RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Clara Summers Bailey Jackson, of 563 Baber Road, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.

SHELBY - Mr. Alvin Freeman Jr., 43, of 516 Booker St., died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Billy Joe Mode, 63, of 232 Chase Drive, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital in Tryon.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Ralph Roscoe and Siltanie Bennett Mode. He was a retired supervisor with Duke Power Company, a veteran of the Army, a member of Glenwood Baptist Church, and Rutherford County REACT.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Marlene Mode Scruggs.
He is survived by his wife, Ozelle T. Burgess-Mode; three daughters, Melody Evans and Myra Goodwin, both of Ellenboro, and Melinda DeVoss of Bostic; two step daughters, Debra Waters of Forest City and Paula Harris of Pickens, S.C.; a step son, Billy Tessenair of Forest City; and a sister, Vonnie Mauney of Sylvania, Ga.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home with the Revs. Charlie Blackwell and Cecil Lovelace officiating.
Burial will follow at the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.

Julius Murray
BOSTIC - Mr. Julius Edgar Murray, 80, of Engineer Road, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at Oak Grove Health Care Center.
Born in Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Alexander and Emma Hoyle Murray. He was a retired farmer and textile worker. He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient, having been wounded in the Battle of the Bulge.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Rumfelt Murray; two daughters, Colonel Joyce Jolly of Wurzberg, Germany and Susan Greene of Landrum, S.C.; two brothers, Reid Murray of Boiling Springs and Jasper Murray of Shelby; four sisters, Ethel Queen and Letha Smith, both of Bostic, Ruby Auten of Gastonia and Catherine Hollifield of Eastover, S.C.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, with the Revs. Richard Bass and Charles Battle officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Mount Lebabon Baptist Church Cemetery.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Sarah Walker Clayton, 80, of 344 Chase High Road, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at her home.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Edmond Spurgin and Mattie Mae Trout Walker. She was a homemaker and a member of Providence United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Clayton.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Treva Clayton and William "Ditney" and Diane Clayton, all of Forest City; a daughter, Carolyn Clayton of Forest City; a brother, E.S. Walker Jr. of Forest City; a sister, Doris Smith of Forest City; five grandchildren, James Holland, Sarah Holland, Stephanie Taylor, Sonya Clayton and Ted Clayton; three great-grandchildren, Steven Holland, Kyle Lancaster, and Kimberly Holland; and two step great-grandchildren, Amber Holland and Alicia Boston.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. Morris Byers and Brian Melton officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sandy Mush Fire Department.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Ms. Carletty McDaniel, 66, of 109 N. Sims St., died Friday, May 19, 2000, at White Oak Manor of Shelby.
A native of Iredell County, she was the daughter of the late Willard Dean McDaniel. She was a member of Boyce Memorial ARP Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by her mother, Goldie Ostrum McDaniel of Kings Mountain; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and John Grant of Kings Mountain; a brother, Mike McDaniel of Kings Mountain; and five grandchildren, Richard Latta, Trevor Latta, Daniel Latta, Steven Grant and Brianna Grant, all of Kings Mountain.
A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Petersen officiating.

SHELBY - Mr. Roscoe B. Staley, 84, of 809 E. Graham St., died Friday, May 19, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Wilkes County, he was born on April 28, 1916, the son of the late John and Dolly Whittington Staley. A retired salesman of Belknap Hardware & Manufacturing Co. since 1982, he was also a member of Central United Methodist Church. He served in the Navy during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Allan Staley.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Shomate Staley; a son and two daughters-in-law, Paul M. and Toinette P. Staley of Lynchburg, Va., and Sherry Staley of Laurens, S.C.; a daughter, Sara L. Staley of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Robert Payne Staley, Emily Cameron Staley, Eleanor Elizabeth Staley and Catherine Whittington Staley.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Carl Johnson and Dr. Joe Reeves officiating.
