3 Muirfield Place died
Thursday, November 14, 2002 at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System.
A native of Cherokee County, NC. He had lived most of his life in Buncombe County. He was an accountant for the U.S. Postal Service, a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church, former member of Montreat Scottish Bagpipe Band, as a bass drummer and was an U.S. Army veteran serving in WW II and Korean Conflict.
He was a son of the late Este Byron and Bessie Hembree McDonald. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey Moore McDonald; brothers, Sheridan, Jack, Dan and Bill McDonald.
Surviving are his wife, Fran Hamilton McDonald of the home; daughters, Sandra Smith and husband, Jim of Asheville, Tammy Church and husband, Tom of Black Mountain and Cindy Penland and husband, Joe of Asheville; son, Marty McDonald and wife, Brenda of Asheville; grandsons, Jason Smith, John Russell and Jake Penland; brother, Bayless McDonald of Ashland City, TN and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Revs. Randy Melton, David Warren and Andy Scott officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery
with military rites conducted by the Buncombe County Council Veterans Memorial Team.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Robert David Bonham
July 21, 1946 - November 9, 2002
Asheville - Robert David Bonham, 56, of the Aston Park Towers, died
Saturday November 9, 2002 at his residence.
A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a former member of the National Guard and he was of the Baptist faith. He was a son of the late Robert John and Carrie Fox Bonham.
Surviving are his Sister, Brenda Doan of Asheville; Brother, Michael Bonham of Asheville; Nephew, Steven Doan and Nieces, Karen Doan and Kim Steppe.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday at Sluder Cemetery
with the Rev. Keith Watkins officiating.
The family will be at the home of his Sister, Brenda Doan at 220 Macedonia Road.
Aleane Newman Butler
May 11, 1918 - November 21, 2002
Asheville - Aleane Newman Butler, 84, of Givens Estate ended her life’s journey on November 21, 2002 at the Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center.
A native of Henderson County, she was the daughter of the late John Walter and Ida Sarepta Orr Newman of Hendersonville and was the devoted wife of 53 years to the late William Leon Butler.
Aleane was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star Biltmore Chapter #38 and had worked at Tingles Restaurant in Asheville and later with Ed Y. Sweet Income Tax service in Kannapolis. She was a volunteer with Tax Counciling for the Elderly.
She traveled with her husband for over 25 years following his profession as a Boilermaker all along the east coast. During her travels Aleane always planted flowers which would grow and bloom to her delight and enjoyment of her neighbors. They retired to Arden, NC and her yard overflowed with azaleas, snowball bushes and hostas. She enjoyed sharing cuttings of her abundant garden with her family and friends. These family and friend’s yards continue to grow and bloom as a reminder of her lovingly shared plants. Aleane knitted baby blankets for three generations. These beautiful blankets are being passed onto future generations who will also be wrapped in their loving warmth along with the memory of the woman who made them. Aleane’s blue ribbon chocolate was a rich sweet treat for all her friends. She had many more talents, a few of which included drawing, music, and handicrafts.
Her life was devoted to caring for her husband and nurturing her family. Aleane’s family will miss her and remember the many details of her life that made her such a special and endearing Mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is also preceded in death by her sister, Lois N. Mason, wife of Fred C. Mason.
Surviving are her daughters, Janet Butler-Stephens and husband Robert T. Stephens of Raleigh, NC, and Karen Butler-Sitton and husband Jerry E. Sitton of Asheville; grandsons, Marc T. Emond of Arden, NC and Jerry Sitton, Jr. of Ellijay, GA; sisters, Ruby N. Hood wife of the late Mike Hood of East Flat Rock, NC, and Carolyn N. Mason wife of the late Robert C. Mason of Hendersonville; brother, Harry Newman and wife Jessie Laughter Newman of Hendersonville, NC.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Fulk, Jr., Rev. Ed Hillman, and the Eastern Star Biltmore Chapter #38 officiating. Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
