John Thrift
SHELBY - Mr. John Wayne Thrift, 37, of 1728 Lombardy Circle in Charlotte, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, in Shelby.
He was born Jan. 3, 1963, in Cleveland County. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a hair stylist with Norma Russell Salon and Spa in Charlotte. He attended St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Charlotte.
He is survived by his mother, Ellen Hamrick Quinn of Rock Hill, S.C.; his father and stepmother, Bobby Thrift and Libby Greene Thrift of Shelby; a brother, Jimmy D. Thrift of Charlotte; a sister, Rose Ellen Thrift of Rock Hill; a stepsister, Marie Ruppe of Forest City; and a special aunt, Bess Goins of Cherryville.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 5 p. m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Herman Simpson officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his father and stepmother at 1205 Spring Drive in Shelby. Burial will be private.

GASTONIA - Mr. Aaron Hubert Stroupe, 88, of 7067 Dallas-Cherryville Highway, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at his home.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a. m. at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michael Collins officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Carpenter's Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Oscar Chapman
BOSTIC - Mr. Oscar "Jimmy" Chapman, 54, of 2378 Highway 226 in the Golden Valley Community, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the owner and operator of Chapman and Sons Used Cars.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Queen Chapman, who died in 1999.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, Oscar Sr. and Dessie Hollifield Chapman of Golden Valley; a daughter, Pamela Chapman of Golden Valley; four sisters, Shirley Toney, Helen Murray, Frances Shehan, all of Sunshine, and Ruth Shook of Newton.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p. m. at the First Broad Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Battle and Landon Rice officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Padgett and King Mortuary.

Gene Whitworth
GROVER - Mr. Gene Calvin Whitworth, 66, of 1104 Long Branch Road, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was a retired diesel mechanic for Sterling Equipment Co.
He was a charter member of Allen Memorial Baptist Church, Chairman of the Brotherhood, and a former deacon, Sunday school teacher and church historian.
He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Z. and Julia Wright Whitworth.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Wells Whitworth; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Libby Whitworth of York, S.C., and Donald and Myra Whitworth of Grover; a daughter, Cathy Whitworth of Grover; a brother, J. L. "Leroy" Whitworth of Grover; two sisters, Linda Russ of Charlotte and Dian Dickey of Kings Mountain; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and special friends, Larry Webster and family and Chris Webster.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 4 p. m. at Allen Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Tim Lowry and Norris Willis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Leonard Yelton
SHELBY - Mr. Leonard Allen Yelton, 86, of 1056 College Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
A native of Gaffney, S.C., he was the son of the late Leonard and Nancy Jane Blanton Yelton. He was retired owner and operator of Whispering Pines Nursing Home. He was also a retired machinist at J.P. Stevens Cleveland Cloth Mill. He was a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as past deacon, Sunday school teacher and Training Union leader of the Bethel Youth. He was a member of Trappers Association America and North Carolina. He served in the Navy during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche Ledbetter Yelton of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Grace Emily Yelton and John Gold and Joy Yelton and Don Bell, all of Shelby; three grandsons and their wives, the Rev. Timothy and Chris Gold of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mark and Joan Bell and Jason Bell, all of Shelby; two granddaughters, Tonia McCurry and her husband, Mark, of Shelby and Alecia Bell of Wilmington; three great-granddaughters, Emily McCurry and Samantha McCurry, both of Shelby, and Kayla Gold of Chattanooga; and two-grandsons, Noah Gold of Chattanooga and Jaron Bell of Shelby.
The funeral will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Pat Correll, Dr. Ernest Arnold and the Rev. Tim Gold officiating.
The body will be placed in the church one and one-half hours before the service.
Burial will follow at Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery.

