Esmer Deal
HICKORY - Mrs. Esmer Hudson Deal, 73, of Hickory, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
A native of Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Hattie Lail Hudson. She was a homemaker and was a member of Highland United Methodist Church since 1949.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearley H. Davis and Mavis H. Bumgarner; and a brother, Summie R. Hudson.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil M. Deal of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lt. Col. Gene M. and Diane H. Deal of Winston-Salem and Ray L. and Claudia M. Deal of Hickory; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Andrea D. and Robert J. Duggins of Winston-Salem; a stepgrandson, Chris McGee of Newton; a sister, Velma H. Craig of Maiden; and four brothers, Johnny Hudson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Walter Hudson of Hickory, Amos Hudson of Lincolnton and William Hudson of Granite Falls.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Highland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Church officiating.
Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be members of the Highland United Methodist Church choir.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Buddy Dodrill
SHELBY - Mr. James Lee "Buddy" Dodrill, 55, of 1829 E. Marion St., Apt. 1201, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Leroy and Inez Truelove Faulkner. He was owner and operator of Melton Auto Mart and formerly taught at Ruth Elementary School in Rutherfordton. He was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, where he formerly served as a deacon and attended David Baptist Church. He was a 1967 graduate of Methodist College, Fayetteville.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Kay Hoopaugh Dodrill of the home; his stepfather, James Dodrill of Bradenton, Fla.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Christopher and Lisa Kay Dodrill and James Travis Dodrill, all of Shelby; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tracy Lynn Hawkins and Christopher L. Spradley and Candice Marie Hawkins Smith, all of Shelby; a sister, Betty L. McDonald of Raeford; six grandchildren, Christopher Matthew Dodrill, John Tyler Dodrill, Adam Christopher Spradley, Andrew Nikolas Spradley, Emilee Marie Smith and Jacob Wade Smith; a nephew, Mackey McDonald of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a niece, Heidi L. Mahony.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jody W. Griffin officiating.
Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home, 1829 E. Marion St., Apt. 1201.

Dorothy Weathers
DURHAM - Mrs. Dorothy Kay Thompson Andrews Weathers, 74, of Durham, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at her home.
A native of Hillsborough, she graduated from Hillsborough Public Schools. She was a research assistant for more than 25 years for Dr. Alan Kornberg in the Political Science department at Duke University. She was a member of Watts Street Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ray E. Weathers, of the home; her mother, Jessie Cates Thompson; a son and daughter-in-law, Zalph H. Jr. and Vicki Andrews of Newport News, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay Weathers and Curtis Shaw of Winchester, Va.; a brother, W. Carlton Thompson of Hillsborough; two grandchildren and their spouses, Zalph H. III and Maureen Andrews and Julia L. and Rob Shaw-Fuller; and two great grandchildren, Zoe A. Andrews and Nathan Alexander Shaw-Fuller.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Watts Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Mel Williams officiating.
Burial will follow at Chestnut Ridge Methodist Church Cemetery, Hillsborough.
The family received friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home, Durham.

William Arey III
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mr. William Griffin Arey III, formerly of Shelby, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at his home.
Born in 1945 in Walterboro, S.C., he was the son of William G. Jr., of Wintergreen, Va., and the late Louise Craft Arey. He grew up in Colombia, South America, and Panama, Central America, and was a graduate of Balboa Heights High School in Panama City, Panama. He was a 1968 graduate of Oglethorpe University with a B.A. degree in Economics and Marketing. He served in the Army from 1969 to 1974 in Military Intelligence. He was a veteran of the travel industry in California and Washington, D.C., and was communications manager for the Arlington (Va.) Convention and Visitor Service. He served as director of Travel Development for the Greater Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau throughout the 1980s and helped plan the city's Bicentennial Celebration in 1980, and its hostship of the Summer Olympics in 1984. He founded the Tourism Industry Association of Southern California and assumed the position of executive vice president of the California Travel Industry Association in 1990. He returned to the Washington area in 1993 as director of Pacific Basin Tourism Marketing for the Interamerican Management Consultant Corp. of Arlington. He worked with the framework of a USAID Market Access and Regional Competitiveness Program and conducted an assessment of the tourism potential of Fiji, Western Samoa, Tonga and the Cooke Islands and directed a 21-day mission to those island nations. He was sales director for Hargrove Inc./Andrews-Bartlett Inc. He served as treasurer of R.O.C. Corp. in Atlanta and was in charge of new business development for a corporate-oriented travel agency. He was assistant director of Admissions for Oglethorpe University/ Flagler College in Atlanta and St. Augustine, Fla.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William G. Arey Sr. of Shelby.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his brother, John Gordon Craft Arey of Orlando, Fla.; a stepmother, Jean Getman Arey of Wintergreen, Va.; cousins, Robert J. Jr. and Kim Arey Bridges of Shelby; his uncle, Richard E. Arey of Blowing Rock; and his aunt, Mary Alice Arey Dorton of Chapel Hill.
A private burial will be held.
Byrum-Parr Funeral Home of Roseland, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Wallace
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Charles Lee Wallace, 77, of 699 Sellerstown Road, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mary's Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Edmond Lynn officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Kareem Archie
SHELBY - Mr. Kareem Germaine Archie, 25, of 606 Lineberger St., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Faith Harvest Church with Bishop Randy Borders officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends a half-hour prior to the service at the church.
The family will meet at 337 Weather St.
Genesis Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Cleat Surratt
SHELBY - Mr. Cleat A. Surratt, 63, of 118 Foxhill Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Golden Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Martin officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends a half-hour prior to the service at the church.
Genesis Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Lorene Hopper
SHELBY - Mrs. Lorene Dyer Hopper, 73, of 2348 South Post Road, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Haber-sham County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Sr. and Leo Wade Dyer. She was a retired assembly worker at Fasco Industries and a charter member of Morning Star Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking and "yard meetings."
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Roland Hopper; and a brother, Lawrence Dyer Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, William Connie Hopper; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy Scott and Frieda Hopper of Grover and Dale Eugene and Julie Hopper of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kaye H. Nations and Richard Lemmons of Shelby and Judy Arlane H. and Roger Gantt of Jacksonville; nine brothers and eight sisters-in-law, Leroy and Mary Dyer, Lester and Jo Dyer, and Arthur and Beatrice Dyer, all of Shelby; Fred and Jo Dyer of Kings Mountain, Richard and Katherine Dyer, Dean and Linda Dyer, Frank and Nancy Dyer and Johnny Dyer, all of Forest City, and Jim and Carrie Dyer of Gastonia; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Leslie officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

