Olive Harris
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Olive Benedict Harris, 85, of Wesley Care Center, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000.
Born March 16, 1915, in Salisbury, Md., she was a daughter of the late Herman Alton and Alice Parker Benedict. A former registered nurse, she was a 1937 graduate of the Peninsula General Hospital School of Nursing. A homemaker, she was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Shelby, and more recently she was a member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marion Truitt.
She is survived by a daughter, Anita H. Taft and her husband, Don, of Charlotte; a son, Carroll "C.T." Harris and his wife, Jane, of Wingate; two brothers, Glenn Benedict and George Benedict, both of Salisbury, Md.; three grandchildren, Lisa T. Wall of Charlotte, William T. Harris of Hampton, Va., and Kimberly T. Martin of Matthews; and three great-grandchildren, Benjamin T. Harris, Daniel P. Harris and Michael T. Martin.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, with the Revs. Stan Heiser and Blythe Taylor officiating. A private burial followed the service.

GROVER - Mr. Glenn Scott Smith, 14, of 113 Grier St., died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Gaston County, he was the son of George Scott and Michelle Leigh Smith of Grover. He was a rising ninth-grader at Kings Mountain High School and a member of the Kings Mountain Middle School track team.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Jack B. Smith of the home; paternal grandparents, George Glenn and Becky Smith of Kings Mountain and Dorothy Kay Greene of McAdenville; maternal grandparents, John and Sara Leigh of Earl and Royce and Brenda Blalock of Shelby; and a number of uncles and aunts.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Love Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Barry Philbeck officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain.

RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. Ralph Scott Wyatt, 35, of 1401 Cooper's Gap Road, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Springs Hospital.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Crowe's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Darold Wayne Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

STANLEY - Mrs. Daisy Olivia Morrison Blalock, 73, of 6744 Old Plank Road, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Lincoln Medical Center.

HICKORY - Mr. Z.K. Surratt, 72, of Brian Center, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Kelly Surratt and Jane Wright Surratt. He was a farmer.
He was survived by a friend, Willie B. Hunt; two sons, Tommy Surratt and Jay Surratt, both of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Gwen Surratt; one brother, Necolon Wright of Pittsburgh; five sisters, Ceomia Jackson of Shelby; Metilda Geter, Lula Mae Eskridge, Clara Surratt and Daisy Hall, all of Shelby; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church with the Rev. J.M. Camp officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of Daisy Bell Hall, 303 N. Washington St., Shelby.

SHELBY - Mr. Ralph Edwin Biggerstaff, 70, of 1605 Fallston Road, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Foy and Mae Moran Biggerstaff. He was a retired fire protective consultant for Industrial Risk Insurers and later worked part-time for Radio Shack. He was a former high school teacher at Four Oaks High School in Four Oaks. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Sunshine High School and N.C. State University. He was a member of the Air Force Auxiliary, the Shelby Amateur Radio Club, and a past associate member of the American Society of Photogrammetery. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Howell Biggerstaff; two sons, Robert Biggerstaff of Matthews and Kenneth Ray Howell of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Kenny Owens of Naples, Fla. and Robyn Howell- and Art Mauney Jr.; and two grandchildren, Trace Mauney and Avery Mauney.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Chris White officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Catherine Lois Corbett McCarty, 92, of Charlotte, formerly of Shelby, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Timberwood Nursing Home in Livingston, Texas.
Born January 4, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Woods Albright Corbett and John Oscar Corbett. Raised in Graham, she attended Flora McDonald College, received a Business Degree from Elon College and was a bookkeeper. She was a member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Timothy James McCarty; a grandson, Michael Campbell; a son-in-law, Del Boardman; a brother, James W. Corbett; and a sister, Margaret Whitfield.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia and Robert Campbell of Livingston, Texas, Barbara and Stephen Whisonant of Charlotte, and Joan Boardman of Belmont; a brother and sister-in-law, John Oscar and Lillian Corbett of Asheville, formerly of Shelby; a grandson, Mark Campbell of Itasca, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Amy Campbell and Brian Campbell; and many nephews and nieces.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, Dilworth Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bill Cooke officiating.
Burial will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.

A retiree from the Dover Textile Mill, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Ella Ruth Wright Starr, 69, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of York County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late L. Ernest and Emma Alexander Wright. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church until she moved to Kings Mountain and then joined St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Clover High School and Barber Scotia College in Concord. She also studied at Johnson C. Smith University and North Carolina A & T State University. She taught for several years at Center Hill School and then at Stewart Elementary, Lincoln High, and Costner Elementary Schools. She was a member of Charity Chapter #548 O.E.S. Church Aide Society, North Carolina Association of Edu-cators, United Order of Tents, National Association of Univer-sity Women, and North Carolina Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by her husband, Quincy Starr; three sons, John Avery "Butch" Starr, Quincy Starr Jr., and Janathan Starr, all of Kings Mountain; a grandson, Justin Starr of Kings Mountain; a granddaughter, Sonya "Skipper" A. Hughes of Kings Mountain; a foster sister, Mae Alice Thommason of York, S.C.; a friend, Louise Outen of Gastonia; two aunts; and many other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clarence Wright officiating.
Burial will follow at St. James United Methodist Church Cemetery in York, S.C.