DENVER CITY, Texas - Mrs. Estell Lemons Ivie, 76, of Denver City, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000 in Lubbock, Texas.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Yates D. and Mae Green Lemons.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Ivie; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Mabel Lemons; and a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Paul Black.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Boyd and Betty Ivie and Yates and Jerri Ivie, all of Denver City, Texas; four grandsons, Mike Ivie, Mark Ivie, Marty Ivie and Kenny Ivie, all of Denver City; and a granddaughter, Tonya Ivie of Denver City.
The funeral will be today at 10 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, Denver City.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

SHELBY - Mrs. Clara Chapman Williams, 74, of 419 Crystal Lane, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Short Chapman. She was retired from the spinning department at Lily Mill Co. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Grace Sunday School Class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Williams.
She is survived by her stepmother, Vernie Chapman of Columbia, S.C.; a stepbrother, Jimmie Chapman of Blacksburg, S.C.; two nieces, Carolyn Widener and Sandra Summers, both of Blacksburg; and special friends, Hazel Carr and George of Blacksburg.
The funeral will be today at 2 at Clay-Barnette Chapel with the Rev. Terry Jordan officiating.
Burial will follow at Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery.

Clarence Queen
SHELBY - Mr. Clarence Glenn Queen, 86, of 205 Hardwick Drive, died Wednes - day, June 13, 2001, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late John Harrison and Doris Jenkins Queen. He was owner and operator of Queen's Refrigerator Service for 40 years and retired from Ora Mill Co. after 40 years. He was a member of Dover Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons and taught the Men's Sunday School class for 40 years. He was a Mason and member of Cleveland Lodge No. 202 and Shelby Amateur Radio Club. He was a member of the National Guard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Sanders Queen; a brother, J.Y. Queen; and a grandson, Scott Michael Queen.
He is survived by his son, Mike Queen of Lilburn, Ga.; a daughter and son - in - law, Sybil and Tom Hogan of Raleigh; a sister, Corrine Hobbs of Columbus, Ga.; five grandchildren, Kelly Hogan Clinch, Neal Hogan, Ashley Hogan Brady, Blair Hogan and Todd Queen; four great - grandchildren, Emma Clinch, Patrick Clinch, Zachary Hogan and Abigail Hogan. He also had an extended family of half - brothers and sisters of Shelby.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Dover Baptist Church with the Rev. Phil Bailey officiating.

Vera Johnson
THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Vera Brown Shaw Johnson, 94, of Liberty Woods Center, died Thursday, June 14, 2001.
Born Oct. 2, 1906, in Randolph County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Tennie Shaw. She retired from Maurice Hosiery Mill in 1963 after 23 years of service. She was a member of Pilot View Baptist Church, where she was a former teacher with the Beginners Sunday School Class. On Feb. 8, 1925, she married Jasper N. Johnson, who preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 1966.
Survivors include two daughters and a son - in - law, Iris Shaw and Helen and P.D. Embler, all of Thomasville; a son and daughter - in - law, Doyt and Ann Johnson of Shelby; a brother, Tom Shaw of Asheboro; 16 grandchildren and 23 great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Pilot View Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Bishop and Robert Taylor officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Family Funeral Care in Thomasville, and at other times at the home of her daughter, Iris Shaw, 101 E. Holly Hill Road.

She was a native of Cleveland County and the daughter of the late Colin and Margaret Lee Bridges. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain and was retired from the textile industry.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Cone "Red" McKee.
Survivors include a son and daughter - in - law, Dr. Michael and Gale McKee of Burlington; a sister and brother - in - law, Virginia and J.D. Bridges of Kings Mountain; and two grandchildren, Laura McKee of Atlanta, and Dr. Amanda McKee of Raleigh.
A graveside service will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery with Pastor Ben Bishop officiating.

He was born in Kings Mountain.
Survivors include his parents, Winslow and Betty McClain of Kings Mountain; eight sisters and five brothers - in - law, Clara and Joe Poindexter of New Haven, Conn., Maggie and Jamie Mintz of Detroit, Doris and Robert Foster of Bradford, Pamela Magee of Detroit, Sandra and Eric Odems, Sheila and John Dawkins, Sharon McClain, and Berneice McClain all of Kings Mountain; four brothers and a sister - in - law, Herman McClain of Detroit, Johnny McClain of Charlotte, and James and Andrea McClain of Gastonia, and Rodgerick "Frog" McClain of Kings Mountain; a grandmother; aunts; uncles; a special aunt, Helen Gordon; cousins including Christine Tate and Ruth Morris; nieces and nephews.

