Frank McFarland Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. Frank Osborne McFarland Jr., 62, of 3687 Artee Road, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Frank Osborne and Vernie Daves McFarland. He was a regional sales manager for Lee Boy Industries, a co-owner of Master Equipment Co. and a partner at Foothills Asphalt. He was a member, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Sandy Plains Baptist Church. He was one of the founders of the No. 7 Volunteer Fire Department where he was the first Assistant Chief, a former member of Shelby Rotary Club, and a member of Hollis Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie Adams McFarland; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Frank Osborne "Ozzie" and Lisa McFarland III of Boiling Springs, Al McFarland of Shelby, Greg and Stacy McFarland of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Kirk McFarland of Shelby; a sister, Joan Gettys of Hollis; and four grandchildren, Frank "O.J." McFarland IV, Adam McFarland, Caleb McFarland and Jonah McFarland.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sandy Plains Baptist Church with Dr. Don McSwain officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Thelma D. Williams, 66, of 313 N. Gaston St., died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Ruby Phillips Daves. She was a homemaker and a member of Midview Baptist Church in Kings Mountain.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Williams Jr.; and a brother, Robert Daves.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Freda W. and Ronnie Tesseneer of Goldsboro; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael K. Williams and David M. and Fay Williams, all of Kings Mountain; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Oscar Hullender of Wrightsville Beach, Elaine and Richard White of Blacksburg, S.C., Dorothy and Floyd Hamrick of Rock Hill, S.C., and Frances Byers of Shelby; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Charles and Joann Daves and J.C. and Carolyn Daves, all of Shelby, and Kathleen Daves of Florida; four grandchildren, Jason Williams and Matthew Williams, both of Kings Mountain, and Tammy Tesseneer and Robbie Tesseneer, both of Goldsboro; and four great-grandchildren, Thomas Dever, James Dever, Mason Dever and Haley Strickland, all of Goldsboro.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Midview Baptist Church with the Revs. Bob Hope and Michael Dixon officiating.
Burial will follow at New Camp Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

BLACKSBURG, S.C. - Mrs. Virginia McDaniel Black, 69, 304 W. Pine St., died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at her home.

Evie Brackett
SHELBY - Mrs. Evie Edmondson Bell Brackett, 96, of 401 N. Morgan St., died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Hall County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Marion Franklin and Katie Nevada Keys Edmondson. She was a homemaker and a member of Second Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Alexander Bell and her second husband, Raymond Brackett; and a daughter, Dorothy L. Black.
She is survived by a daughter, Frances B. Lewis of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a step-daughter, Mozelle Willis of Shelby; three step-sons, R.A. Brackett, Grady Brackett, and Alvin Brackett; a brother and sister-in-law, Boyd and Esther Edmondson of Shelby; and fourteen grandchildren.
The funeral was Tuesday at Clay-Barnette Chapel with the Rev. R.A. Brackett officiating.
Burial followed at Zoar Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

SHELBY - Chief Master Sergeant J.B. "PaPa J." Freeman, 81, of 304 Westside Drive, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Dewey M. and Vernie Ledford Freeman Walker. He served in the Air Force N.C.O. Association, Enlisted Mens Retired Association, Air Force Gunners Association, Second Air Division, 392nd Bomb Group. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church, the V.F.W., D.A.V., Amvets and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Lena Warlick Freeman of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy Brian and Laura Freeman of Midwest City, Okla. and Ronald Dean and Lori Freeman of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Steve Williamson of Prattville, Ala.; two brothers, Jack M. Freeman of Augusta, Ga., and Dewey M. Freeman Jr. of Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren, Trisha Freeman of Midwest City, Kaitlyn Freeman and Cody Freeman, both of Shelby, and Jennifer Reid and her husband, Tom and Chris Williamson, all of Prattville; and four great-grandchildren, Dalton Reid, Dillon Reid, Abby Reid and Mason Reid, all of Prattville.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services and at other times at the home.

Albert Ledford Sr.
MOORESBORO - Mr. Albert Edward Ledford Sr., 75, of 101 Walton Drive, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at Autumn Care of Forest City.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Essie Etta Lail Ledford. He was a retired textile worker.
He is survived by a son, Albert Edward Ledford Jr. of Carrboro and a daughter, Ginger Elaine Ledford of Shelby.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Caris Owens officiating.

