STANLEY - Mrs. Patty Dover, 60, of 7292 S. Little Egypt Road, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at her home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Mitchell Allen.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Dover; a daughter, Angela Dover; a son, John Dover Jr.; and a brother, David Allen. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Sandy and Bobby Canipe of Stanley; her mother, Kathleen Wheeler Allen of Shelby; two brothers, Dean Allen and James Allen, both of Stanley; two sisters, Peggy Correll of Stanley and Delilla Buff of Sherrills Ford; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Grover with the Revs. Leonard Hunter and Charles Buff officiating.
The family will receive frineds Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Harris Funeral Home.
Lloyd Hester Jr.
LINCOLNTON - Mr. Lloyd Thomas Hester Jr., 65, of 321 E. Jennings St., died Friday, May 26, 2000, at his home.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at McKown's Mountain Baptist Church with the Revs. Dean Painter, Dean Patton and Jim Powell officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney.
The body will be placed at the home of his aunt, Betty McAbee, at 626 Peeler Creek Road, Gaffney, until the service time on Monday.

Tessie Tillman
SHELBY - Mrs. Tessie Houser Tillman, 94, of 509 Country Club Acres, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at her home.
A native of Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late James T. and Roberta Gilmore Houser. She was the co-owner of Tillman's Super Market and was a member of Kadesh United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Atlas Wilbur Tillman; and two daughters, Doris Tillman Beam and Roberta Tillman.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Catherine Tillman of Shelby; a sister, Thelma Dixon of Shelby; three grandchildren, Terry McCartney, Eddie Tillman Jr. and Clyde Beam Jr.; seven great-grandchildren, Ansley Champion and her husband Scott, Holly Martin, Emily Tillman, Reid Tillman, Chet Beam, Cameron Beam and Mattie Beam.
A graveside service will be today at 3 p.m. at Kadesh United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Kiser officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of Eddie and Catherine Tillman, 320 Country Club Acres.

HICKORY - Stephen William Hefner, infant son of Kelvin William and Karen Fitch Hefner, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born May 26, 2000, he is survived by a grandfather, Eddie Fitch of Shelby; a grandmother, Shelia Cummings of Shelby; great-grandparents, Lee and Nancy Fitch of Shelby; and grandparents, Scott and Jeanette Frye of Hickory.
The mother is employed as a nurse at Frye Regional Medical Center and the father is employed at Piedmont Natural Gas in Hickory.
A graveside funeral service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Catawba Memorial Park with Pastor Paul Birner officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Catawba Funeral Home.
Willie Frederick
ELLENBORO - Mrs. Willie Lee Frederick, 82, of 352 Webb Church Road, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at her home.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph Frederick of the home; a son, Franklin Frederick of Ellenboro; four daughters and a son-in-law, Marion and Daniel Jolly of Shelby, Ruby Webb of Harrisburg, Pa., Mary Thompson of Forest City, Phyllis Hammond of Providence, R.I.; an adopted son and a daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Geneva Lassiter of Ellenboro; a brother, Otis Smith of Monroe, Ga.; two sisters, Alma Carroll and Ethel Paschal, both of Decatur, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at The Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Lawndale with Pastor James Benton officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today one hour before the service at the church.

ELLENBORO - Mr. Walter Lewis Smith, 66, of 258 Raleigh Ledbetter Road, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Martha Botts
CASAR - Mrs. Martha Ann Hoyle Botts, 81, of Deer Creek Road, formerly of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, born on Dec. 23, 1918, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Martha Elizabeth Wortman Hoyle. She was employed by the Southern Baptist Convention for 23 years as a home missionary for seaman at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. She was also a self-employed rental property clerk in Fort Lauderdale.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Botts and Henry Botts.
She is survived by her husband, Howard Robert Botts; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jacques Trachsler of Zurich, Switzerland; two brothers, Cletus Hoyle and Edwin Hoyle, both of Drexel; and a sister, Irene Hoyle of Casar.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. Norris Willis officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Mrs. Mary A. Covington, 96, of Brookgate Drive, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at the Conway Nursing Center.
Born November 16, 1903 in Clio, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John Thadius and Kate Beatrice Buie Hubbard. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Adger Covington; a son, Joseph Adger Covington Jr.; and a daughter, Katie Newton.
She is survived by a brother, Telford Hubbard of Havelock; a sister, Janet Pearson of Charleston, S.C.; a son-in-law, William V. Newton, Jr. of Myrtle Beach; three grandchildren, W. Vernon Newton of Shelby, and Debbie Moore and Pam Starling, both of Myrtle Beach; six great-grandchildren; a nephew and six nieces.

