Cecil Deal
HICKORY - Mr. Cecil Milton Deal, 79, of 15th St. Drive N.E., died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born July 31, 1921, the son of the late Thomas Patrick and Destimona Price Deal. He was a graduate of Clevenger College and a lifetime member of the VFW, Active Institutional. He was a woodworker for Drexel Heritage Furniture and a member of Highland United Methodist Church, where he was a choir member and a Sunday school teacher. He was a representative of Boy Scouts of America. He served in the Army and the Coast Guard, earning the American Defense Service Medal, the Bronze Service Star, the American Theater Campaign Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and Eamet Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esmer Hudson Deal; four brothers, Carl Deal, Alvin Deal, Solon Deal and Arnold Deal; and one sister, Elaine Crowell.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lt. Col. Gene M. and Diane H. Deal of Winston-Salem and Ray L. and Claudia M. Deal of Hickory; a granddaughter and her husband, Andrea D. and Robert J. Duggins of Winston-Salem; a stepgrandson, Chris McGee of Newton; and a half-brother, Robert Deihl of Raleigh.
The funeral will be today at 1 at Highland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Church officiating.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Members of the Highland United Methodist Church Choir will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Mamie Howell
SHELBY - Mrs. Mamie C. Howell, 82, of 401 N. Morgan St., formerly of Grover, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
A native of Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late William Edward and Sally Rhinehardt Correll.
She retired as a supervisor with Minette Mills in Grover after 20 years of service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grover, where she was active in the WMU and the Golden Circle Class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Nelson Howell; two sons, Billy and Dud Howell; and two sisters, Geraldine Hall and Ruby Vernon.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmie Lee and Kay Howell of Grover, and Richard Nelson and Esther Howell of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy H. and Roger Mullinax of Grover; a brother, Frank Correll of Gastonia; two sisters, Virginia England of Kings Mountain and Kay Hall of Gastonia; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 2 at First Baptist Church in Grover with Dr. Tony Fulbright and the Revs. Grady Gregory and Richard Horney officiating. Burial will follow at Grover Cemetery.
The family received friends Monday at Harris Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the home of her daughter, 104 Briarcliff Road, Grover.

Wayne Conner
DALLAS - Mr. Wayne Herman Conner, 51, of Fern Forest Apartments, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Gaston County, he was the son of Althea McDonald Conner Brigman of Dallas and the late Herman Frank Conner. He was a supervisor for Carolina Mills.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Michelle and the Rev. Alan Sailors of Shelby, Lisa and Kevin Terry of Ellenboro, Misty and Mark Dyer of Grover and Joanne Conner of Hickory; a brother and sister-in-law, Richie and Jenny Moss of Bessemer City; a sister, Lee White of Clover, S.C.; a nephew, Jakob Moss of Bessemer City; a special friend, Mary Barnes of Gastonia; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Dallas Funeral Home with the Revs. Alan Sailors and Jack Bryant officiating.
Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
Elsie Guffey
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Elsie Crum Guffey, 80, of 1607 Glenside Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Wesley Long Hospital, Greensboro.
Born May 24, 1920, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Lee and Mary Leona Hodge Crum. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, R.J. Guffey; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Elizabeth Graves.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn Ruth and Jerry Jarrett of Greensboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harvey L. and Becky Guffey of Ellenboro and J. Kenneth Sr. and Dixie Guffey of Gibsonville; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Collis and Dr. John Franklin Howard officiating.
Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

EARL - Mr. Randy Scott Davis, 29, of 2506C Blacksburg Road, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Floyd David Davis of Mooresboro and the late Kay Dixon Davis.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother, Brent Allen.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Beth Thompson Davis of Anderson, S.C.; his grandmother, Gladys Davis of Shelby; four daughters, Selina N. Davis and Haley E. Davis of Anderson, S.C., and Alexis Etheridge and McKenzie Etheridge, both of Shelby; two sons, Randy Scott Davis II of Anderson, S.C., and Jeremy Davis of Shelby; two sisters, Deborah Messick and Barbie Messick, both of Shelby; a half-sister, Tammy Lynn Camp of Shelby; and two half-brothers, George Timothy Camp and Skeeter Camp, both of Shelby.

