Mattie Carroll
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Mattie McGill Carroll, 79, of 508 N. Watterson St., died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
A native of York County, S.C., she was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in Sunday school and as a missionary.
She is survived by four daughters and a son-in-law, Helen McGill Williams, Hazeline McGill Adams, Carolyn Carroll and the Rev. Michael Hill, and Audrey Willet Carroll, all of Kings Mountain; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve Jerome and Angela Carroll, of Lowell; a sister, Peggy Flowers of High Point; one grandson that she raised, Dennis McGill of Kings Mountain; a sister-in-law, Maggie Carroll of Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Kings Mountain with the Rev. C.A. Feemster officiating. Burial will follow at a local cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Hilda Fern
SHELBY - Mrs. Hilda Lucille Fern, 88, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Cleveland Pines in Shelby.
A native of Alva, Okla., she was the daughter of the late Charles Joseph and Jessie Gerald Warr Beeler. While living in Oklahoma City, she was a homemaker, a member of Putnam City Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and worked with young children and Colorado youth camps. In 1987, she moved to Shelby and was active in Keenagers and in the Keenage choir at Elizabeth Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was the preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Blayne Fern; a son, Kenneth Roy Fern; and two brothers, Hontas Beeler and Marvin Beeler.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Eugene Fern of Montgomery, Texas, and Terry Lee Fern of Kings Mountain; one sister, Virginia Baldwin Neaderhiser of Oklahoma City; one brother, John Beeler of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Saturday in Oklahoma City at Resurrection Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Sue Carlisle
SHELBY - Mrs. Sue Hamrick Carlisle, 83, of 1028 Allendale Drive, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late John Bynum and Elsie Walker Hamrick. She was co-owner of Carlisle Studio and a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and of the Young at Heart.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Hoyt Hamrick, Clyde Hamrick and J.B. Hamrick; and one sister, Elizabeth McRorie.
She is survived by her husband, Hubert O. Carlisle of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Cindy Carlisle of Shelby; a grandson, Nathan Carlisle of Roanoke, Va.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Cazzola of Atlanta, Ga., and Sara Denney of Fayetteville; a great-granddaughter, Elise Denney of Fayetteville; two brothers, John Reid Hamick of Hamlet and Fay Hamrick of Bostic; and two sisters, Annie Lou Long of Forest City and Lillian Rollins of Spindale.
The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Dr. Dolores Queen officiating. Burial will follow at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Bostic.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Arthur Moss Sr.
SHELBY - Mr. Arthur L. Moss, 94, of Sterling House, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Lawson and Luna Rippy Moss. He was retired from the Shelby Police Department after 30 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Shelby and Gideon Sunday School Class.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Hamrick Moss; a daughter, Jean Moss Smith; and four brothers, Will Moss, Curtis Moss, Ben Moss and Odell Moss; and two sisters, Josie Moss Turney and Lizzie Moss Blanton.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Art and Lynn Moss Jr. of Shelby; a son-in-law, Pete Smith of Grover; a sister, Gladys Moss Bourne of Asheville; five grandchildren, Catherine Moss Crump of Rock Hill, S.C., Carol Moss Wilhelm of New York, Susan Smith Elliott, David Smith and Michael Smith, all of Grover; six great-grandchildren, Jeremy Martin, Zack Smith and Adam Smith, all of Grover, Dar Romein of Rock Hill, S.C., Henry Wilhelm of New York and Charles Crump of Rock Hill.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. William A. Cooper officiating.

Pauline Moss
SHELBY - Mrs. Pauline Wylie Moss, 89, of Shelby Manor, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Shelby Manor.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Eugene and Alice Warren Wylie. She was a homemaker and member of Eastside Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Glenn Moss; a son, Harold Moss; two brothers, Troy Lee Wylie and Manning Wylie; and two sisters, Evelena Bridges and Mozell Wylie.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Violet and Lawrence Webber and Barbara and Randall Evans, all of Shelby; six grandchildren, Sandra Hammitt, Debra Hendrick, Robin Moss, Kristina Moss, Angela Evans and Jason Evans; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church with Dr. Harold Fite officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral.