Lewis Doby
CHARLOTTE - Mr. Lewis Doby, 60, of Ellenboro, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at his home.
Born January 5, 1940 in Charlotte, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Blanche Deaton Doby. He was a veteran of the Air Force and worked in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Utility Department.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Doby and a sister, Joyce Small.
He is survived by two children, Thomas Doby of Shelby and Tamara Collins and her husband Daniel of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Daniel Ray Collins and Michelle Rene Collins; three brothers, Lawrence Doby of Belmont, Wayne Doby of Stanly, and Jerry Doby of Iron Station; and three sisters, Marjorie Doby of Charlotte, Peggy Helms of Huntersville, and Jean Borders of Charlotte.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at McEwen Funeral Service Charlotte Chapel.
Burial will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery with military honors.

Willard Buff
MCKINNEY, Texas - Mr. Willard B. Buff, 78, of McKinney, Texas, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at his home.
Born February 3, 1922 in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late David and Mittie Sain Buff. He married Dorothy Lewis on July 30, 1954 in Plano Texas. He was supervisor for Hollywood Doors, and served in the Army during WWII, 99th Infantry Division and 372nd Field Artillery Service Battery. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Buff of McKinney, Texas; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Nancy and Walter T. Nichol, Vicki and Randy Quillan, and Misty and James Fink, all of McKinney, Texas; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ricki and Susan Buff of Garland, Texas, Gerald and Peggy Colbert of Alpharetta, Ga. and James David Buff of Tennessee Colony, Texas; sixteeen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Bivens of Rutherford College and Veola Crawley of Charlotte; and a brother, John Bivens of Charlotte.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel with the Rev. Robert Helsley officiating.
Burial will follow in Good Hope Cemetery in Celina, Texas.

SHELBY - Mr. James Ray "Jim" Carroll Sr., 41, of 243 Dakar Drive, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Moss Lake.
Born in Oakland, Calif., he was a son of Carol Louise Fillipini Carroll and the late James Leroy Carroll. He was a mechanic at Anchor Marine and formerly worked at Rental Center. He was a member of the River of Life Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Gainesville, Fla. are his wife, Miriam Gail Blount Carroll of the home; a daughter, Jamie Rebecca Carroll of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeffrey and Beverly Carroll of Gainesville, Fla. and Jerry and Kris Carroll of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Verna and Cliff Yarborough of Jacksonville, Fla.
A private family graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Sunset Cemetery, with Rev. Parris McCurry officiating.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Diane Beatty Roberson, 60, of 1225 Oakland Road, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at her home.

Norman Freeman
ASHEVILLE - Mr. Norman Leary Freeman, 74, of Asheville, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at his home.
Born October 23, 1925, in Greenville, S.C., he was the son of the late Norman Benjamin and Bessie Jones Freeman. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, in which he flew 35 combat missions. He attended Brevard Junior College. In 1949 he began his newspaper career at the Greenville News in the press room. He worked for newspapers in Jackson, Miss., Tallahassee, Fla., and Charleston, W.Va., and was the general manager at the Daily Press Times Herald in Newport News, Va. He served on many national newspaper boards and helped in developing production equipment standards for the entire newspaper industry. He was involved in the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce and several other organizations. He served on the board of Christopher Newport College and as president of the Peninsula Chapter of the Association of the Army.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Marjorie Virginia Jones Freeman.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and Bill Perdue of Asheville and Denise and Chuck McCallister of Knoxville, Tenn., and five grandchildren, Justin Perdue and Jennifer Perdue of Asheville and Matthew McCallister, Laura McCallister and John McCallister of Knoxville.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Arden First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stephen C. Summers officiating.
Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery, Shelby.

Gertrude Brinkley
CANDLER - Mrs. Gertrude Stanley Brinkley, 86, of Holcombe Cove Road, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Pisgah Manor Nursing Home.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Job and Emma Anderson Stanley. She lived most of her life in Buncombe County. She was a member and former Sunday School teacher of Edgewood Baptist Church. She was a former waitress at Beacon Restaurant.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit "Ted" Brinkley.
She is survived by three sons, Clark Brinkley and Phillip Brinkley, both of Candler, and Ed Brinkley of Elon College; a daughter, Helen Barnette of Shelby; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Shelton officiating.
Burial followed in Pisgah View Memorial Park.

RUTHERFORDTON - Miss Virginia Jane Owens, 86, of 710 Brooks Lake Road, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
