Maggie Short
ELLENBORO - Mrs. Maggie Morris Short, 89, of 159 Tisdale St., died Monday, August 28, 2000, at the Brian Center, Mooresville.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late William Canady and Ellen Ruppe Morris. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Ellenboro.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Hampton Short; and two sons, Paul Morris Short and Wade Alton Short.
She is survived by a sister, Ellen Mitcham of Shelby; three half brothers, Joe Morris, John Morris and Jimmy Morris, all of South Carolina; and a half sister, Alma Cashwell of Hickory.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Wayne Blackwood officiating.
Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Ellenboro. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Earl Hood Johnson
SHELBY - Mr. Earl Hood Johnson, 73, of 827 Ivywood Drive, died Tuesday, August 29, 2000, at his home.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Romie Ashburn and Vassie Ellen Canipe Johnson. He was a retired furniture expediter for Drexel Furniture of Shelby. He was a member of Mulls Memorial Baptist Church where he was former deacon and usher and Sunday school director.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Allman and Ellen Barnette.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Crotts Johnson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Stephen Scruggs of Cliffside and Renea and Chris Walker of Cherryville; three brothers, Carl Johnson and J.W. Johnson, both of Morganton, and Lebron Johnson of Valdese; a granddaughter, Christina Scruggs; and a grandson, Andrew Scruggs.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Mulls Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Ervin Price, Wade Dellinger and Max Pendleton officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.

Tommy Ross
SHELBY - Mr. Tommy Houston Ross, 52, of 911 Borders Road, died Tuesday, August 29, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Ruby Camp Ross. He was a former employee of Wendell Fabrics of Blacksburg, S.C., and a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Ross.
He is survived by a companion of seven years, Connie Ayers of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Ross and Michael Murray of Shelby; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Connie Ross of Shelby; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Lois Ross and Eddie and Gail Ross, all of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Gene Grigg of Shelby; three grandchildren, Chantel Ross, Justin Ross and Brittney Murray, all of Shelby; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be today at 11 at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Revs. Broadus Heatherly and Tim Trexler officiating. The body will be placed at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family received friends Wednesday at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the home of a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Lois Ross, at 403 Borders Road, Shelby.
"Diamond" Span
SHELBY - Mr. Willie "Diamond" Span, 75, of 310 Gidney St., died Tuesday, August 29, 2000, at his home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at New Ellis Chapel with the Rev. A.A. Ponder officiating.
Burial will follow at Webb Lawns.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

James Smith
SHELBY - Mr. James Glenn Smith, 78, of 614 Whisnant St., died Wednes-day, August 30, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late W.R. and Mary Glenn Smith. He was a retired plant manager of Nehi Bottling Company. He was a member of Westview Baptist Church, Piedmont and Carolina Orchid Society and Cleveland County Rose Society. He served in the Navy during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, George Smith, Paul Smith and Billy Smith; and a half brother, Charles Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Crawford Smith of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn Fred and Rhonda Smith of Fort Mill, S.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzy and Dennis Bridges of Lawndale; a grandson and his wife, Jason and Abigail Smith of Concord; a granddaughter, Melissa Watkins of Castle Rock, Colo.; and two sisters, Ruth Crilley of Shelby and Betty Jolly of Rutherfordton; and Russell Durham, a special friend.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Westview Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Brackett officiating.

Moseline Blanton
SHELBY - Mrs. Carrie Moseline Beam Blanton, 98, of 1003 Fallston Road, died Wednesday, August 30, 2000, at her home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late David Christie and Lizzie Nora Camp Beam. She was a homemaker and was the oldest member of Ross Grove Baptist Church where she was a member of the Mothers Sunday School class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eura Blanton; a son, Cloy Garro Blanton; a daughter, Frances B. Bettis; three brothers, Elzie Lee Beam, Joe Beam and Ernest Beam; and two sisters, Dovie B. Hogue and Gussie Ray B. Jones.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, William "Bill" E. and Jean Blanton of Fallston, Roland C. and Mary Sue Blanton and Larry Scott and Carol Blanton, all of Shelby; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Dorothy B. Vance of the home, Jeanette B. and James Ellis, Edris B. and Arvin Melton and Margaret B. and Barry Greene, all of Shelby; a sister, Velma B. Moore of Shelby; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Ross Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Daggerhart officiating.

