Ruby Barus
VALDESE - Mrs. Ruby Ellen Phillips Barus, 85, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at College Pines Nursing Center.
Born Jan. 13, 1915, in Ashe County, she was a daughter of the late Marion Shober Phillips and Flora Watson Phillips. She was a homemaker, retired nurses aide at Valdese General Hospital, and worked at the Frances Louise and Pineburr Hosiery Mills. She was a member of Abee's Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Barus; her stepmother, Kiter Nichols Phillips; one brother, Smith Phillips; and a sister, Ora Lea Phillips Livingston.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis H. and Ramona Barus of Valdese; a daughter and son-in-law, Dolores B. and Thomas Queen of Shelby; four brothers, Morton Phillips of Burlington, Archie Phillips of Valdese, Arvill Phillips of Naples, Fla., and Slater Phillips of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Fern Davis of Lenoir; four grandchildren, Timothy Barus, Matthew Barus, Barry Queen and Ellen Queen; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Abee's Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Greg Burnette officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.

STANLEY - Mr. Thomas Henry "Hen Tom" McLean, 81, of 7022 Old Plank Road, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at his home.
The funeral is today at 3 p.m. at Gold Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Franklin Lowery officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Margie Farnsworth Hager, 75, of 3502 Tryon Courthouse Road, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Shady Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Philip Deitz officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Lee Roy Tarlton
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Lee Roy Tarlton, 89, of White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain, formerly of 406 Elizabeth Ave., Shelby, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at his home.
Born in Anson County, he was the son of the late Alan Alonzo and Martha Elizabeth Watson Tarlton. He had worked for Southern Pump and Tank Co. as a computer service technician. He was a member and former deacon at Davidson Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Ellis Tarlton; and a son, William Leroy Tarlton.
He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Richard Williamson of Fort Mill, S.C., Barbara and Bill Crocker of Shelby and Joan and Flay Gettys of Charlotte; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Davidson Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bobby Ridge officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Bill and Barbara Crocker, 414 Allen St., Shelby.

Martha Wyke
SHELBY - Mrs. Martha F. Wyke, 83, of 615 Tina Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born in Winston-Salem, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Pinckney and Nannie Martin Fulton. She retired as cashier for Rogers Pontiac-Cadillac-Buick and belonged to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Golden Circle Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Christian Women's Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Wyke.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas F. and Barbara Wyke of Charlotte, and David R. and Julie Wyke of McKinney, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Ann and Jack Biggio of Raleigh; two brothers, Wilbur D. Fulton of West End and Jonathan W. Fulton of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with Dr. Dolores B. Queen officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. David Lee "D.L." Smith, 82, of 357 Cross Road, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at White Oak Manor, Kings Mountain.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Lemuel "L.G." and Florence Costner Smith. He was a retired self-employed brick mason.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Thurman Smith, Warren Smith and William Taft Smith; and three sisters, Lottie Mae Williams, Thelma Smith and Ruth Crocker.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maude Sellers Smith of Kings Mountain; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn Derriel and Joan Smith of Bessemer City and David Nelson and Sandra Smith of Conover; a daughter and son-in-law, Patsy Smith and Joel Rountree of Grover; a brother, Hal Smith of Apopka, Fla.; a sister, Elva McGinnis of Cherryville; nine grandchildren, Susan Smith of Pensacola, Fla., Alan Smith, Kevin Smith and Brian Smith, all of Bessemer City, Shelley Smith Seales of Indianapolis, Ashley Smith of Raleigh and Katy Rountree, Josh Rountree and Emily Rountree, all of Grover; and two great-grandchildren, Jordan Smith and Jonathan Smith, both of Bessemer City.
A graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mary's Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Don Fisher officiating.

FOREST CITY - Mr. J.B. Evans, 66, of Forest City, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Willow Ridge of North Carolina, Rutherfordton.