John Stanford Sr.
HICKORY - Mr. John Ellis Stanford Sr., 64, of 23 Ninth Avenue S.E., died Monday, June 26, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jackson, Ga., he was born on Sept. 9, 1935, the son of the late Van and Emma Jordan Stanford. He was retired from Drexel Heritage and was a member of Glendale Street Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia Stanford; a son, John Stanford Jr.; two brothers, Willie Lee Stanford and Lonzry Stanford Jr.; and a sister, Louise Wright.
He is survived by five daughters, Cynthia Stanford, Bonita Stanford, Ernestine Stanford Ellis and Sheena Stanford, and Mekia Bowie, all of Hickory; five sons, Nathan Bowie of Raleigh, Jimmy Stanford, Michael Stanford, Bryan Stanford, and Mario Stanford, all of Bridgeport, Conn.; a sister, Julia Mae Thomas of Vale; a brother, Rufus Stanford of Asheville; five grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Glendale Street Church of Christ with Brother Odell Rhynehardt officiating.

Mildred Smart
SHELBY - Mrs. Mildred Walker Wilson Smart, 91, of Shelby, died Saturday, June 24, 2000.
Born Dec. 28, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Vashti Walker Wilson. She served as manager of the local Trailways/Greyhound bus terminals for 45 years. She was a founding member of Peach Street Baptist Church and served as an active member and church treasurer for many years. As her health declined, she transferred her membership to First Baptist Church to attend services with her family. She enjoyed sewing and cooking.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, G. Edwin "Casey" Turner and E. Frank Smart; two brothers, Neil and Joe Wilson; and a sister-in-law, Sue Wilson.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty Weaver and her husband, Bill, of the home; a son, Ed Turner and his wife, Suzie, of Oxford, Ga.; grandchildren Sharon W. Blanton and her husband, Neil, of Punta Gorda, Fla., Robyn W. Putnam of Shelby and Richard Putnam of Mount Holly, Betsy W. Bryant and her husband, Terry, of Shelby, Edwin Turner and his wife, Kathi and Deidre T. Slifko and her husband, Paul, all of Conyers, Ga. and Shena T. Dorothy Staley
SHELBY - Mrs. Dorothy Shomate Staley, 86, of 809 E. Graham St., died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
Born Sept. 3, 1914 in Louisville, Ky., she was a daughter of the late John and Ruth Shomate. She retired as manager of North Lake Country Club in 1988 with 28 years of service. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe B. Staley, who died May, 19, 2000; and a son, Robert Allan Staley.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Paul M. and Toinetta P. Staley, of Lynchburg, Va.; a daughter, Sara L. Staley of Dallas, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Sherry Staley of Laurens, S.C.; and four grandchildren, Robert Payne Staley, Emily Cameron Staley, Eleanor Elizabeth Staley and Catherine Whittington Staley.
A graveside service will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park, with Dr. Joe Reeves officiating.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Leonard Alvin Smith Sr., 84, of 807 Floyd St., died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Born May 18, 1916 in Cherokee County, he was a son of the late William Fletcher Jr. and Eldie Holland Smith. He was a World War II Air Force veteran. He was employed by Sadie Mill in Kings Mountain for 48 years as plant manager and superintendent. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and the Eastside Men's Bible Class. He was a member of American Legion Post 155.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Moore Smith; two brothers, Clarence "Grassy" Smith and William Fletcher Smith Jr.; and two sisters, Dessie Farley and Essie Cable.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Chapman Smith; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard A. Jr. and Jackie Smith of Greenwood, S.C. and Rodney and Patricia Smith of Cherryville; three step-sons, Johnny McLeymore and his wife, Wanda, Darryl McLeymore and his wife, Nina and Jeff McLeymore and his fiancee, Wendy Morris, all of Cherryville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Bill Metcalf of Clover, S.C. and Glenda and John Newell of Matthews; two sisters, Mable Ross and Willie Cable, both of Kings Mountain; seven grandchildren, Warren Newell, Brian Newell, Mickey Metcalf, Darlene Gardiner, Jason Smith, Melinda Hicks and Trae Smith; five great-grandchildren, Tracy Gardiner, Nikki Gardiner, Ashley Newell, John Newell and Griffin Hicks; six step-grandchildren, Eric W. William Wright
STARTEX, S.C. - Mr. William James Albert Wright, 65, of 42 Chestnut St., died Friday, June 23, 2000, at his home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late William Albert and Ellen Gordon Wright. He was a member of Tucapau Baptist Church and was employed by Span Packaging Company. He retired after 22 years in the Navy.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Guy Wright of the home; three sons, Eric Wright of Kings Mountain, Darel Bentley of Duncan, S.C. and Tony Bentley of Moore, S.C.; a daughter, Amanda Wrighter of the home; four brothers, Paul Wright of Pacolet, S.C., Saul Wright and Job Wright, both of Cowpens, S.C., and Rev. Silas Wright of Spartanburg, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Lydia Waters of Kings Mountain and Sarah Coggins of Cowpens; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Tucapua Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bill Pate, Kenneth Sanford and J.H. Hammond officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Fort Prince Memorial Gardens in Wellford, S.C.
