LAWNDALE - Mrs. Ellen Virginia Willis Towery, 57, of 1352 Fletcher Road, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
Born in Cleveland County, Sept. 29, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Wilburn Frank and Maude Oaks Willis. She was retired from Four Leaf Textiles in Clover, S.C.
She is survived by her husband, Robert William Towery; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Tonya Towery of Casar; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Doug Blackburn of Boston and Melanie and Butch Downs of Casar; a brother, John Willis of Ellenboro; four sisters, Evie Vaughn and Judy Hubbard, both of Lawndale, Brenda Hull of Lattimore and Deanna Campbell of Shelby; and five grandchildren, Reba Downs, Dustin Downs, Christopher Towery, Amanda Downs and Allison Blackburn.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Garnett Smith
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Garnett Earl Smith, 80, of 716 Sipes St., died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. in Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter's Funeral Home, Cherryville, with the Rev. Barry Philbeck officiating.
Burial will follow at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Gastonia.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Albert Anderson
GROVER - Mr. Albert E. Anderson, 64, of 505 N. Main St., died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late John Ervin and Rosa Lee Short Anderson. He was retired from textiles and was an Army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Pat Eugene Anderson; and a brother, John Charles Anderson.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Lou Harmon Anderson of Grover; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charlie Anderson of Kings Mountain and Robert and Pamela W. Anderson of Grover; three brothers, Claude Anderson of Grover and Ronnie Anderson and Kenneth Anderson, both of Kings Mountain; a sister, Judy Morrison; and three grandchildren, Shannon Marie Anderson, Jessica Doran Anderson and Ethan Cole Anderson.
A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis Harmon officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain.

SPINDALE - Mrs. Daliah Elizabeth Freeman Poteat, 83, of 609 Alaska St., died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Spencer Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Vaughn and Bruce Caldwell officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Monday from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Family Life Center of Spencer Baptist Church.

Ora Haynes
RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Ora Dalton Haynes, 76, of 2190 U.S. 64-74 A, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Southern Baptist Church with the Revs. John Perry and Claude McIntosh officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday night from 7 to 8:30 at Crowe's Mortuary.

Henry Spence
RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. Henry Clay Spence, 50, of 179 Riceville Road, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Kinston, he was the son Rodney L. and Ann Taylor Spence. He was employed by Kemet of Shelby. He was an Air Force veteran, serving in Vietnam and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Kinston.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Sara Barnes Spence of the home; a son, Josh Spence of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Leah S. and Mark Butler of Forest City; a brother, Keith Spence of Las Vegas; and two sisters, Annette Ipock of Kinston and Jeanette Kennedy of Deep Run.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Cliffside Baptist Church with the Revs. Ron Boone and Charlie Blackwell officiating.
Burial will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

CLIFFSIDE - Mr. Willie Lee "Winkie" Pearson, 84, of 203 Academy St., died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Autumn Care, Forest City.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Charley and Zudie Hawkins Pearson. He was retired from Cone Mills, Cliffside Plant. He was a former president, coach and umpire of Tri Community Little League and was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Hawkins Pearson.
He is survived by a son, Ronald Pearson of Cliffside; three daughters, Earnesteen "Tenny" Barnes of Mooresboro, Frances Wallace of Las Vegas and Linda Conner of Cliffside; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

FORT MILL, S.C. - Mr. Johnnie Ezell Earl, 66, of 203 Brookside Drive, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of Mozell Hudson Earl and the late Ivey Clayton Earl. He was retired from Duke Power, where he was a concrete supervisor. He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Pansy Cook Earl; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Karen Earl of Polkville and Timothy Earl of Fort Mill; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Connie and Tim Laws of Blacksburg, S.C., Cindy Morrow of Rock Hill, S.C., and Donna and Steve Dorman of Fort Mill; three brothers, James C. Earl and Bobby Ray Earl , both of Lawndale, and Jimmy Wayne Earl of Polkville; two sisters, Sue Turner and Linda Jane Cook, both of Lawndale; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church with the Revs. Ernie Speagle and R.A. Brackett officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.

R.L. Hunt
SHELBY - Mr. R.L. "Tater" Hunt, 64, of 1113 Buffalo St., Apartment 4-B, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Ellenboro, he was the son of John Lester Hunt of Toluca and the late Mary Frances Bennett Hunt. He was a member of the Salvation Army and a retired carpenter and farmer.
In addition to his father, he is survived by four sons, Johnny Hunt and Larry Todd Hunt, both of Kings Mountain, Tim Hunt of Ellenboro and Richard Hunt of Shelby; two daughters, Christine Elizabeth Hunt of Charlotte and Mary Louise Hunt of Shelby; three brothers, Bob Hunt, Bill Hunt and Charles Hunt, all of Shelby; four sisters, Louis Elmore of Gastonia, Annie Ruth Browner, Janie Mae Price and Barbara "BeBe" Hosch, all of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; and a special friend, Thelma Fuller of Shelby.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army with Capt. Jackie Kelley officiating.
Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Enloe Mortuary. The body may be viewed Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home.

Kathleen Dalton
SHELBY - Mrs. Rebecca Kathleen Guffey Dalton, 68, of 1585 South Oak Drive, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at her residence.
Born in Cleveland County, April 16, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Archie Raymond and Lottie Mae Hudson Guffey. She was retired from PPG Industries, where she was a lab technician. She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Adrian Dalton; a brother; a sister; and a grandchild.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Vickie Dalton of Kings Mountain and Lt. Cmdr. Ken and Robin Dalton of Newport News, Va.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Ed Pearson of Shelby, Kathy and Marc Wright of Taylors, S.C., and Shelia and Brian Griffin of Fallston; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Judy Guffey of Hollis; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Bingham officiating.
Burial will follow at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

SHELBY - Ms. Estella L. Roberson, 78, of 441 Monroe St., died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Thomas McLean
STANLEY - Mr. Thomas Henry "Hen Tom" McLean, 81, of 7022 Old Plank Road, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at his home.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Gold Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Franklin Lowery officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Gold Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Ruby Barus
VALDESE - Mrs. Ruby Ellen Phillips Barus, 85, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at College Pines Nursing Center.
Born Jan. 13, 1915, in Ashe County, she was the daughter of the late Marion Shober Phillips and Flora Watson Phillips. She was a homemaker and retired nurse's aide at Valdese General Hospital and also worked at the Frances Louise and Pineburr Hosiery Mills. She was a member of Abee's Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Barus; her stepmother, Kiter Nichols Phillips; one brother, Smith Phillips; and a sister, Ora Lea Phillips Livingston.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis H. and Ramona Barus of Valdese; a daughter and son-in-law, Dores B. and Thomas Queen of Shelby; four brothers, Morton Phillips of Burlington, Archie Phillips of Valdese, Arvill Phillips of Naples, Fla., and Slater Phillips of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Fern Davis of Lenoir; four grandchildren, Timothy Barus, Matthew Barus, Barry Queen and Ellen Queen; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Abee's Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Brunette officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