Paul Thomas
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Paul Austin Thomas, 83, of 1001 Phifer Road, died Tuesday, August 29, 2000, at Eden Gardens.
A native of Mecklenburg County, he was the son of the late John P. and Estelle Austin Thomas. He was a veteran of the Army serving during World War II. He was manager of Matthew Belk at Dixie Village, Gastonia, with a total of over 50 years with the company. He was a member of Davis Memorial Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's Sunday School class. He was a member of the VFW Absher-Flowers, past director of Gastonia Merchant's Association and a past member of Gastonia Noon Optimist Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Leonard Thomas and two brothers, Preston Thomas and Glen Thomas.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gene F. and Eleanor Ware Thomas of Kings Mountain and Jim Thomas of Bristol, Conn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy T. and Phil Wallace of Fairmont; a brother, Charles Thomas of Huntersville; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Gladys Curry and Ruth and James Knight, all of Gastonia, and Eleanor Thomas of Belmont; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Thomas of Matthews and Mary Thomas of Fayetteville; and three grandchildren, Debbie Thomas of Bristol, Phillip Wallace and Ross Thomas, both of Raleigh.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Davis Memorial Baptist Church in Gastonia with the Rev. Ken Lane officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be co-workers and friends from Matthew Belk Company.

Paul Bell
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Paul Decalv Bell, 71, of 901 Oak Grove Road, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late William A. and Marie Harmon Bell. He was retired shipping and receiving supervisor at FMC Lithium, Bessemer City. He was an active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and past treasurer of Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Nathaniel Bell and Billy David Bell; and a sister, Carolyn Bell.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Shepard of the home; a son, Paul Douglas Bell of Kings Mountain; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry B. and Harold Arledge of Brunswick, Ga.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, William Curtis and Carolyn Bell and Steve and Brenda Bell, all of Kings Mountain and Jimmy K. Bell of Shelby; and two grandsons, Eric and Aaron Arledge, both of Brunswick, Ga.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Caulder officiating.

Pearl Queen
GROVER - Mrs. Pearl Estelle Queen, 91, of 1184 Bethlehem Church Road, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at White Oak Manor, Kings Mountain.
A native of Winder, Ga., she was the daughter of the late James Patrick Snellings. She was retired from Minette Mill and was a member of Allen Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Queen, and a son, Harold Queen.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald L. and Jacqueline Queen of Grover and Alfred J. and Brenda Queen of Dallas; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grover Cemetery with the Rev. Norris Willis officiating.

J.W. Dooley
LEXINGTON, S.C. - Mr. Jacob Willie "J.W." Dooley, 76, of Lexington, S.C., died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000.
A native of Lexington, S.C., he was the son of the late Jacob Willie Sr. and Nancy Shull Dooley. He was a World War II airman who flew in excess of 31 missions over Germany as a flight engineer and top turret gunner on a B-17. After returning from Eruope, he began a career with the Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Co., where he worked for 40 years before retiring. He served on the board of Lexington School District One as a trustee form 1962 to 1970 and was also active in the American Legion Post 7. He was a lifetime member of St. David's Lutheran Church, where he served as councilman, Sunday school teacher and assistant softball coach.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Wooten Dooley of Lexington; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and George Koon of Lexington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Dianne B. Dooley of Shelby, and Phil and Debbie Dooley and Keith and Brenda Dooley, all of Lexington; two sisters, Corrine Shumpert and Trannie L. Baker, both of Lexington; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. David's Lutheran Church.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