William Brandon
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. William "Willie" George Brandon, 71, of 1040 Tot Dellinger Road, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Rev. Richard Dycus
SHELBY - Rev. Richard Dale Dycus, 49, of 2452 Kings Road Ext., died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Sue Bess Dycus of Shelby and the late Tom Hord Dycus Sr. He was pastor of T.W. Lovelace Memorial Church and owner of D&S Pools, Inc & Two By Two Daycare, Inc. He was a member of T.W. Lovelace Memorial Church in Boiling Springs and was a graduate of Brevard High School and received his Associate Degree from Fruitland Bible College in Hendersonville.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Hazel West Dycus of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Angela Dycus and Russell Doherty of Shelby and Wendy Dycus Hendrick of Shelby; a special friend, Kim Kennedy Venable of Gastonia; a grandson, Ryan Scott Doherty of Shelby; three granddaughters, Brooklyn Michele Doherty, Megan Danielle Hendrick and Madison Taylor Hendrick, all of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Tom Hord Jr. and Donna Dycus of Hendersonville; and a brother, William Daniel Dycus Sr. and Jan of Grover.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at T.W. Lovelace Memorial Church of Boiling Springs with the Rev. Mickey Heyward and Mr. Scott Caldwell officiating. The body will be placed in the church a half-hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.

Robert Beam
CASAR - Mr. Robert L. Beam, 80, of 114 Mace Road, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at his home.
Born Jan. 26, 1920, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late John Frank and Annie Laura Baker Beam. He served in the Army during World War II, earning the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired from PPG Industries. He was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church, was a member and past master of Casar Lodge No. 579, and belonged to Charlotte Scottish Rite.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Hoyle, and a grandson, Robert Guerry Beam.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Hazel Mace Beam of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kirby and Lynda Beam of Savannah, Ga., and Kenneth and Cheryl Beam of Casar; a brother, Kenneth Beam of Lincolnton; two sisters, Marie Page of Drexel and Prue Hovis of Wilmington; two granddaughters, Lindy Wheat and her husband Joey of Savannah, and Laura Shuford and her husband Clint of Lawndale; and three great-grandchildren, William Wheat, Kirby Suzanne Wheat and Serra Shuford.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pisgah Baptist Church, with Dr. Billy Cline and the Rev. Chris Sanford officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.

Helene Lowery
SHELBY - Mrs. Helene Putnam Lowery, 85, of 2213 S. Post Road, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby.
Born in Clover, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Ola Gibson Putnam. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where she was active and taught Sunday school throughout her adult life. She retired from Esther Mill.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wells Lowery; two brothers, Spurgeon Putnam and Clarence Buddy Putnam; and a sister, Donis Walker.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard W. and Kaye Goforth Lowery of Shelby; a daughter, Sonja Short of Shelby; a sister, Ozetta Patterson of Shelby; two grandsons, Matthew Wells Lowery of Asheville and Craig Short of Shelby; five granddaughters, Richelle Sajovec of Raleigh, Laura Kaye Padgett, Jan Lankford, Jill Morehead and Kandace Newton, all of Shelby; four great-grandsons, Patrick Sajovec, Jack Sajovec, Dustin Morehead and Cooper Raywells Short; six great-granddaughters, Sophia Sajovec, Hattie Rose Padgett, Lacey Morehead, Katina Lankford, Jody Lankford, Abbee Newton and Molly Short; and one great-great-grandson, Eligia Lankford.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Todd Bolin and Mickey Heyward officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Richard and Kaye Lowery, 425 Country Club Road, Shelby.

Karen Beason
IRON STATION - Mrs. Karen Hawkins Beason, 50, of 429 Link Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at her home.
A native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of Buck and Bud Black Hawkins of Cliffside. She was a substitute teacher and a former member of Cliffside Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Freddie Beason of the home; two daughters, Sherri Nunnery of Lincolnton and Kim Woodard of Coats; two sisters, Phyllis Houser and Alice McGinnis, both of Cliffside.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Cliffside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harry Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow at Cliffside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Buck and Bud Hawkins, 288 Beason Road, Cliffside.

Don Harrison
BOSTIC - Mr. Don Harrison, 83, of 180 Harrison Road, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at his home.
The funeral is today at 11 at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Roy Byers and Jerry Hames officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service.

Charles Mullinax
LITTLE RIVER, S.C. - Mr. Charles W. Mullinax, 66, of North Pointe, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at his home.
A graveside service will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Grover Cemetery in Grover.