Vera Washburn
SHELBY - Mrs. Vera Margaret Yarborough Washburn, 96, of 384 Washburn Switch Road, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at her home.
Born July 12, 1904 in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John Robert and Candus Yarborough. She was self-employed as a hairdresser until 1980 when she retired after 43 years and was a member of Double Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Herman Washburn; a brother, Perzy Yarborough; and three sisters, Lillian Yarborough, Lucy Y. Champion and Bessie Elsie Wright.
She is survived by two dear friends, Ethel Cook and Jerry Scruggs.
A graveside service will be Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. at Double Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. C.A. Kirby Jr. and Eddie Brackett officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 at Palmer Mortuary.

PINEHURST - Mrs. Helen Little Anderson, 74, of 2092 Blake Blvd., died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter's Funeral Home with the Rev. Mickey Champion officiating.
Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery.

Estelle Roberson
SHELBY - Estelle Lawrence Roberson, 76, of 441 Monroe St., died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born May 28, 1924 in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Eli Sr. Annah Pounds Lawrence. After getting married she moved to Manhatten, N.Y. and worked as a beautician and later became employed with the hospital until she retired. In the early 1990s, she moved back to Shelby and became a member of Westside Praise and Worship Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warren G. Roberson; three brothers, Willie Lawrence, Frank Lawrence, and Eli Lawrence Jr.; five sisters, Ola L. Jackson, Irene Lawrence, Mattie L. Jefferies, Bessie L. Lattimore, and Eula L. Bell.
She is survived by three sisters, Norcis L. McCrary of Washington, D.C., Annie L. Benjamin and Carrie L. Dixon, both of Shelby; and relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Westside Praise and Worship Center in Shelby. Burial will follow at United Methodist Church at Brook's Chapel.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
Ernest Hopper
LAWNDALE - Mr. Ernest Bill Hopper, 65, of 2848 Toney Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Preston Allen Sr. and Nannie Fannie Hopper. He was a feed and seed worker at Elmore Feed and Seed.
He is survived by his wife, Florine Hush Hopper; two sons, Minister Melvin Hush and Edward Hopper of Lawndale; six daughters, Eunice Brown, Dora Sanford, Janie Hush, Mary Hunt, Lorine Hopper and Cindy Cowans; eight brothers, Leroy Hopper, Cliff Allen, Wilbur Hopper, Preston Allen Jr., Larry Allen, Jerry Allen, Sam Allen and Robert Allen; six sisters, Ruth Surratt, Ruth Ross, Bessie Mae Marble, Lester Rudsill, Pat McDowell and Christeen Wright; 25 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 2:00 at Lawndale First Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Houze officiating.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family received friends Monday at the church.

Ms. Elizabeth Eskridge of 2501 Westerland Lane, Houston, Texas, formerly of Shelby, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000 at Tremont Health Care in Houston.

Lillian Howard
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Lillian Worsham Howard, 90, of 101 Melba Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Madison County, she was the daughter of the late William Joseph and Jessie Martin Presley Worsham. She worked as an inspector in textiles during the 1930s and did carpentry work and helped with the manufacturing of connecting rods during World War II. She was a bookkeeper for A.M. Boggs and helped manage the family store. She taught tole painting, sold at crafts shows, wrote poetry and was an oil and acrylics artist. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher. She was a charter member of the Hendersonville Crafters and a former member of the Smokey Mountain Tolers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Murrell Edward Howard; a brother, the Rev. Cecil Worsham; and two sisters, Lila Wilkie and Helen Garren.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Linda Howard of Lawndale; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Flay Cooke of Lawndale and Phyllis and Dan McIntyre of Tifton, Ga.; a brother, Boyd Worsham of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Mildred Connor of Fletcher; a special sister-in-law and caregiver, Sally Lou Worsham Faulk of Goose Creek, S.C.; five grandchildren, Crystal Keller of Lawndale, Kelly Cooke of Gastonia, Stacy Cooke of Casar and Katie McIntyre and Dan McIntyre, both of Tifton; and a great-grandchild, Cyndal Keller.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Russell Fitts and Paul Chandler officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
