LAWNDALE - Mrs. Pearl Carpenter Sain, 88, of 104 Rock Lane, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Lutheran Nursing Home, Hickory.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late George Arthur and Lily Dellinger Carpenter. She was a homemaker and a member of Carpenter's Grove Baptist Church where she taught adult Sunday school for more than 20 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. William Howard Sain; a son-in-law, Ted R. Bridges; and two sisters, Mary Lee Carpenter and Callie C. Walker.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, George Warren and Evelyn Sain of Hildebran and Kenneth and Faye Sain of Lawndale; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Betty S. and Donald Leigh of Gastonia, Dorothy S. and Avery Sain of Hickory and Becky S. Bridges of Lawndale; one sister, Sally C. Sain of Hickory; nine grandchildren, Wayne Leigh, Donna L. Cline, George W. Sain Jr., Jeffrey Sain, Shellie Sain, Kathy S. Cook, Lynn S. Thornton, Chris Sain and Kimberly B. Flemming; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Carpenter's Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Archie Chapman and Jerry Welch officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Stamey Funeral Home.

SHELBY - Mrs. Grace Sailers Mode, 85, of 106 Mode Court, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Ruther-ford Hospital.
A native of Jackson County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late John Walker and Ida Mae Glover Sailers. She was a homemaker and a member of Zoar Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Hoyt Mode; and a son, Boyce Ray Mode.
She is survived by two sons and their families, Jack Mode and family of Shelby and Bobby Mode and family of Forest City; two daughters and their families, Hazel M. Evans and family of Bostic and Donnis M. White and family of Shelby; two sisters, Nezzie Hamrick of North Augusta, S.C., and Rachel Hamrick of Shelby; 20 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Zoar Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin Gobble and the Rev. Dan Jolley officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.

SHELBY - Mr. Martin Shuford Ware Jr., 79, of 934 Warren St. died Tuesday Oct. 17, 2000 at his residence.
A native of Chester, Pa., he was the son of the late Martin S. and Gertie Christie Ware. He was a private investigator and a former Kings Mountain chief of police. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Richard C. Ware of Canton; three daughters, Toni Goodson of Norcross, Ga., Jeri Martin of Shelby and Marti Weber of Las Vegas; three brothers, N.K. Ware of Shelby, Jack Ware of Charlotte and Oren Lee Ware of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; two sisters, Elaine Owenby of Black Mountain and Betty Hutchins of Ruth; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 pm at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside, with the Rev. Dan Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Cliffside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home.

FORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. - Ms. Lina Mae Durham Powell, 82, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Northshore Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.
A native of Athens, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Naomi Lee Durham. She was a member of Mount Olive Methodist Church in Fort Washington.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Willie Powell; and a daughter, Virginia Lee Powell.
She is survived by one daughter, Beulah Powell of Fort Washington; and one grandson, Samuel Lee Powell of Shelby.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p. m. at Enloe Mortuary with Dr. Edward D. Brantley officiating.
Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends at 613 E. Grover St. in Shelby.
Freddie Jefferies
SHELBY - Mr. Freddie Jefferies, 63, of 240 W. Grover St,, Apartment No. 5 died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late James and Alberta Reid Jefferies.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Ann Jefferies.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie McKissick Jefferies of Shelby; five daughters and one son-in-law, Mattie and Tyrone Surratt, Norma Jefferies, Freddie Mae Jefferies, Sheila Denise Jefferies and Laura Mae Allen, all of Shelby; one brother, Thomas James Jefferies of Shelby; two sisters, Mildred Jefferies of Shelby and Hazel Newton of Hartford, Conn.; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Jerusalem C.F. Church of God with the Rev. Thomas McCluney officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

CHARLOTTE - Master Sgt. James Edward Harmon, 57, of Raindance Circle, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at his home.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of Gazzie Jolley Harmon of Mooresboro and the late James Wayne Harmon. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service and was a member of Prospect Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Brenda Harmon Talavera of Austin, Texas, and Vicki Harmon-Perches of Charlotte; a sister and brother-in-law, Patty and Arthur Hutchens of Charlotte; and one grandchild, Analysa Talavera.

A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Englebert and Emma Hull Ostrom. She was a member of Boyce Memorial A.R.P. Church and was a retired nurse.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Dean McDaniel. and her daughter Carletty McDaniel.
She is survived by a son, Mike McDaniel of Kings Mountain; a sister, Vera Ware of Kings Mountain; a granddaughter, Linda Grant of Kings Mountain; and five great-grandchildren, Richard Latta, Trevor Latta, Daniel Latta, Steven Grant and Brianna Grant, all of Kings Mountain.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Stewart Crawford; a brother, Earl J. Lowe; and two sisters, Eva Lowe Taylor and Elizabeth Lowe McConnell.
