SHELBY - Mrs. Eugenia Scruggs DePriest, 81, of 1513 Mountain View Circle, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Green and Mary "Mamie" Piercy Mintz Scruggs. She was a retired office manager for Dr. Charles Stamey Pediatric Practice and was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Billy DePriest of Shelby; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Greg and Rebecca DePriest of Nashville, Tenn. and Mike and Martha DePriest of New Bern and Steve DePriest of Shelby; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Rutherfordton, with the Rev. Don McSwain officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Stamey Funeral Home.

ELLENBORO - Mr. Tony Jeffery Hodge, 35, of 535 Hodge Road, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, in Casar.
A memorial service will be today at 3 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with the Rev. Owen Duncan officiating.

LAWNDALE - Mrs. Emma Lizzie Odoms Stroud Hunt, 65, of 3519 Old Shelby Road, died Saturday, July 9, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born June 16, 1936, the daughter of the late Eli and Latha Jackson Odoms. She was a homemaker and a member of Brooks Chapel United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Iverson Stroud Jr.; two sisters, Carolina Odoms and Ruth Catherine Ramseur; and a step-daughter, Idella Hunt.
She is survived by her husband, Booker T. Hunt of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, John Thomas and Lisa Stroud, Eddie and Barbara Jean Stroud, and James and Barbara Stroud, all of Shelby; three daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Ricky Marble of Lawndale, Claudette Stroud of the home and Minister Mary Spikes of Shelby; two step-daughters, Ruthie Mae Ross and Ethel Shell of Shelby; one step-son, John Lee Hunt of Hickory; five sisters, Betty Lou Russell, Margaret Shuford and Mary Ann Odoms, all of Shelby, Sallie Barnette Hill, and Lelia Mae Clark of Lawndale; three brothers, Johnny Franklin Odoms of Shelby, Roland Odoms Sr. of Polkville and Plass Odoms of Hickory; and 31 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Brooks Chapel United Methodist Church with Dr. T.A. Pawell officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. - Mr. Ollie M. "Stringbean" Spicer, 88, of Ocean Springs, Miss., formerly of Shelby, died Monday, July 10, 2000, in Ocean Springs, Miss.
A native of Independence, Va., he was the son of the late William and Dora Spicer. While in Shelby, he worked and retired from Lily Mill and was a member of the Old Timer's Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Leslie Spicer; a brother, Pearl Spicer; and a great-granddaughter, Josie Marie Cook.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Spicer of Ocean Springs, Miss.; a daughter and son-in-law, Retha and Jim Cook of Ocean Springs, Miss.; five sisters, Ella Mae Spicer of Independence, Va., Pauline Brewer of Galax, Va., Retha Weatherman of Jonesville, Susie Long of Mayking, Ky. and Martha Jane Pittman of Salem, Ind.; two brothers, Eugene Spicer of Hillsville, Va. and Bill Spicer of Independence, Va.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A native of Laurens, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Archie Jacob and Leona Knight Lawson. She was a homemaker and a member of Community Baptist Church.

LAWNDALE - Mrs. Faye Jones Spangler, 87, of Lawndale, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Frances M. and Arrie M. White Jones. She was a retired spinner at Cleveland Mills and attended Lawndale Missionary Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, James Thurman Spangler Sr.; a son and daughter-in-law, J.T. Jr. and Earlene Spangler of Hickory; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margie and Paul Earwood of Shelby and Janice and Nelson Proctor of Hickory; a sister, Fannie Randall of Los Angeles.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Lamar Hewitt and Cecil Buff and Jack Waters officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Olna Glover Price, 90, of 1702 N. Holden Road, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Dovie Carpenter Price. She was a homemaker, farmer and teacher. She was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church where she was active in church affairs for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Bynum Price.
She is survived by a daughter, Norene P. Hunt of Greensboro; a sister, Vada Shurtleff of Forest City; five grandchildren, John B. Hunt, James K. Hunt, Linda Hunt Smith, Allen C. Hunt and Kevin A. Hunt; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 pm. at Sandy Plains Baptist Church with the Revs. Don McSwain, Max Burgin and Oliver Price officiating.
Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.

CLIFFSIDE - Mr. Henry Hubert McAbee, 82, of High Shoal Church Road, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Fairhaven Nursing Center.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Jesse and Virgie Pettit McAbee. He was retired from Cone Mills, Cliffside Plant and was a member of High Shoal Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Hill McAbee.
He is survived by three sons, Charles McAbee of Yorktown, Va., Ronald McAbee of Mooresboro and Dannie McAbee of Forest City; a brother, Troy Wayne McAbee of Gaffney, S.C.; a sister, Josephine Whitaker of Shelby; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

SHELBY - Mrs. Ruth Detweiler Seal, 81, of 614 Peach St., died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Tarentum, Penn., she was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Leola Detweiler. She was a retired co-founder of Seal Wire Co. She and her husband founded the company in 1956.
She was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, where she donated the pipe organ in 1970. She was a former Women's Golf Champion at Cleveland Country Club. She was a WACK, a former pilot and a Sgt. Major, serving in Paris during World War II.
She is survived by her husband, Paul W. Seal; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan S. and John Haskell of Shelby; a sister, Gene Davis of Pittsburgh; and one granddaughter, Robin D. Haskell of Charlotte.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with the Rev. George Rolling and Dr. Luke Harkey officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