ELLENBORO - Mrs. Lola Mae Stafford Hall Edwards, 78, of 353 Huskey Road, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Fair Haven Nursing Center.
A native of Rutherford County, she was daughter of the late John E. and Ella Jane Lyda Stafford. She was a homemaker and a member of Forest City Church of God.
She is survived by her husband, Dewey Edwards of the home; a daughter, Della Lefler of Kings Mountain; a stepdaughter, Wanda Simpson of Ellenboro; a granddaughter, Donna Millwood of Kings Mountain; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be today at 3 at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. C.L. Peterson officiating.

ELLENBORO - Mr. Ralph Frederick, 86, of 353 Webb Church Road, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at the Rutherford Hospital in Rutherfordton.
He is survived by a son, Franklin Frederick of Asheville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Marion and Daniel Jolly of Shelby, Ruby Webb of Harrisburg, Pa., Mary Thompson of Forest City and Phyllis Hammond of Providence, R.I.; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at The Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Lawndale with the Pastor Elder James Benton officiating.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Audell Allison
BOILING SPRINGS - Mrs. Audell Mullenax Allison, 75, of 2427 Gaffney Road, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 25, 1924, in Faulkner County, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Julia Brannon Mullenax. She was a 1942 graduate of Liberty High School near Conway, Ark., and was assistant manager of Mayflower Dairy Bar in North Little Rock, Ark., during World War II. She married Staff Sgt. Raymond Rush Allison in 1945 and moved with him to his home in Cleveland County, where they lived together until his death in 1974. She was a receptionist and coordinator of volunteer programs at Royster Memorial Hospital from 1965 to 1977. She was a 55-year member of Camps Creek Baptist Church, where she served at various times as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, WMU President, Sunday school secretary and associate church clerk.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma M. Ebsen of Little Rock; and two brothers, Delma "Boe" Mullenax of Conway and A.J. Mullenax Jr. of San Mateo, Calif.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell Maurice and Renee Byars Allison and Doyne Raye and Jill Miller Allison, all of Boiling Springs; three granddaughters, Bethany A. Condrey and her husband, Eric, and Jennifer Robin Allison, all of Boiling Springs, and Bonnie Rae Allison of Shelby; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Ruth Condrey and McGwire David "Mac" Condrey, both of Boiling Springs; and two brothers, Gene Mullenax and O.H. "Bill" Mullenax, both of Little Rock.
The funeral will be tonight at 8 at Camp's Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Stephen Durham and Glenn Jackson officiating.
A graveside service will be Wednesday at 10 a.m.

UMATILLA, Fla. - Mrs. Annie M. Thrift, 86, of 37101 Trefoil Lane, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, in Mount Dora, Fla.
A native of Shelby, she moved to Umatilla in 1954. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a sister, Sue Brooks, of Stanley; two granddaughters, Carole Ballard of Umatilla and Diane Abernathy of Stanley; one grandson, Bob Thrift of Umatilla; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Harden/Pauli Funeral Home in Eustis, Fla.

Catherine Echeverri
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Mrs. Catherine Dixon Echeverri died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
She was the daughter of Lorene Spurling Dixon and the late Monroe Claude Dixon. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Ivan Echeverri.
She graduated from Burns at Fallston High School in 1962 and UNC-Greensboro in 1966. She taught at Riverside High School in Greenville and North Iredell High School in Statesville. She was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Simpsonville, S.C.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Jaime Echeverri; a daughter, Tori; a son, Patrick; a brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Vickie Dixon; a sister and brother-in-law, Barney and Nancy Peeler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shelby, with Father Eric Houseknecht officiating.
Burial will follow in Kadesh Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of Faye Dalton Hollifield of Shelby and the late Wilbur Watkins Hollifield.
She was a retired industrial engineer for Cleveland Mills Co. and a member of Grace Fellowship Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Jerry Dean Ruppe Sr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Karen Ruppe and David and Donna Ruppe, all of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Marsha Hollifield, Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Steve Rabb, Shelby; four grandchildren, Ryan Parker, Jennifer Ruppe, David Ruppe Jr. and Morgan Ruppe.
