KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Jason McWilliams Brown, 17, of 260 Black Stallion Trail, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The funeral will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Mitchell Pruitt officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Jim Carroll
SHELBY - Mr. James Roy "Jim" Carroll Sr., 41, of 243 Dakar Drive, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Moss Lake.
Born in Oakland, Calif., he was a son of Carol Louise Fillipini Carroll of Gainesville, Fla., and the late James Leroy Carroll. He was a mechanic at Anchor Marine and formerly worked at Rental Center. He was a member of the River of Life Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Miriam Gail Blount Carroll of the home; a daughter, Jamie Rebecca Carroll of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeffrey and Beverly Carroll of Gainesville and Jerry and Kris Carroll of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Verna and Cliff Yarborough of Jacksonville.
A private family graveside service will be held today at 4 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery, with Rev. Parris McCurry officiating.
The family headquarters is at 243 Dakar Drive.

John Winston Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. John H. Winston Jr., of 706 Buford Street, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Greenville, he was the son of the late John H. Sr. and Mary Bryant Winston. He was a former member of York Memorial AME Zion Church in Greenville. He then attended Waddell Chapel AME Zion Church where he has served as Superintendent of Sunday School, teacher of Vacation Bible School, member of the Trustee Board, the Men's Booster Club, the Boy Scout Troop and served in many other capacities in the church.
He received his high school diploma from Epps High School in Greenville, he earned his B.S. Degree in Agriculture and later his Master's Degree in Science and Chemistry, both from N.C. A&T University. In his fourth year of undergraduate study, he was drafted into the US Army where he participated in the Invasion of Normandy during World War II and received two Bronze Stars of Outstanding Service.
He began teaching agriculture at Camp High School in Cleveland County in 1946. From 1953 to 1967, he taught Science, Math and Physical Education at Cleveland High School. He also coached football and basketball at Cleveland High School and won several state championships in both sports.
He coached former NFL player Bobby Bell and Melvin Phillips. He achieved another milestone when he was appointed to Shelby Senior High School in the 1967-68 school year to teach math and science and served in that position until his retirement in 1980. He was active for many years in the NEA, NCAE, and the Retired Teacher's Association, served on the Parks and Recreation Board, headed a division for the American Cancer Society fundraising campaign, a charter member of the SWATTO club and was a former president. He was also the 12th inductee into the Shelby Sports Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Kittye Withers Winstonn; a son, the Rev. John H. Winston III of Pittboro; one grandson, John H. Winston IV of Concorde; a brother, Harold Winston of Norfolk, Va.; and a special friend, Jennie Borders Camp of Shelby.
The funeral will be Saturday at noon at Waddell Chapel AME Zion Church in Shelby with the Rev. Luke Curry officiating. The Rev. Richard Harris will be the eulogist. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Cornelius.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday.

Maude Wotring
SHELBY - Maude Ava Hord Patton Wotring, 92, known in her younger years by friends and family as "Mud" and more recently as "Pat", died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
Born Dec. 31, 1907, to William Gordon and Mary Ann Whitworth Hord, she spend her early years in Waco, attending school there and graduating from Waco High School.
For several years, she taught school at Casar before moving to the Washington, D.C., area and marrying Frazier P. Patton. After his death, she worked as a receptionist at a private girls school and took on the nickname of "Pat" Patton. From then, she was known by friends as "Pat". It was when she was a receptionist that she met her late husband, John Wotring. They were married in Waco at the home of her mother after a family gathering on Christmas night, 1962. They resided in Falls Church, Va., where both were active in Boulevard Baptist Church, and where she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Following the death of her second husband, "Pat" was joined by her sister, Mary Lou Niven of Albemarle, and the two of them alternated living in the home of each one. As their health declined, the two sisters decided to return to Cleveland County near relatives, so in the spring of 1998, they moved to Alterra Sterling House of Shelby, where Pat lived until she was hospitalized and then moved to Wendover before her death.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers Loron Hord and Alvin Hord; and three sisters Leslie McBrayer, Zona Clay and Mary Lou Niven.
She is survived by a brother, Raymond D. Hord of Shelby; and a number of nieces and nephews in Cleveland and surrounding counties.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, 1401 W. Dixon Blvd., in Shelby. Burial will follow in the cemetery at Capernaum near Waco.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Ida Pitman, 82, of 141 Pitman St., died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

SHELBY - Miss Joanie Appleman, 13, of 1208 Ridgemont Ave., died Wednesday, May 31, 2000.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Frank James and Annette Smith Appleman of Shelby. She was a student at Shelby Middle School and a member of Blessed Way Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Joann Appleman and Melissa Appleman Wease of the home and her grandmother, Evelyn Smith of Shelby.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Clay-Barnette Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Cook officiating.
Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.

CASAR - Mrs. Delia Faye Pruett Chapman, 84, of 203 Buck Chapman Road, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Stella Bumgardner Pruett. She was a charter member and trustee at Zoar Baptist Church in Casar.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, D.W. "Buck" Chapman; a daughter, Stella Faye Chapman; two brothers, Edison Pruett and Doyle Pruett; and three sisters, Pauline Deviney, Elouise McNeilly and Dorothy Crotts.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Sherrill and Margaret Ann Chapman of Casar; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Jim Mauney of Casar, formerly of Shelby; two brothers, Amos Pruett and Roy Pruett, both of Casar; two sisters, Lola Deviney and Mary Walker, both of Casar; three grandsons and three granddaughters-in-law, Michael and Brenda Mauney, Mark and Tabatha Chapman, and Benjamin and Tiffany Chapman, all of Casar; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Sharon and Harrill Brackett of Casar; and six great-grandchildren, Whitney Brackett, Brittany Chapman, Heather Chapman, Sarah Chapman, Alex Chapman, and Trinity Chapman.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Zoar Baptist Church with the Revs. Carrell Pruette and Dupre Gowan officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He then became Superintendent of Sunday school, teacher of vacation bible school, a member of the Trustee Board, the Men's Booster Club, the Boy Scout troop and served in many other capacities in the church.

In 1936, he entered A&T University spending three and a half years prior to being drafted into World War II, where he served over four years and was part of the invasion of Normandy for which he received two Bronze Stars for Outstanding Service. He returned home and completed his undergraduate work at A&T State University in 1946 with a B.S. degree in agriculture and later his master's degree in science and chemistry.
He began his professional life as an agriculture teacher at Camp High School in Cleveland County beginning in 1946. In 1953 to 1967, he taught science, math and physical education at Cleveland High School. He also coached football and basketball at Cleveland High School and won several state championships in both sports.