SHELBY - Mrs. Bettie Odoms Russell, 69, of Logan Street, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born Oct. 14, 1931, the daughter of Eli and Latha Jackson Odoms.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James "j - Neil" Russell; three sisters, Emma Lizzie Hunt, Ruth Catherine Ramseur and Caroline Odoms; and one daughter, Velma Lee Bailey.
She is survived by six daughters and four sons - in - law, Betty and Julius Brooks, Linda and Dwight Toms, Jean and Ronald Bell, all of Shelby, Helen and James Kee of Lawndale, Mary Mason and Lizzie Mae Russell of Shelby; three sons, Willie James Russell and Wilbur Lee Russell of Shelby, and Richard Marvin Russell of Lawndale; four sisters, Mary Ann Odoms, Leila Mae Clark and Sallie Burnetta and Eddie Hill, all of Lawndale, and Margaret Shuford Ford of Shelby; three brothers, Roland Odoms of Lawndale, Johnny Franklin Odoms of Shelby and Plass and Judy Odoms of Hickory; a special granddaughter, Chastity Russell of Shelby; 24 grandchildren; 33 great - grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

BOILING SPRINGS - Mrs. Elva Mae Spake Abrams, 79, of 319 N. Main St., died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
She was the daughter of the late Robert Kellie and Essie Louise Cook Spake and a native of Cleveland County. She graduated with an associate's degree from Gardner - Webb College and earned a bachelor's degree from Appalachian State University. She worked as a librarian at Green Bethel and Boiling Springs Elementary School in the Cleveland County Schools System. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church and the Kerygma Sunday school class. She was a member of the Homemakers Club of Boiling Springs and was a gardener and sewed.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Spake; and a sister, Evelyn Spake Deviney.
She is survived by her husband, Robert White Abrams of the home; one son and a daughter - in - law, Robert Lee and Dorothy Abrams of Rutherfordton; three daughters and two sons - in - law, Elva Jean and John Haynes of Silver Hill, Ala., Donna Kay Huskey of Yokohama, Japan, and Mary Louise and Kenneth Lewis of Cordele, Ga.; two brothers and sisters - in - law, Alvin and Jane Spake of Waxhaw, and Allen and Ethelene Spake of Ellenboro; two sisters and a brother - in - law, Iva Spake and Bill McClure of East Aurora, N.Y., and Sue Spake Lackey of Rutherford College; five grandchildren, Michael Richard Whitaker, Chelsey Louise Abrams, Lindy Lee Abrams, Robert Holden Abrams, Marshall Gilliam Abrams; and friends Patty Bridges and Ann Grigg.

SHELBY - Mr. Herman Daniel "Pop" Allen, 81, of 2220 S. Lafayette St., died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Charles Lester and Jessie Dover Allen. He served in the Army during World War II. He retired as a production operator at Hoechst Celanese. He belonged to Zoar Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Charles Allen, A.V. Allen, Harvey Allen, Carl Ray Allen, Donald Jay Allen and Deaver Allen.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Vernie Jones Allen of the home; a daughter and son - in - law, Kaye and Jim Upton; and a son and daughter - in - law, Roland and Ellen Allen, all of Shelby; a brother, Gene Allen of Shelby; five sisters, Irene Hunt of Ellenboro, Ruby Hamrick of Boiling Springs, and Mae Wesson, Pauline Philbeck and Mary Faye Bridges, all of Shelby; four grandchildren, Angela McKee and her husband, Steve, of Grover, Kelly Upton of Charlotte, Emily Allen of Ventura, Calif., and Bryan Allen of Raleigh; three great - grandchildren, Mariah Kay McKee, Marcus Logan McKee and Austin Kelly McKee.