CLOVER, S.C. - Mrs. Angela Dee Bowman Abrams, 35, of 801 Enon Church Road, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at her home.
A native of Gastonia, she was the daughter of Dorothy Martin Mayhue of Gastonia and Harvey Reid Bowman III of Mount Holly. She was a homemaker and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Kings Creek, S.C.
She is survived by her husband, Stephen Zane Abrams of Clover; a step-father, Terry Mayhue of Gastonia; a step-mother, Sharon Bowman of Mount Holly; one sister, Arlene Moore of Bessemer City; and a half brother, Matthew Bowman of Mount Holly.
The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Enon Baptist Church at Smyrna, S.C. with the Revs. Hoyt Abrams, Roger Hamm and Harold Beam officiating. Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia.

Thomas Davis
FOREST CITY - Mr. Thomas F. Davis, 76, of 287 Poppy Hill Drive, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at his home.
A native of Forest City, he was born Feb. 10, 1924, the son of the late James Webb and Lois Cagle Davis. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was president of the J.W. Davis Company in Forest City from 1946 to 1984. Before his death, he was serving as the vice president of the J&R Davis Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Forest City.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Callahan Davis of the home; two sons, Jim Davis and Rick Davis, both of Forest City; two brothers, J. Toliver Davis and Jack H. Davis, both of Forest City; four grandchildren, Jennifer Davis, Tim Davis, Jeff Davis and Caroline Davis.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Barry K. Keys and Dr. M.B. Morrow Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Cool Springs Cemetery.

Mavis Hopper
SHELBY - Mrs. Mavis Hamrick Hopper, 67, of 1627 Red Road, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg, S.C.
A native of Spartanburg County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Clarence William and Essie Silvers Atkins. She was a retired operator at Hoechst Celanese and was a member of Landmark Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles C. Hamrick.
She is survived by her second husband, Clyde Hopper of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen H. and Michael Emery and Sherry H. and Dennis Ivey, all of Gaffney, S.C.; a son, Charles Dale Hamrick of Shelby; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Cornelia Champion and Frances and Romeo Nodine, all of Fingerville, S.C.; two step-sons, Mike Hopper and his wife, Paula, and Ricky Hopper, all of Grover; two granddaughters, Kristin Holcomb of Gaffney and Airman Kimberly Emery of Charleston, S.C.; four grandsons, Travis Dixon, Phillip Hamrick, and Timmy Hamrick, all of Shelby, and Kevin Dixon of Gaffney; three great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

William Dedmon
SHELBY - Mr. William F. Dedmon, 76, of 254 Buffalo Church Road, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at his home.
A native of Shelby, he was the son of the late F.S. and Jennie Alexander Dedmon. He was founder and President of Asphalt Paving of Shelby, Inc. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served on the LSM 45. He received the American Victory World War II medal and the Asiatic Pacific and I Star Medal. He served on the Salvation Army Advisory board and the Cleveland County Fair Association Board of Directors. He was a member and Director of the National Asphalt Pavement Association and Carolina Asphalt Pavement Association where he served as secretary and treasurer. He was a member of Waco Baptist Church and formerly belonged to Ross Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Dedmon.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Spangler Dedmon; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Sr. and Delores Dedmon of Shelby; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Krista and Bob Kustra of Greenville, S.C. and Jan and Mike Elder of Wake Forest; a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Doris Dedmon of Shelby; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Clara and Lowell Shive of Greenville, and Rachel Dedmon of Chapel Hill; a sister-in-law, Joan Dedmon of Shelby; five granddaughters and a grandson-in-law, Donna and Mike Cardascio, Jenny Kustra, Alison Kustra, Anna Kustra, and Gretchen Elder; two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Donald Jr. and Tisha Dedmon and Trent Elder; four great-grandchildren, Tripp Dedmon, Matthew Dedmon, Clay Dedmon, and Gracie Johnson and two step-great-grandchildren, Cody and Chase Cardascio.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ross Grove Baptist church with the Rev. Hunter Hay officiating.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
